The Reds were the stronger team for the first 15 minutes or so, but the Blues managed to work their way into play for the rest of the first half. Early in the second half Chelsea had chances to break the deadlock but after full-time it ended goalless and extra time was required. Konstantinos Tsimikas then scored the decisive goal on penalties to win the cup for Liverpool. Romelu Lukaku has earned a cup final start for Chelsea thanks to his three goals in his last two games, with Kai Havertz absent through injury. However, it was Liverpool who had the first chance of the game, with Thiago failing to finish a Luiz Dias cross. Edouard Mendy then thwarted him in a one-on-one with a strong save, while Naby Keita then shot wide. Christian Pulisic shot wide for Chelsea after about 16 minutes, but Lukaku was soon penalized for a handball under construction. Thiago then fouled Mateo Kovacic on the edge of the box and the Blues were awarded a free kick which Alisson saved shortly afterwards. Mason Mount's pass soon found Pulisic, but the USA international fired his shot just wide. After a strong opening minutes from Liverpool, Chelsea came on and it was Marcos Alonso who tested the Reds' goal next, but Alisson was there to save. Pulisic had another chance to score for Chelsea when he found Mount's pass but he couldn't find the back of the net as he saw his shot blocked. Mount and Lukaku broke for the Blues after a period of pressure from their opponents, but the attack soon collapsed. Just before half-time, Jota had a chance to score for Liverpool but his attempt went over the bar. Alonso almost scored in the opening minute when he shot over from a Pulisic cross, with the latter having a chance of his own seconds later. Diaz soon fouled Reece James down the right flank and Alonso saw his free kick hit the bar. Liverpool then came close with a chance of their own when Andy Robertson headed wide from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross. Diaz then shot just wide of the post shortly afterwards. Jota had another chance for Liverpool when he went wide of the post. After Chelsea enjoyed plenty of possession early in the second half, Liverpool soon found themselves in a blast of their own. N'Golo Kante was the first substitute of the game for the Blues when he came on for Kovacic. Pulisic then saw a shot from a retreat from James go wide on target. Diaz then hit a shot from distance for Liverpool but his shot curled up and wide from the top corner. Kante was able to find the ball in attack but couldn't find Mount on his right who had plenty of space before Mendy cleared a Liverpool chance at the other end. Pulisic then won a corner for Chelsea but nothing came of it. James did really well, twice refusing Liverpool to continue his attack before being booked for a foul on Thiago. Lukaku broke down the left flank for Chelsea and was about to send in a low ball but Virgil van Dijk was there to clear it. Soon Liverpool hit the post in quick succession, with both Diaz and Jota hitting the woodwork. Lukaku was replaced by Hakim Ziyech in the last ten minutes for Chelsea. Diaz was close again for the Reds as the game went into injury time and his shot went just wide of the target. The game soon ended goalless, with extra time required to settle the score. Early in extra time Kante was on hand to retrace and stop a Liverpool counterattack. Pulisic broke on the right for Chelsea but couldn't get a cross into the box. Kante worked so hard again to deny Liverpool at the break, this time against Diaz on the right. Mount then found himself at the end of a James cross from the right, but he fired his attempt over the bar from outside the area. Ziyech sent a cross towards Pulisic into the box but Alexander-Arnold was there to clear and send it to the corner. Thiago Silva headed behind from an Alonso corner while Chelsea saw the stronger side at half-time. It was half time in overtime, with both teams still needing to score. Loftus-Cheek was able to run down the right and send an inviting ball into the penalty area, but the chance soon fizzled out. Alonso scored the first goal for Chelsea while James Milner scored for Liverpool. Azpilicueta then missed his for the Blues when his try hit the post, with Thiago and James then scoring. Alexander-Arnold scored Liverpool's fourth before Jorginho struck shortly after. Mane had a chance to win it for the Reds but Mendy was there to save and keep his side. Ziyech was next and he scored past Alisson, with Jota converting his to hold him in the sudden death. The Liverpool goalkeeper then made a save from Mount before Tsimikas scored to give Liverpool the FA Cup.
