How the 'Merchant of Death' Might Make Brittney Griner's Return Difficult

How the 'Merchant of Death' Might Make Brittney Griner's Return Difficult (Author: Gardener)

After adeptly evading law enforcement for more than a decade, the world's most notorious arms dealer made a reckless mistake. Viktor Bout risked venturing outside of Russia, the only place where his close ties to senior government and military officials offered him tacit protection, the only place where he could feel safe from arrest and extradition. On March 5, 2008, Bout flew from Moscow to Bangkok to meet with representatives of a Colombian guerrilla group intent on overthrowing the country's democratically elected government. Bout came to secure a lucrative deal to ship millions of dollars worth of military-grade weapons from Eastern European warehouses to jungle outposts in Colombia. What Bout didn't know when he checked into his five-star Bangkok hotel was that he had fallen into a trap. The two alleged Colombian rebels sitting opposite Bout's hotel conference table the next afternoon were actually U. When undercover agents asked Bout about missiles that could shoot down American planes and weapons that could kill American forces, Bout explained himself Bout agreed to provide these and reportedly declared, "We have the same enemy." Just minutes later, Thai police stormed the room. S. government, it was a great victory,” Michael Braun, the DEA's former chief of operations, told Yahoo Sports. "When he was arrested, he was arguably the largest and most sophisticated arms dealer in the world. He was the guy who could certainly deliver anything to any bad actor anywhere in the world. "Merchant of Death" and the inspiration for the 2005 Nicolas Cage film "Lord of War" seems Russia's prime target in a potential prisoner swap to be against American basketball star Brittney Griner. On May 13, Russia handcuffed Griner through a Moscow courtroom and extended her pre-trial detention by a month, an ad some experts interpreted as an attempt to increase pressure within the U. On the same day Several state Russian news outlets reported that Russia was willing to swap Bout for her Griner: While Griner's loved ones have urged the Biden administration to do whatever it takes to bring the two-time Olympic champion home, Russia's seemingly one-sided asking price complicates negotiations. They have military ones Guns to rogue leaders and insurgents cal groups across Africa and beyond, escalating conflicts from machetes and one-shot rifles to grenade launchers and AK-47s. Russia claims Griner flew to Moscow on February 17 with vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage. S. should consider bringing Bout back to Russia in exchange for Griner and other wrongly imprisoned American prisoners. Among them is the federal judge who sentenced Bout to 25 years in prison but says she wishes she could have been more lenient. "To me it's unfair that he was tarred with that moniker 'Merchant of Death,'" Shira Scheindlin told Yahoo Sports. "I don't think he's as bad as he was made to look." Viktor Bout, also known as the "dealer of death," shows a victory sign after a Bangkok court initially rejected a US extradition request. How bad is Viktor Bout? Russian state media call him a "businessman" and an "entrepreneur". His previous website said he was a "born salesman with an undying love of aviation". A longtime DEA agent once described him as "one of the most dangerous men on earth." Born in the Soviet outpost of Tajikistan to Russian parents, Bout, 55, showed an early aptitude for mastering languages. He is reportedly fluent in more than half a dozen languages, including English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Uzbek. Having his degree recognized by the prestigious Military Institute of Foreign Languages, Bout then worked as a Soviet military translator in Africa in the late 1980s. The military language school was known as a training ground for the Soviet Foreign Intelligence Directorate known as the GRU. Military planes were abandoned on Soviet airstrips because there was no money for maintenance or fuel and nobody flew them. Drawing on his military and intelligence connections, Bout acquired several Antonov cargo planes, known for their high airlift capacity and ability to land in treacherous terrain. These became the starting point for a private fleet of more than 50 Soviet cargo planes and a network of air cargo companies that transported goods to and from distant conflict zones. Bout's planes reportedly transported everything from freshly cut flowers to frozen food to UN peacekeeping forces, but authorities say he made most of his profits supplying weapons and ammunition from old Soviet stockpiles. At the height of Bout, according to the US Treasury Department, it had "the capacity to ship tons of tanks, helicopters and weapons to virtually any point in the world." The ability to deliver this type of firepower quickly and with pinpoint accuracy helped Bout build a client list that included some of the world's most notorious executives. He made $50 million providing military equipment to the Taliban, the US said. Angola was a country where Bout was allegedly opposed to UN and US anti-arms trade sanctions By the late 1990s, Bout was selling Soviet-era arms to both sides of Angola's civil war – the Marxist government and UNITA rebels, who tried to overthrow her. "He has undermined our efforts to bring peace to Angola," the former State Department source said. Bout stayed one step ahead of international investigators by repeatedly registering and re-registering his planes in far-flung countries, which allowed him to avoid inspection and oversight. It also helped that Bout's alleged gun deals often fell into a legal gray area, making it difficult to arrest or prosecute him. In the final years of the Clinton administration, as civil war, bloodshed and ethnic strife ravaged parts of Africa, the National Security Council authorized surveillance of government and rebel leaders in war zones like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Congo. NSC officials eventually found that every conflict had a common thread: Bout provided the guns. The NSC's efforts to apprehend Bout eventually foundered when he could neither find an American law that applied to him nor persuade an African ally to issue a warrant for his arrest. In a 2000 letter to the NSC's Director of African Affairs, Gayle Smith, a South African official stated: "It is not clear from the information provided whether [Bout] committed an act which was criminalized under South African law and was South Africa's jurisdiction falls." S. attempted to build a case against Bout, the Pentagon reportedly hired him as a valued contractor. According to Douglas Farah and Stephen Braun, co-authors of the 2007 book Merchant of Death, Bout received Millions of dollars to ship goods and equipment to American troops in Iraq N. also investigated Bout and accused him of supplying arms across Africa A UN report said Bout had "at least five passports" and "at least five aliases" A subsequent UN report claimed that Bout supplied arms to the heinous regime of Liberian warlord Charles Taylor to "gain illegal access to." to get diamonds". N. reports had no legal weight, they shed light on the work that Bout had long done in the shadows. Mounting pressure uprooted Bout and his wife from their home in the United Arab Emirates, prompting him to retire to Moscow. The Russian government's protection made him virtually untouchable there...unless someone could lure him out. Viktor Bout (C) lands after arriving at Westchester County Airport November 16, 2010 in White Plains, New York. Bout was extradited from Thailand to the United States. (US Department of Justice via Getty Images) Juan Zarate had just witnessed DEA agents capture Syrian arms dealer Monzer al-Kassar via an elaborate covert operation abroad. Now Zarate wondered if Braun's special operations branch could come up with a similar plan to take out Bout. "Every other three-letter and four-letter agency shot at him," Braun recalls, as Zarate told him. "Could you try to bring him to court?" Over the next few months, the DEA worked out its plan to have agents passed off as members of the FARC, a violent Colombian rebel faction funded by drug trafficking and other criminal activities. S. had already classified them as a terrorist group and because the Colombian guerrillas were probably on the market for the same weapons that Bout had previously supplied to other groups. In November 2007, the DEA initiated Operation Relentless with the help of an informant who was a friend of Bout and his associate Andrew Smulian. At the DEA's request, the whistleblower emailed Smulian announcing that he had a potential deal for Bout. After assessing Bout's interest, Smulian replied to the whistleblower, "He may be able to get his hands on items you need." The covert operation culminated in March 2008 when the DEA successfully bailed Bout into his Russian safe haven to leave and fly to Bangkok to complete the deal DEA agents chose Bangkok because they had good relationships with the Thai police and because they felt Bout would not be suspicious of traveling to a city that had so many Time zones away from the U Pressed against a wall with his hands raised, DEA Regional Director Tom Pasquarello entered the hotel's conference room. What struck the agent was how calm Bout was with his life on fire and a dozen guns aimed at him. Do you have anything to say?" Pasquarello asked Bout. "Game over," the arms dealer replied coolly. Posing himself as a pawn in an American conspiracy, Bout testified in a Thai criminal court that he ran a Legi air cargo business and that he had traveled to Bangkok to relax and try to strike a deal to sell cargo planes. Either Russia was eager to protect a citizen arrested abroad, or aware of what intelligence secrets Bout might reveal if extradited, Russia also attempted to intervene on his behalf. Not only has the Kremlin publicly condemned the charges against Bout, American officials have also become aware of underhanded Russian attempts to prevent his extradition to the U. "Putin and other senior government officials were really trying to move heaven and earth and bring him back to Russia," Braun said. After a two-and-a-half year legal tug-of-war, Thailand finally agreed to hand over Bout to the US. For Pasquarello, it meant a few anxious days , to ensure Russia neither freed Bout from his maximum-security Thai prison nor arranged for him to "meet a mysterious death". On the day Bout was due to leave Thailand, the DEA took no chances. A decoy squad of police vehicles left prison and drove to an airport in Bangkok. Minutes later, a second convoy drove to another airport, this time with Bout as part of the journey. When Bout's flight landed at Westchester County Airport in New York, two DEA agents escorted him off the plane .First time the Merchant of Death was on American soil.WNBA star and two-time e Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner leaves a courtroom after a hearing in Khimki, just outside Moscow, May 13, 2022. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was arrested at Moscow airport in February after vape cartridges found in her luggage containing cannabis-derived oil, which could carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Viktor Bout's most unexpected American ally turned out to be the federal judge presiding over his case. For years, Scheindlin has publicly questioned whether Bout is as villainous as his menacing nickname and cartoonish reputation suggest. After a federal jury convicted Bout on all four charges, including conspiring to kill Americans, Scheindlin denied the government's motion to sentence him to life in prison. Scheindlin instead gave Bout the minimum possible sentence of 25 years, calling it "fundamentally unfair to this defendant" that she wasn't given an opportunity to be more lenient. When reached by phone from Yahoo Sports last week, Scheindlin said her stance hadn't changed. Echoing her arguments from Bout's 2012 indictment hearing, Scheindlin pointed out that prior to his arrest, Bout had not committed a crime that could be charged in an American court and that there was no reason to believe that the DEA would not have targeted him with their covert operation. "I found the sentence too long, but I didn't have flexibility," said Scheindlin. Since his conviction in 2012, Bout has been at the top of the Kremlin's wish list for prisoner exchanges. Russia has repeatedly signaled its willingness to host a possible exchange for jailed Americans, but so far US experts speaking to Yahoo Sports agreed that securing Bout's release was due to his high-level ties to the government and military intelligence for Russia has priority. They said that Bout operated under state protection throughout his career as an arms dealer and that he often served the government's foreign policy interests after Vladimir Putin came to power and reconsolidated Russia's fragmented intelligence services. For Farah, co-author of the authoritative book on Bout, Russia's efforts to get Bout back serve to reward him for arming his allies, staying loyal after his arrest and never agreeing, as a source for defectors to serve. Blank, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, drives Russia's interest in Bout out of fear of the secrets he might reveal if he were forced to tell US authorities about Russia's secret arms deals. "This is a guy who knows an awful lot about Russian arms smuggling," Blank said. “He sat at the center of a whole network of Russian arms deals, all of which traced back to Putin. Since a prisoner swap is Bout's only possible route back to Russia for the next 11 years, his New York attorney says he had "a guideline" when he took over as lead attorney. Steve Zissou openly admits that he is trying to "change the narrative" about Bouts to "get away from the 'dealer of death' or 'notorious arms dealer'" and make a trade more palatable to the American public and the US Bouts reputation, Zissou promptly answers calls from reporters, leaves comments under articles he finds biased, and writes letters to the editor, which often remain unpublished. Zissou's message is simple: This bout "committed no crimes punishable in a US court" until the DEA targeted him. "He was retired and living in Moscow minding his own business," Zissou said. He had never expressed any ill intentions toward the US, and then the US government spent millions of dollars creating a fictional crime that didn't exist.” One factor in Bout's favor is the time since his arrest passed in 2008. After 14 years, it would be very difficult for Bout to reintegrate into an industry that is changing as rapidly as the gun trade. "You have to know the actors and the terrain and have access," Farah said. S. Magen trading a notorious arms dealer for a WNBA player allegedly caught carrying vape cartridges of marijuana oil? What if the trade was for Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence on espionage charges the US believes wrong? Scheindlin, the federal judge who convicted Bout, says she doesn't think "there would be a huge injustice to get rid of this guy and let him go back to where he came from in exchange for American citizens, who we really want back." "Given the lack of equality between him and Brittney, I think it would be fairer if the Russians were willing to release two Americans," Scheindlin said. Pasquarello, the former DEA agent who helped bring down Bout, sees things differently. He argued that it was the government's responsibility to find another way to bring Griner and Whelan home that doesn't encourage Russia and other rogue states to continue seizing Americans as trade bait. "You look at Viktor's background and how many deaths are linked to his actions and you want to trade that person?" Paquarello said. All of this gives governments an incentive to keep high-quality Americans going forward.”

During Pride, Juneteenth, and the NBA Finals, it's high time we got loud when we free Brittney Griner

American injustices are why Brittney Griner was in Russia in the first place. Take her home (Author: Gardener)

Brittney GrinerThe Minnesota Lynx Aerial Powers wear a shirt in support of Brittney Griner during the introduction for the team's WNBA basketball game against the Seattle Storm Tuesday, June 14, 2022, in Minneapolis. A time to celebrate identity, inclusion and liberation. But it's also difficult. Because during Pride, the week of June 16, WNBA icon Brittney Griner is being unjustly held in Russia around the world. Just over a month ago, the American government officially classified her arrest as an unlawful detention. For many Black women in America, especially queer Black women, the slow response of bringing Griner home was a painful reminder of how they were wiped out. Nearly 100,000 Black women and girls went missing in 2020, accounting for about a third of the nearly 270,000 women and girls reported missing. Racism and sexism are already making black women more likely to be discriminated against. Griner's imprisonment in Russia demonstrates this disparity. "I worry that if something happened to me, the US wouldn't care," says Amarachi Umez-Eronini, a native Nigerian and director of statistical programming and biostatistics at Watertown. "I think she's a masculine-presenting woman of color and unfortunately her life isn't valued like other Americans'. Griner, a black queer woman, seven-time All-Star, two-time Olympic gold medalist, shouldn't have played in Russia at all. But American injustices prompted the Phoenix Mercury Center to supplement their income by playing with Russian team Ekaterinburg. The average NBA player makes about $5.4 million. For the WNBA, that number is just $120,600. This stark inequality is the reason why so many women play abroad. Kathy Delaney-Smith has been at the forefront of fighting for women's equality in sport since she first signed Title IX. Back then, the legendary Harvard women's basketball coach filed lawsuits over practice time and uniforms and never stopped campaigning for women. "I've seen firsthand how ugly the world is and how ugly it can be for players like Brittney, the staring, the rumours, the discrimination," says Delaney-Smith. "I'm glad that people are going public with this and starting to use their voices, and the NBA and the WNBA are using their power. The Boston Celtics wore "We Are BG" shirts in practice before Game 2 and made their freedom a part of the press conference. Grant Williams coordinated with the WNBA Players' Association to make this happen and supported wearebg.org and the petition to bring them home. After 40 seasons and an Ivy League record of 630 wins and 11 conference championships, Delaney-Smith retired this year. But she's not done fighting injustice. Griner's detention, she says, is heartbreaking. "It was a great sadness on many levels," says Delaney-Smith. “We do not live in a just world. People don't even know we're entitled to Title IX. And then you have to have the confidence and courage to speak up, because there are consequences for speaking out, but it's time. On Monday, State Department officials met with members of Griner's team, Phoenix Mercury, to discuss efforts to get her released. For Dréa Hudson, it's the kind of action she needs to see. "What does it take to get them out of there," asks Hudson, a Boston-based branding and marketing expert. “We need solutions. It makes you think about what could happen to you. She's a WNBA figure, a queer community figure, a black community figure. She is being held unjustly. It's complicated and scary. Given the war, the nuances of identity, and the complications of negotiations, we don't know how long this might take or how much the United States is willing to sacrifice. Another American citizen, Paul Whelan, is a former Marine. He was arrested in 2018 and convicted of espionage in June 2020 and sentenced to 16 years. With both he and Griner being held unfairly, it seems their cases may be linked. Umez-Eronini says liberation is a higher hurdle for queer women of color. "We have to constantly work on being heard and seen in all areas of life," she says. "I think the biggest change will ask for more from America than it's willing to give." When we say, "We are BG, we are Brittney Griner," it's about acknowledging the injustice of her being held captive in Russia , and the way women, black women and especially black queer women face oppression in the states as well.

Brittney Griner's wife says she has lost 'trust' in the US government

WNBA star Brittney Griner was scheduled to speak to her wife for the first time in four months, but plans were messed up by the US State Department. (Author: Gardener)

Brittney Griner'sCherelle and Brittney Griner, the WNBA star imprisoned in Russia, were scheduled to speak for the first time on Saturday to mark their fourth wedding anniversary. The S. Embassy line was off line because it was the weekend, a US State Department spokesman told ABC News, and the call never went through. I was done, fed up," Cherelle Griner said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I'm pretty sure I texted [Brittney's] agent and said, 'I don't want to speak to anyone. A State Department spokesman told ABC News: "We deeply regret that due to a logistical error, Brittney Griner was unable to speak to her wife. We remain in regular contact with the families of the hostages or those unjustly detained; we are grateful for their partnership and feedback; and we continue to work to ensure that we communicate and share information in a way that is beneficial to our families." Chicago Sky's Candace Parker #3 and Chicago Sky's Stefanie Dolson #31 defend Phoenix Mercury's Brittney Griner #42 in the first half at the Footprint Center, Oct. 10, 2021, in Phoenix. Cherelle Griner said the call was scheduled for two weeks. "I find it unacceptable and I have no faith in our government right now," she told the AP. If I can't trust you to take an after hours call on Saturday, how can I trust you to actually negotiate on my wife's behalf to get home? The inability to reach her wife is a "unfortunate mistake," adding that another phone call is planned. "This was an unfortunate error and the State Department is working to correct it as soon as possible," Jean-Pierre said, but Brittney Griner has been incarcerated in Russia since February and last week her pre-trial detention was extended until at least July 2. According to Russian state media agency TASS Cherelle Griner was taken into custody February 17 at Sheremetyevo International Airport after officers allegedly found vape cartridges containing hash oil in her bag with hash oil illegal in Russia Interview last month that her wife texted her wrote when she was first taken into custody, but Brittney's phone was stolen shortly after.Cherelle Griner, wife of WNBA superstar Brittney Griner, who has been incarcerated in a Russian prison for nearly 100 days, spoke on May 24, 2022 for the first time in an exclusive interview with Robin Roberts, but they had not communicated over the phone "sporadi sh" through letters, Cherelle Griner said. "[Brittney] wrote me a letter and was like, 'Babe, I know you want to go downstairs, but not yet,'" she said. Every single day is important for me to be healthy, to be vigilant, to be attentive to make sure that she comes back," she added, "according to a representative of the Khimki court of the Moscow region, TASS reported. MORE: Brittney Griner's wife opens up about WNBA star's detention in Russia She has been charged with "large-scale drug trafficking" and could face up to 10 years in prison, according to the New York Times. The South American government classified Brittney Griner's case as "unlawfully detained" in Russia on May 3, meaning the US would work to negotiate her release. Brittney Griner should not be jailed. She should not be jailed a single one detained for a day longer," said Ned Price, a spokesman for the State Department. Price also said the State Department continues to work to gain regular access to US detainees in Russia, including Paul Whelan, who has been in a Russian jail since 2018. WNBA star Brittney Griner's pre-trial detention in Russia is extended as the US working to negotiate her release Russia's invasion of Ukraine began a week after Griner's incarceration. Some officials are concerned that Americans detained in Russia could be used as leverage in the ongoing conflict. Cherelle Griner told GMA she would like to speak to President Joe Biden. She's a political pawn," she said. When asked about a possible meeting between Cherelle Griner and President Biden, Jean-Pierre said, "We have nothing to say about a possible phone call or meeting." Says Brittney, president of the WNBA Players Association Griner is being held in Russia "due to a gender issue." ABC News' Mark Osborne, Ben Gittleson, Natalia Shumskaia, and Tanya Stukalova contributed to this report.

Wife of WNBA's Brittney Griner says scheduled call never happened

Cherelle and Brittney Griner have not spoken on the phone in the four months since the basketball star's arrest in Russia, where she remains incarcerated. (Author: Gardener)

Brittney GrinerWASHINGTON (AP) - WNBA star Brittney Griner tried nearly a dozen times to call her wife through the American Embassy in Russia on Saturday, the couple's fourth anniversary, but they couldn't connect because the phone line at the embassy is not busy was, Cherelle Griner said Monday. The couple have not spoken on the phone in the four months since Griner's arrest in Russia, where she remains detained. That should have changed on Saturday, when a long-awaited call after receiving approval from the Russian government was finally set to take place. But the day came and went without any contact, and Cherelle Griner agonized over what had gone wrong and suspected, at least at first, that the Russian authorities had thwarted the call. On Monday, she said she learned a more staggering truth from her wife's lawyers: Brittney Griner had, in fact, attempted to call 11 times over a period of several hours using a number given to her at the US Embassy in Moscow, who the couple had said would then put the call through to Cherelle Griner in Phoenix. But each time the call went unanswered because the counter in the embassy where the phone rang was apparently unmanned on Saturday. I was done, fed up," Cherelle Griner said in an interview with The Associated Press, recounting how an anniversary she had been eagerly awaiting was spent in tears instead. It's going to take me a minute to sort out my feelings and just tell everyone I'm not available right now.” Because I was just blown away. The State Department said Monday, "We deeply regret that due to a logistical error, Brittney Griner was unable to speak to her wife." The department reiterated that its priority is no higher than the safety of Americans abroad and that it is in regular contact with Families of hostages and unlawfully detained. For Cherelle Griner, the experience added to already smoldering frustrations with the US. Although US officials have repeatedly said they are working behind the scenes to bring the two-time Olympic gold medalist home from Russia, she said she was "very upset" about the bullshit, especially since the call had been on the schedule for two weeks and nobody had warned her during this time that it could be logistically impossible because of the weekend. She added: "I find it unacceptable and I have no faith in our government at the moment. If I can't trust you to take an after hours Saturday call, how can I trust you to actually negotiate on my wife's behalf to get home? Cherelle Griner said a contact in the US government apologized to her for the mistake. She said she has since learned that the one number Brittney Griner was given to dial handles calls from prisoners, usually Monday through Friday but not weekends, so no one was there to transfer the call. The State Department in May declared her unjustly detained and placed her case under the oversight of the President's special envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government's chief hostage negotiator. Cherelle Griner says that until now she has had to rely solely on other people's assessments of her wife's condition. Lawyers and consular affairs officials have been able to speak to the basketball star, but her wife has not. She went to sleep at 5 p.m. the night before the call. so that she was awake and alert at midnight to receive the expected call from Russia to Phoenix, which never came. "That was such a big moment because for the first time I could really tell if she's okay," Cherelle Griner said, describing it as a "life-or-death" opportunity to see how her wife is actually held .

Brittney Griner's long-awaited call with her wife was botched by a "logistical error" by the State Department

The WNBA superstar's wife said she has "zero confidence in our government" to free Griner from Russian custody after the heartbreaking mistake. (Author: Gardener)

Brittney Griner's* WNBA superstar Brittney Griner has been jailed in Russia since February on drug-related charges. * Her wife, Cherelle, had plans to speak to Griner for the first time in over 100 days on Saturday. * The call failed due to a "logistical error" at the US Embassy in Moscow. A "logistical error" by the State Department botched plans for Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle to speak for the first time in more than 100 days. The WNBA superstar has been unjustly detained in Russia since her February 17 arrest when officials accused her of traveling with a vape cartridge in her luggage. On the Saturday of her fourth wedding anniversary, she was finally to hear her wife's voice. But the phone call, which had been in the works for several weeks, never materialized after US embassy staff in Moscow failed to answer the phone to put Griner through to her wife. The seven-time WNBA All-Star dialed the number she was given 11 times over several hours to reach Cherelle, the Associated Press reported. Cherelle believed that finally hearing her wife's voice would allow her to "really know if she's okay or if she's just seconds away from nonexistent." "It was such a big moment because for the first time I could really tell if she was okay," Cherelle told the AP. A State Department spokesman told Insider, "We deeply regret that Brittney Griner was unable to speak to her wife due to a logistical error." on her call, "was exacerbated in part by the fact that our embassy in Moscow is subject to significant restrictions due to ongoing tensions over Russia's war in Ukraine." Cherelle initially suspected that she and her wife were unable to establish a connection due to interference on the Russian side. I was done, fed up,” when she finally learned that the phone Griner repeatedly dialed the US Embassy in Moscow was not busy. "We deeply regret that due to a logistical error, Brittney Griner was unable to speak to her wife." A State Department spokesman told Insider, "We remain in regular contact with the families of the hostages or those wrongly detained; we are grateful for their partnership and feedback; and we continue to work to ensure we communicate and share information in a way that is useful to our families," the spokesperson added. But for Cherelle, who has repeatedly urged President Joe Biden and his administration to take action on her wife's behalf, the one heartbreaking mistake was enough to shatter any goodwill she left with American officials. "I find it unacceptable and I have no faith in our government right now," Cherelle told the AP. "If I can't trust you to take a Saturday call how can I trust you outside of business hours to actually negotiate on my wife's behalf to get home?" The US government has repeatedly assured Griner's family that their release is a top priority. But the State Department's blunder is only the latest misstep, casting doubt on their efforts to bring them home. Despite several public requests to meet with Biden or members of his administration, Cherelle has yet to discuss her wife's situation with the president. And while she told the AP that she still hopes she can connect with Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris, Cherelle concedes that "it feels like a no at this point." Aron Solomon, who serves as chief legal analyst for Esquire Digital, told Insider that "the debacle that was this weekend's failed phone call speaks volumes" about the seriousness and urgency with which the government is handling Griner's case. "I can't disagree with her," Solomon said, referring to Cherelle's expressed distrust of US officials. "I keep wondering if the US government would use the same strategy if [NBA superstar] Kyrie Irving were wrongly arrested," he added. Griner's agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, declined to comment on whether the State Department's mix-up affected her confidence in the government's handling of her client's case. Instead, she directed Insiders to her most recent tweet, in which she wrote, "Every time I think about Griner's calls going unanswered, my heart breaks in pieces. "If #BrittneyGriner is a priority, @POTUS will be meeting with Brittney's family and this administration will do whatever is necessary to get her home quickly and safely," Colas added in a later post. Griner's detention was extended for the second time in a month on June 15, keeping the Phoenix Mercury Center in foreign custody until at least July 2. However, Solomon previously told Insider that the new deadline is "as fictional as any other date." and expressed serious doubts that Griner's case would ever go to trial. "Anyone who is still taking Russia's word on the Griner case is stupid," he said.

She said the call had been scheduled for weeks. 123 days without hearing her voice. My heart breaks in pieces every time I think about it - but it's nothing compared to the reality BG and her family must endure," Brittney Griner's agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, tweeted Monday. Price on Tuesday blamed the matter in part on the Russian government's staffing restrictions on the US embassy in Moscow. "It was a logistical problem, partly exacerbated by the fact that our embassy in Moscow has significant staffing restrictions," he said at a State Department briefing. "And if we have problems with the telephone system there, for example, the technicians are not there. In fact, they are not even in Russia. They must be in a third country as the Russian Federation has placed significant restrictions on our embassy and its operations." "So all of that compounded what was a mistake, which was a logistical mistake and we look forward to the opportunity for Brittney Griner to speak to your wife shortly," Price said. Brittney Griner, 31, has been in custody since February on charges of drug smuggling in Russia and her detention has been extended until at least early July. The State Department said she was wrongly detained. Last week, State Department officials met with members of their WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Cherelle Griner by phone in mid-May, but calls are mounting, including from Cherelle Griner herself, for a meeting with President Joe Biden. "If #BrittneyGriner is a priority, @POTUS will meet with Brittney's family and this government will do whatever is necessary to get her home quickly and safely," Kagawa Colas said. "Every day is precious and not another should go by without taking the necessary actions to bring BG home."
