Conor McGegor and Nate Diaz had one of the meanest and most lucrative feuds in UFC history. The two fights they had in 2016 drove UFC pay-per-view buys to unprecedented heights, and to this day both men take the opportunity to taunt the other at every opportunity. It seems obvious UFC would maximize this rivalry with a trilogy fight before it's all said and done, and it's widely believed that Diaz's last fight in UFC could actually be against McGregor with his current contract. However, amidst the water bottles being slung at press conferences and jabs at the internet, McGregor has developed a love for the Diaz brothers. Nate and Nick Diaz are two legends of the fighting game. McGregor has spoken of his appreciation for Nate's ground play a few times. Following his struggles with Dustin Poirier in 2020, McGregor likened his development on the ground to his former nemesis Nate. He tweeted: "I'm very happy with my ground attacks from below right now. "He backed away from me! I have now developed a wilder version of Nate's floor play. "If Nate goes down, no one follows. He also showed his respect for Nate in defeat after they first met in 2016. “I felt like I beat him in the first round but I was inefficient with my energy. But I'm humble, win or lose, and I respect Nate; He came in, he took the last shot. In the rematch, McGregor managed to kick his way to victory. The Irishman had learned his lessons from his first fight with Diaz and he viciously kicked Diaz's legs when he tried to apply pressure. When asked by Joe Rogan after the fight if the leg kicks were the plan to fight Diaz, McGregor said: "You're damn right, that was it. He (Nate Diaz) took her better than we expected. "He didn't show up, didn't let me know. That toughness and consistency that he has crept back into the later rounds but I'm still happy to win. “It was one hell of a fight; He was a damn good competitor and brought out the best in me.” The two have respected each other since their fights, even if they don't like each other. McGregor on Nate's toughness: "When he entered I threw some elbows too. Tell you what, man, his face was open and he was still cumming. He was still coming straight at me. "You have to respect that. You have to respect Nate Diaz and his fighting style. Diaz, a man who rarely praises his peers, said he realized McGregor was a real fighter. "But he (Conor McGregor) also knows all about the real shit. You recognize the real fighting game. “We have something on our hands here, a real fight. That's what dragged the trash into this fight, the authenticity of that shit. There is no such thing in fighting games. That's the real truth of the game, and the truth will set you free.” McGregor went on to say his best opponent is “Nate Diaz. He actually used Nick Diaz's praise as an opportunity to smear Nate. Conor this week called Nick a "true fighting legend" and says the older brother's boxing is far superior to Nate's. "Can see the clear difference between the two brothers after last night [Nick vs Lawler in 2021]. I made you," McGregor tweeted. McGregor and Diaz will be forever linked and are one of the most important rivals in the development of the UFC. Even if the rivalry continues to this day, there will always be professional respect.
