Bob SagetAn Orange County coroner's report obtained by PEOPLE Thursday said Saget likely fell backward and hit the back of the head. At the time of his death, he had fractures on the back of his head and around his eyes. According to the report, the beloved Full House actor had posterior scalp abrasions, subgaleal hemorrhage (this is blood that forms between the skull and scalp), discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids from a skull fracture, subdural hematoma (this is a collection of blood on the brain surface) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (which bleeds into the space surrounding the brain). Although Saget had no illegal drugs or toxins in his system, the report indicated that he was taking the prescription drug clonazepam, which treats seizures, panic disorder, and anxiety. In addition, Saget's autopsy revealed that he had cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), coronary artery atherosclerosis (damage or disease in the large blood vessels of the heart), and aortic atherosclerosis (deposition of plaque in the wall of the aorta). dr Roshini Raj, associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, told PEOPLE, "This report shows that [the skull and] brain suffered trauma that resulted in skull fractures, brain bruising and actual bleeding in the area around the brain led around . This blood can compress the brain and cause death. The coroner determined that this trauma was most likely caused by an accidental fall backwards." Regarding the fracture around Saget's eyes, Raj said, "The head hits something hard and the skull fractures in various places, including the eye sockets (the part of the skull around eyes) and this causes bleeding that compresses the brain. "Authorities determined that Bob died from head trauma,” the Saget family said Wednesday. “They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head, didn't think anything of it, and fell asleep." Saget's family added that they have been "overwhelmed by the incredible love from Bob's fans" in the weeks since his death, and that the support "has been a great comfort to us and to them we are eternally grateful." "Now that we have the final conclusions from the authorities' investigation, we felt it was right for fans to learn those conclusions directly from us," they continued.
