CountdownCAROL Vorderman has given a big hint that she'll be making a much-anticipated comeback on Countdown. The TV star, 61, worked on the game show from 1982 to 2008 and is set to return after presenter Anne Robinson quit. Adding fuel to the fire, Carol teased a selfie on Instagram as she traveled "to work" at a "secret location". She told her 226,000 followers, "Heading to work...can't wait to tell you what it is...next week...fans are going wild for Carol's post, and many suspect a The Countdown comeback is about to happen." : One wrote: "I'm guessing you're going back to countdown!" Another added: "Oooh headed back to countdown studio? Have fun wherever you go." And a third told Carol: "Glad to see you host Countdown." Carol co-hosted Countdown from 1982 to 2008, initially starring alongside Richard Whiteley in the C4 Show. After Richard's sad death in 2005, Carol continued to work with Des Lynam, followed by Des O'Connor. Carol resigned in 2008 and Rachel Riley was hired to replace her. Countdown was then hosted by Jeff Stelling, Nick Hewer and most recently Anne Robinson. Anne was the show's first female lead host after taking the job in June 2021. Now it's time for an older woman to take the reins. Carol has since been traded as Anne's successor. A TV insider previously told The Sun: "Carol is such a big part of Countdown and Channel 4 knows how much everyone loves her. "The bosses would love her to come back as the main presenter, her Countdown journey would wrap up. Illumina pays attention to its Ps and Qs for IVDR compliance

Illumina appears to be making a concerted effort to meet IVDR requirements, despite a dispute with the European Commission over the past year. (Author: Gardener)

IlluminaIllumina appears to be crossing all of its Ts and hitting all of its i's when it comes to complying with the new IVDR regulations in Europe. The company recently issued a press release announcing that it had received CE Marking under the new IVDR for Illumina DNA Prep with Enrichment Dx. Still, the company didn't seem too keen on pleasing the European Commission last year when Illumina acquired Grail amid an ongoing investigation into the merger. "Illumina is expanding its range of CE-marked IVD instruments and applications to help our customers comply with new regulations and underpin our commitment to meeting the highest industry standards in improving the quality, safety and reliability of IVDs," said Paula Dowdy, Illumina senior vice president and general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Illumina DNA Prep with Enrichment Dx provides clinical labs with content flexibility and is quick and easy to implement." According to the company, Illumina DNA Prep with Enrichment Dx marks the addition of a critical component in the transition of NGS workflows from in-house assays running only with Components for research use (RUO) were created, to in-house assays using IVDR-compliant components, with minimal workflow and service disruption. Illumina DNA Prep Dx with Enrichment Dx is compatible with existing CE-marked Illumina platforms and ensures scalability from low to high throughput, the company said. It will also be compatible with Illumina's future high-throughput IVD sequencing platform, which is planned to be launched later this year. CE marking is mandatory for Class A (low personal risk, low risk to public health) IVD devices and IVDR certification by a Notifying Body is required for existing Class C (high personal risk, high medium to low public risk) required . Illumina noted that it was one of the first companies to apply for IVDR certification, submitting timely technical submissions for two Class C products. The company also said its high-throughput diagnostic sequencing platform, which combines Illumina's world-class sequencer and genomic analysis server, is also on track for IVDR readiness. After surviving many regulatory scrutiny, Illumina reported in August 2021 that it had acquired Grail and acquired Grail but would keep Grail as a separate company pending the European Commission's ongoing regulatory review. The European Commission was not happy with either company, considering the move to be in breach of standstill under the EU Merger Regulation. "Illumina and Grail have completed their merger while our investigation is ongoing," said Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, in September 2021. "Under our rules, companies must await Commission approval before conducting transactions subject to our review." . This is the first time companies have openly gone through with their deal while we conduct an in-depth investigation.” Illumina argued that since Grail does not do business in the European Union, the European Commission does not have the power to review the merger. The company also said at the time that if it didn't complete the acquisition, it would end up in a situation where the terms of the deal would expire before there was a chance for a full review. "The decision to go ahead with the acquisition and keep the companies separate allows the regulatory processes to proceed while preserving the life-saving, pro-competitive benefits of this vertical transaction without the deal expiring," said Charles Dadswell, general counsel at Illumina Die The EU Commission's new Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) has drawn considerable criticism from the industry, as compliance with the EU-IVDR may be less burdensome than previously thought. RQM+, a regulatory, quality and clinical consultancy, published a white paper earlier this year highlighting synergies between IVDR requirements and FDA requirements in the United States. It does not change the application date but allows for a phased introduction of IVDR based on device classification with a shorter timeframe for higher risk devices," said Carlos Galamba, Vice President of IVD Intelligence and Innovation at RQM+ and author of the article I can not overemphasize how important it is for IVD manufacturers to verify that they have enough clinical evidence to give themselves sufficient time to take remedial action," Galamba said, by making full use of what already exists. The RQM+ paper "Performance Data and EU IVDR: Improving operational efficiency through compliance" can be found here.

IISc Bengaluru Fastest Rising South Asian University, 4 IITs in Top 200

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a London-based global university analyst, on Thursday released the 19th edition of the world's most consulted international university rankings. (Author: Gardener)

Bengaluru FastestThe Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru is the fastest growing South Asian university among the coveted top 200 universities of the QS World University Rankings, up 31 spots while four IITs are also featured in the category and in comparison have ranked higher than the previous edition. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a London-based global university analyst, on Thursday released the 19th edition of the world's most consulted international university rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, which peaked at 172nd place, is India's second best institution, rising five spots, while IIT Delhi rose 11 spots to rank 174th. The ranking revealed that IIT Guwahati moved up 11 places, achieving its best result of any edition of the QS World University Rankings, while IIT Indore is the highest-ranked debutant in this edition, ranking 396th worldwide. OP Jindal Global University is the top-ranked private university according to the rankings for the third year in a row. A total of 41 Indian universities were included in the ranking, of which 12 have improved, 12 have remained stable, 10 have declined and seven universities have been added. According to the ranking, 13 Indian universities improved their research impact compared to global competitors and saw an increase in Citations per Faculty (CpF) score. Conversely, Indian universities continue to struggle with measuring institutional teaching capacity of QS. Thirty of India's 41 ranked universities have suffered declines in QS's Faculty to Student Ratio (FSR) indicator, with only four seeing improvements, it showed. Encouragingly, however, two Indian universities now rank in the top 250 for faculty and student ratio, compared to none in previous editions. The top performers in this metric are Savitribai Phule Pune University (225th for FSR) and OP Jindal Global University (235th for FSR), followed by IISc Bengaluru (276th for FSR). "This edition of the QS World University Rankings reflects the excellent work being done by several Indian universities to improve their research visibility, with positive consequences for their reputation on the global stage." Conversely, our dataset also suggests that the Indian higher education sector still strives for adequate teaching capacities. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the only two national universities to be found in the top 100 in the world in this crucial metric, ranking 59th and 72nd respectively and improving their ranking year on year, as showed up. India is also struggling with QS internationalization metrics. For example, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (1001-1200) is the top performing local institution for proportion of international faculty, ranking 411th globally. On the other hand, Amity University (1001-1200) leads the country in terms of the proportion of international students and ranks 542nd in the world. This year's QS World University Ranking is the largest ever, with 1,418 institutions across a hundred campuses, up from 1,300 last year.
