Losing ground to Manchester City in the title race, Chelsea are questioning the future of a number of their defenders and could be among the clubs to dive into the market during the January transfer window. Any step towards Jules Kounde's long-term goal will likely wait until summer, but Chelsea could do some business if the right opportunity presents itself. The Blues have been linked to a move from Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, while Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has reportedly been offered to them, with Antonio Rudiger slated to leave Stamford Bridge when his contract expires next summer. With Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta all expiring at the end of the season, Chelsea are linked with De Ligt as they are targeting a high profile defender. De Ligt has gone through tough times at Juventus for £ 67.8million since joining Ajax in 2019 and his agent Mino Raiola has said he is ready to leave Serie A giants. "He is ready for a new step," Raiola told the Dutch newspaper NRC. That could be good news for Chelsea, but De Ligt still has two and a half years left on his Juventus deal, which means it wouldn't go cheap. Saul Niguez has been one of the worst signings of the season to date and with N'Golo Kane struggling with injuries, Chelsea are reportedly up for Neves. The report claims Manchester United are also interested in a player who would stay on his Wolves contract for another two and a half years and be available for around £ 38million. Chelsea are still following Kounde, with ESPN claiming the possibility of a January move that is not off the table. A move from Kounde is more likely in the summer, but the report says Sevilla are ready to cut their € 80m valuation and the 23-year-old is interested in a move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea failed to move from Kounde in the summer as Sevilla refused to cut their $ 68 million price tag. The report says Sven Botman from Lille and Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg are also targets as Tuchel tries to bolster his defense. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-German, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all fighting to sign Rüdiger next summer. According to the Guardian, Real Madrid have emerged as the favorite for signing Rüdiger after positive talks with him about a move at the end of the season. Talks between Rüdiger and Chelsea about a new contract have stalled and the 28-year-old can negotiate a preliminary contract with foreign clubs from January 1st. Tuchel wants to lose the German international, but talks with Real Madrid are said to have done so at a pleasing pace.
