"Off the Charts" defense helps Ravens overcome 4 interceptions from QB Lamar Jackson in a 16-10 win over Browns

When the Ravens needed a stop late Sunday night when their offensive against the Cleveland Browns just couldn't get them across the line, they featured Ray Lewis on the video board at M&T Bank Stadium. This is the era of Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, and it probably will be a while longer, but sometimes the original recipe works just as well as the newfangled stuff. (Author: Gardener)

Lamar JacksonRavens Safety Geno Stone (26) and outside linebacker Justin Houston (50) grab a fumble from Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield in the second quarter in Baltimore on Sunday night. On one night of Jackson's worst career, it was the Ravens defense that secured a pivotal division win and capitalized on the franchise's old glory in yet another ferocious prime-time matchup. With the Ravens having to keep the Browns out of the end zone for the final 70 seconds of the game, they didn't even let Cleveland past its first down marker. Tyus Bowser, who played in Lewis' standard purple for the linebacker in his 17 years, broke a third down pass and stopped the tight end David Njoku 3 yards from the sticks one game later for a 16-10 win to seal. "Defense was just off the charts," said coach John Harbaugh after his 23rd win against the Browns (6-6) as coach of the Ravens, who with the New England Patriots (against the New York Jets) most against a team was in this range. “I mean, it's one of the best defensive performances we've seen here in a long time. To keep this offense like they did, to keep this rash attack like they did… I thought our guys played extremely well on the defensive across the board. ”It was a win that the Ravens (8-3) gladly took on their trip to Pittsburgh next Sunday, where the staggering Steelers (5-5-1) are waiting. The Ravens held Cleveland to 262 yards overall offensive, the Browns' second-fewest that season, and forced two turnovers. With their third win in four games, the Ravens retained their lead in the AFC North in front of the Bengals, who opened the game on Sunday with the throttling of Pittsburgh in Cincinnati with 41:10. And when the Tennessee Titans fell to New England, the Ravens regained their place at the top of the AFC. The performance on Sunday wasn't one that Jackson would like to revisit. In his first game since a mysterious illness that knocked him out in Week 11, he finished 20v32 for 165 yards, a touchdown and the worst four interceptions of his career. He was the first quarterback to throw four picks for a win since 2013, and he's set a career high for interceptions in one season (12). According to Stats Perform, the Ravens are the only team in the Super Bowl era that scores less than 17 points, completes less than 325 yards, throws at least four interceptions more than their opponent and still wins. The teams in these scenarios were 0-275-1 in the regular season and the postseason before Sunday. Again and again a much criticized defense brought the Ravens out of trouble. Their goal for Sunday, said cornerback Marlon Humphrey, was to keep the Browns high-level attack at 80 yards. Cleveland only made it halfway. Although Calais Campbell was sidelined by a concussion for the first time that year, Browns running backs Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb finished with a combined 36 yards for 15 carries. Mayfield added 4 yards. The Browns' longest carry-all game lasted just 9 yards. "The key was definitely to stop the run and have our chances with Baker and his guns," said Humphrey. Mayfield, injured in what may be his last game in Baltimore with the Browns, finished 18-on-37 for 247 yards and a touchdown. “We felt like everything was going through her running game. As soon as they get their running game going, the game action comes. So we figured if we could make them one-dimensional, our best odds would be like this. ”On the offensive, the Ravens got just enough from Jackson to lead for more than three-quarters. After a terrible first half with three interceptions-in-five drop-backs, he came out after half without his black sleeves and with some old magic. In the first half, he'd finished 10 for 17 for 74 yards and watched the Ravens score two field goals. In her first possession of the second half, he went 4 for 4 for 63 yards and delivered a highlight reel touchdown. His last two completions on the trip were Vintage Jackson. Third and fourth in midfield, Jackson scrambled to the sidelines before throwing a high arcing pass at Mark Andrews, who was sprinting on an improvised route against safety when he got back to the ball but also caught it with one hand . "I knew it was a catch," said Andrews, who led the Ravens with four receptions for 65 yards. Three games after finishing 39 yards, Jackson bought just enough time to get you into the end zone. Then he fell back and farther back and farther back until he was 15 yards behind where he'd taken the shotgun. He swung around just before Myles Garrett could line him up for a sack, spotted Andrews face up, and threw on the goal line. Andrews' 13 yard diving grave gave the Ravens a 13-3 lead and Jackson a chance to breathe. With the touchdown secured, he pointed with both hands at Garrett, who stared at him in apparent disbelief before coming over to hug the Browns star. "He didn't really say anything," said Jackson. Supported by a rough-the-passer penalty against Bowser (a sack and three quarterback hits), the Browns covered 87 yards in five games. Mayfield found tight end David Njoku for a 20 yard sliding catch which was confirmed after a long review. With just over a quarter remaining, the Ravens had a 13-10 lead. Towards the end of another offensively challenged fourth quarter - just two Browns first downs, one more interception by Jackson - Tucker gave the Ravens some breath a little more than a minute before the end and nailed a 49-yarder, his 55th. "Our defense, we want to be proud of whether they can score a goal in the end," said Humphrey. “When we're [on defense] we only have to stop the team four times, [and] we want to be proud of the delivery. J. [Mosley] made that choice against the Browns [in week 17 of 2018]. And it's so special when you end the game on the defensive. Taking a knee is the best game in the game, but a fourth downstop is right off the bat. "The first half of Sunday wasn't the offensive blast that was the teams' last prime-time meeting, a 47-42 instant The Ravens' classic win in Cleveland last December with 35 points in the fourth quarter alone. Jackson hit his career high of three interceptions in less than three minutes. On the second, security Grant Delpit kicked a wired pass across the center to Andrews On the third, Harrison took advantage of security from Jackson's apparent miscommunication with Andrews, who ran in one direction as Jackson crossed into the other, to Harrison. "I feel like these drives, when the wiretapping came on, we had something on these drives "said Jackson, unable to identify any common denominator in the interceptions. The Browns' first-half sales were less, a about more creative. Towards the end of the second quarter, with Cleveland at the edge of field goal reach, wide receiver Jarvis Landry (six catches for 111 yards) snapped a shotgun and waited for someone to open. Ravens outside linebacker Odafe Oweh tracked him down for a strip sack, and inside linebacker Patrick Queen threw himself on the fumble for turnover. Two drives later, after Cleveland benefited from Jackson's first pick for a short field field goal drive, it was Mayfield who ended up as a punchline. With a further drop in field goal, Mayfield rowed and rowed back to buy time from Oweh and safety to Chuck Clark. When he finally got to the throw, he did so without the ball. Oweh fell on the fist at 49 of the Ravens; a team sack was credited to their defense. "That just happened with the pump counterfeit," Mayfield said. Injuries did Cleveland a disservice. The Browns lost all-pro right tackle Jack Conklin, who made his first start since an elbow injury in Week 8, to a knee injury in the first quarter after Oweh ran him over in a bull rush. A close end Harrison Bryant went on with an ankle injury in the first half. As the Browns hobbled back from Mayfield to Cleveland with questions about short- and long-term viability, the Ravens vowed to make the most of their sixth win this season with six points or less. You won despite defensive implosions. You won while Jackson was fighting. There may be better teams outside of Baltimore, but there is no better place than the first. "We have our own fate in hand, which is a nice thing, but we have to get better," said Andrews. “We have to get better in every way, but we have a lot of fighters on this team. Like I said, we believe we trust each other and we will come every day to work, to be better, just try to be the best team we can be. I think if we do that in these weeks, especially in these league games, we will reap the benefits. "

Browns depressed and confused as they parted after losing to Ravens

CLEVELAND (AP) - A game after Baker Mayfield completed a 41-yard pass, a long win that gave the Browns momentum and gave her ailing quarterback the confidence she needed, coach Kevin Stefanski called a trick game. It backfired. The Browns had the chance to secure a wildcard spot and close the gap to the leading AFC North-Baltimore. (Author: Gardener)

RavensCleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield trains prior to an NFL football game against the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday, November 28, 2021. CLEVELAND (AP) - A game after Baker Mayfield completed a 41-yard pass, a long win that gave the Browns momentum and gave her ailing quarterback the confidence she needed, coach Kevin Stefanski called a trick game. Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield throws a pass against the Baltimore Ravens in the first half of an NFL football game on Sunday, November 28, 2021 in Baltimore. The Browns had a chance to secure a wildcard spot and fill the gap with leading AFC North Baltimore by some deeper problems in Cleveland. On Monday, Stefanski said he and his coaching staff will be spending this week analyzing what his team is doing well and where there needs to be immediate improvement before seeing the Ravens again on Dec. 12, with duties to anyone or Bank Mayfield for weeks played injured but survived a matchup against the Ravens without suffering from a new illness. Cleveland Browns kicker Chase McLaughlin, right, looks on alongside Jamie Gillan, 7, and Charley Hughlett, 47, after missing a field goal against the Baltimore Ravens in the first half of an NFL football game on Sunday, November 28, 2021 . in Baltimore. "Baker is our starting quarterback," said Stefanski. We just have to be better on the offensive. Baker has to play better. I have to train better. As always, Mayfield's performance - 18 out of 37 for 247 yards with a TD - is being micro-analyzed for not playing enough games to score a comeback win on a night when Jackson looked vulnerable and beatable. But this wasn't on Mayfield as the Browns were held at a season low of 40 yards and Cleveland's receivers couldn't break away from the Ravens' aggressive defensive defenders. If there's a split between Cleveland's players over Mayfield, keep it private, guy. It's tough when he's running for his life in a play or when other people are not open to it. (AP Photo / Nick Wass) We know there are 11 guys on the field and there are coaches and people who get us into position. But we haven't shaken Baker Mayfield. ”Despite all the offensive ineptitude, Cleveland's defense has been stable for weeks. Coordinator Joe Woods, who came under fire earlier this year, pushed all the right buttons when the Browns pestered Jackson all night and forced four food stalls. WHAT NEEDS HELP The formula to beat the Browns is simple: stop the run. The Ravens disrespect Mayfield and stack the line, which is exactly what Arizona, Pittsburgh and New England did in victories against Cleveland. Cleveland Brown's defensive end Myles Garrett reacts during the first half of an NFL football game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, November 28, 2021, in Baltimore. The lack of a true # 1 wide receiver robs Stefanski and Mayfield of a great target to count on. Cleveland receivers generally don't get enough separation, forcing Mayfield to hold the ball longer than he should. (AP Photo / Gail Burton) (AP Photo / Gail Burton) (AP Photo / Gail Burton) (AP Photo / Gail Burton) (AP Photo / Gail Burton) The second round pick is finally fully healthy after playing three games with one missed ankle injury. The NFL's 2020 Coach of the Year Stefanski has a second slump. The Browns were one of the most punished teams in the league and struggled to get 11 players on the field against the Ravens. Two-time all-pro Jack Conklin sustained a knee injury at the end of the season, a huge loss to Cleveland's fighting offensive. Conklin has torn his right patellar tendon and needs an operation. TE Harrison Bryant will likely be absent for a few weeks with a high ankle sprain. He had three catches for 50 yards before he was injured. RB Kareem Hunt should be okay with his calf tightened and kept him off the field for Cleveland's ultimate possession. Hunt missed five games with a calf sprain. 16 - The Browns' point average over their last seven games, a number that would be significantly lower without a 41-point performance against Cincinnati on November 7th. The Browns are still on the hunt for a playoff spot, but they lost all margin of error when he entered a rough five-game stretch against Baltimore, Las Vegas, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

A look at the NFL standings with the week 15 games ended (Author: Gardener)

RavensWeek 15 is already causing some fireworks in the NFL (and we have two games to go!) New England Patriots on Saturday night. The league has seen 29 games this season that were decided by a game-winning result on their last play, an incredible number of dramatic results. The Cincinnati Bengals lead the AFC North thanks to their exciting win over the Denver Broncos and the loss of Baltimore to the Green Bay Packers to the Baltimore Ravens. Thanks to the Raiders' dramatic walk-off win over the Browns on Monday night, there are now 13 teams that are .500 or better in a wild AFC playoff race as No. 2 through No. 13 are separated by two games in the ranking. Below is a breakdown of the current tables by division and what each candidate can expect on their journey. What You Should Know: The Patriots' loss to the Colts on Saturday night drops them from the top spot in the AFC, Kansas City wins on Thursday. New England currently ranks 2nd at the conference, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Tennessee. What You Should Know: A big win against the Panthers keeps the Bills last in the playoffs in the AFC. Why are the Bills the No. 7 seed, even with the same record as the Colts, Chargers, and Ravens? The Colts and Chargers have a better win rate than the Bills in conference games because Buffalo has a better win rate than the Ravens in joint games. What You Should Know: Here are the Dolphins, the first team since 1974 to start 1-7 and win six in a row to reach 7-7. Miami is 11th in the AFC and holds a conference record tiebreaker ahead of Denver. The Dolphins are a game from the last playoff seat in the conference. Baltimore is level on points with Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Buffalo for the last playoff place in the AFC - but the No. 8 in the conference. The Ravens lose the tiebreaker against the Colts and Chargers based on winning percentage in conference games and lose the tiebreaker against the Bills based on Buffalo's better record in joint games. Remaining game plan: Bengals vs. Interesting facts: The understaffed Browns fell back to last place in the AFC North with their defeat against the Raiders on Monday night. What You Should Know: The Steelers are half a game out of last playoff spot and rank ninth in the conference. Sunday's win against the Titans keeps the Steelers alive in the playoff chase - even if Pittsburgh faces three playoff contenders at the end of the year. The sweeping Jacksonville essentially eliminates Houston's chances of getting # 1 in the draft (Texans are currently # 3). Los Angeles is number 6 in the AFC and lost the conference record tiebreaker to Indianapolis, but has a better conference record than Buffalo and Baltimore - hence the number 6 seeded. What You Should Know: A loss to Cincinnati severely affected Denver's playoff chances. The Broncos occupy 13th place in the conference ranking, even though they are a game-out. What You Should Know: The Cowboys are in a prime position to block NFC East with their win over the Giants - and with their win and the defeats of the Buccaneers and Cardinals jumped to # 2 on the NFC. Remaining Schedule: Falcons, Seahawks, vs. What You Should Know: The Buccaneers failed to win NFC South after falling against the Saints on Sunday night. Tampa Bay coincides with Dallas and Arizona for the second best record in the NFC, but Dallas holds the tiebreaker as it has better odds in conference games. Packers beat ravens

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers' passing attack keep going against the Baltimore Ravens. (Author: Gardener)

Aaron Rodgers- The Green Bay Packers escaped Baltimore with a 31:30 victory over the Ravens on Sunday. Ultimately, 2020 MVP Aaron Rodgers made more plays than the man who replaced 2019 MVP Tyler Huntley. Aaron Rodgers continued his climb into the late season. He was 23 of 31 passing for 268 yards and three touchdowns, good for a 132.2 passer rating. He's trained twice in the last four weeks, throwing 13 touchdown passes vs. He was really good, but not great; he missed Davante Adams early with a deep shot and Allen Lazard late, which should have been the final blow. Adams had six team receptions, but it was a team effort because the Ravens were out to limit the damage he could do to their decimated secondary. So Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught five passes for 98 yards, and the tight end Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis combined seven receptions for 78 yards. That's two weeks in a row great productions from the tight ends. Adams, Valdes-Scantling, and Jones had touchdown receptions; Adams has scored five points in the last four games. It's easy to focus on the player throwing the soccer ball, but 55 percent of the yards came after the catch and Deguara had the only drop (one from Lazard was cleared by a penalty). Watching Lewis run the ball is like watching the old school Tecmo Bowl with helpless defenders ricocheting off him. By our count, he broke four tackles. Rodgers was fired three times; one of them was a 0 yard scramble. Otherwise, the Green Bay blockers had prevailed against Baltimore's conservative defenses. The Ravens run defense is one of the best in the NFL. And apart from the absence of defensive lineman Calais Campbell, that group was in full strength. So Jones, AJ Dillon, and Lazard's 21 rushs for 85 yards were a good day at the office. Jones was the hot hand this week so he had 13 carries for 58 yards compared to seven carries for 22 yards for Dillon. He forcibly missed three tackles and had 30 yards from contact. That would be the key to the game, said coach Matt LaFleur last week, and this group has delivered. The left side of Jon Runyan and Yosh Nijman did a good job and Lewis continues to thrive in a longer season. On Jones ‘best run of the day, an 11-yarder on the opening drive of the third quarter, Nijman and Lewis opened the lane. Huntley started in Jackson's place and was great. He completed 28 of 40 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, good for a 99.5 rating. Tight End Mark Andrews was a one-man wrecking ball. He caught 10 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He had six receptions for 95 yards and both scores in the first half and three catches for 29 yards during the late rally. Most of the damage was directed against the Safety Darnell Savage, who was a day late and a dollar short, especially in the first 30 minutes. Based on PFF's best guess for coverage responsibility, Andrews caught 5-of-7 targets for 94 yards and both scores against Savage. However, Savage interrupted a third down pass early in the fourth quarter and diagnosed the two-point play to save the game. On the other hand, the Packers did an excellent job against everyone else. Star receiver Marquise Brown caught 10 of 14 passes for only 43 yards. The argument was extraordinary. For example, PFF charged Eric Stokes seven receptions, but he only gave up 35 yards. Too often he extended the plays and escaped the pocket of the outer linebackers. Of his 73 rushing yards, 51 were scrambles. On the final drive, Preston Smith stormed into the left tackle Alejandro Villanueva and gave Huntley 15 yards free passage. Green Bay entered the game after scoring the most rushing yards from quarterbacks and certainly not showing any progress against the Ravens. The Ravens rushed for 143 yards. After taking Huntley's scrambles out of the equation, there were 19 pure runs for 82 yards (4.3 average). Latavius Murray made the heavy lift 48 yards for seven carries. Otherwise the handling was good. The Packers certainly missed out on the standout Kenny Clark, but Tyler Lancaster played well over the extended season. De'Vondre Campbell had 10 tackles but had better days. The Green Bay Special Teams got off to a thrilling start when cornerback Rasul Douglas kicked off the 23rd. Later in the first quarter, Amari Rodgers's 35-yard kickoff return was negated by a penalty against linebacker Isaiah McDuffie. Duvernay later broke a couple of tackles on a kickoff return to the 37, the Packers escaped disaster by not setting up a doggie kickoff, and long snapper Steven Wirtel was responsible for delaying the game on the final punt when he didn't managed to get the ball in time. Green Bay's starting field position was the 17.8-yard line when the Ravens started five times, and each time it was just under 25. In six Packers kickoffs, Baltimore's field position was 27.0. This is a first down for every kickoff exchange. In the past two weeks, Mason Crosby has done all 12 kicks - 10 extra points and two short field goals. The difficulty level on all of these kicks was low, but this group needs to feel better after a tough series of games. A common theme was countermeasures that deviate from the script when compared to seasonal trends. So it stands to reason that it took LaFleur and Rodgers some time to figure things out. With six ball possession from the end of the first quarter to the beginning of the fourth quarter, they scored four touchdowns and one field goal. Defensively, the Packers always played a mile from the Ravens' swift receivers and couldn't keep Huntley in their pockets. But Crosby made his kicks and disasters were averted.

Two-point obsession becomes a fool's choice for John Harbaugh and the Ravens.

John Harbaugh loves to gamble on two-point conversions, but he'll keep going broke in 2021. (Author: Gardener)

John HarbaughJohn Harbaugh loves to gamble on two-point conversions, but he'll keep going broke in 2021. Last but not least, the Baltimore Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh, is a man of conviction. He's apparently also a man who believes in analytics, but not necessarily in numbers. The latter may seem like a contradiction in terms, but after opting for a two-point conversion with less than a minute of play instead of shooting a game-defining extra point against the Green Bay Packers and costing his team a chance for a shot in overtime It is not victory Sunday. Analytics doing their best to ruin the sport argue that the two-point conversion is the correct quantitative approach to winning soccer games. It's similar to basketball theory that it's better to clink three-point shots from the edge because it's a 50 percent bonus if you hit one. With 42 seconds of play, Harbaugh decided not to kick the game-determining extra point in order to complete a 14-point comeback of the fourth quarterback, and instead asked the rarely used backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who played in place of the injured Lamar Jackson, for one to make more game for the ravens than he had in him. Why do I say this when the analysts insist that it is the right game even though it came out wrong? This season, Harbaugh has made the two-point conversion eight times. The Ravens failed on six of them, which means that that bet was a loser 75 percent of the time. It was also the third game in a row that Harbaugh bet on a two-point conversion. The Ravens failed at all three. Perhaps Harbaugh has a memory problem because just two games ago, in an almost identical situation, he decided to take two points, usually 12 seconds back, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, although an extra point would almost certainly have forced extra time. His ravens also failed at that time. Nobody will ever know if these decisions will cost the Ravens a playoff spot, but they have now lost three times in a row by a total of four points and chosen a low percentage gambit three times instead of taking their chances in overtime twice. Harbaugh defended his decision by saying, “We were just trying to get the win right there. In overtime ... I think our chances of winning right there were a little higher than in overtime, maybe if you calculate it. ”He says they had a 75 percent chance in overtime against both that Steelers as well as losing to the Packers? "I felt good about it," Harbaugh insisted. “I thought we had a good game. It was actually not a good game on Sunday. It was a poorly designed rollout to the right that left Huntley on target with just one receiver and everyone in the stadium knew it was a tight Mark Andrews. As soon as Huntley started rolling on Andrews' side, the safety in the center of the field would light up in his direction, essentially creating a double team that brought the game to fail. Good game? Good game? It's easier to justify than defending that call to play, resulting in a tipped ball and harmless imperfections that made the Ravens 31-30 losers. Still, Harbaugh stayed like too many coaches - he made 75 percent of the right decision this season, even if it was the wrong one. "It's mostly a gut instinct," said Harbaugh when asked about his apparent acceptance of the analytics. The numbers will never be perfect. Most likely, the main decision was that he didn't want to risk Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with only 42 seconds left on the ball, only one field goal to win. But after his team had fought their way back to (almost) level after being 14 behind in the fourth quarter, didn't they deserve the right to a chance of victory of more than 25 percent? By this point, Huntley had thrown for two touchdowns, run for two touchdowns, and matched pass for pass with Rodgers for most of the game. That afternoon he was good enough to play the game in 42 seconds. Well, you almost tie the game with 42 seconds to play. Harbaugh's players stood behind his decision, despite the fact that the last three games have been expensive. They said to one man that Harbaugh was playing to win, and they respected that. But wouldn't they have played to win if they had got overtime? In the end, their audacity made the Ravens and Harbaugh the first team in NFL history to get two two-point conversions in multiple games, followed by a single point in the fourth quarter. Because all of these other coaches didn't need a nerdy number-cracker from M. I.T. Telling you a 75 percent chance of failure is not a good chance.

Game design, not analytics, the Ravens' doomed two-point attempt against Packers

Analytics didn't stop the Ravens from beating the Packers on Sunday night. A flawed game design set Tyler Huntley to fail outside of the numbers. (Author: Gardener)

RavensYou've no doubt heard more about analytics in the NFL in the past week than you would like. After the Chargers' head coach Brandon Staley tried to convert fourth place to fourth last Thursday by converting two out of five attempts into a 34-28 overtime loss to the Chiefs, everyone was on either side of the Arguments loaded for the bear. Either the old school football cavemen didn't understand the analytical argument for fourth place, or new school nerds weren't familiar with the reality of the game. And on Sunday night against the Packers, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh wanted to prolong the debate by deciding to attempt a two-point conversion with backup quarterback Tyler Huntley. Baltimore were 31-30, 42 seconds behind, after scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the final five minutes of the game. They could have scored the extra point and gone into overtime, or they could have tried to win it right there. Huntley rolled to the right, trying to hit Mark Andrews at the end of the end zone, and the Packers prevailed. It was the second time in three games that Harbaugh tried a two-point late try, and it was the second time his team failed to convert. That resulted in losses for the Packers and the Steelers last night in a 20-19 heartbreaker in week 13. Harbaugh did not apologize afterwards. "Yeah, we were just trying to get the win right there," said Harbaugh of trying to steal the win from the Packers in regulation instead of giving Aaron Rodgers one more chance. “In extra time ... I think our chances of winning right there were a bit higher than in extra time, if you calculate it. I thought we had a good game. Again they made a really good game. Harbaugh was not wrong in the decision per se. The problem was the failed play call. Huntley completed 28 of 40 passes for 215 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, added 13 rushing attempts for 73 yards and two more touchdowns. And by an overwhelming majority, Huntley's best games came when he could stay in the pocket to scan the entire field, look at all of the defense, and play games from there. This applied to Huntley's two touchdown passes to Andrews. This also applied to Huntley in the two touchdown runs, which brought his team back into the game after falling 31:17 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. If you have a backup quarterback who can read the entire field, you'll want to take advantage of this. Huntley had already proven he could. But by rolling Hunley to the right in the crucial game, Huntley's coaches essentially narrowed his options down to Andrews and nothing else. "If I were on that sideline, absolutely," said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur after the two-point call game. As the coaching staff, we expected that if they scored a goal they would go in pairs. I thought for a second as they took the time off, that they were trying to burn our last time off so we wouldn't have time off if they kicked it. I thought they could run their PAT unit on the field, but they didn't. I think Savage caught a piece of that ball in that corner of the end zone and made a great game. ”Savage did, but Huntley's limited vision helped him. In the game, Andrews was broadly positioned as the first option for Huntley. There were no other targets on Huntley's front as he rolled to the right. With Huntley rolling to the right, it was Andrews or Broke, and the Packers could top up their cover accordingly. On the back of the game, Huntley would have had two more options if receiver Marquise Brown were way out in the slot and Rashod Bateman. Brown freed himself from Adrian Amos by making a sharp first cut on his intersection route, but Huntley never saw him because Huntley was already physically past where he could have been. This would likely have been a successful conversion if Huntley had been in his pocket or around to see Brown. Huntley said after the game that he never got Brown off. "Yeah, he had room for a moment," said Huntley of Andrews in game design. “The defense just did a good job of going under and they played a good game right there. But yeah, they made a good game. It's a good team. ”When Huntley watches the movie, he'll no doubt wonder what could have been. Last night, the Ravens became the first team in NFL history to attempt two-point conversions in multiple games in one season when they were one point behind in the fourth quarter. They missed both chances, they have now lost three games in a row with a total of four points, and if the season ended today they would be eighth seeded in the AFC - from the outside, from a postseason perspective. That doesn't mean the Ravens were wrong - it means the decisions were unsuccessful. And if you want to dig into the reasons, this is the more revealing method rather than defending or judging analytics. Not to mention, these decisions aren't all about analysis, as Harbaugh concluded after the game. The numbers will never be perfect. The numbers are part of it, but the numbers aren't the main decision. ”The main mistake in making that decision was the game design, and Harbaugh and his team just have to live with that.

Ravens lose another risk, but don't expect Coach John Harbaugh to stop throwing the dice

At this point in the season, there is no reason to be upset about the decisions made by Ravens manager John Harbaugh. In two of the last three games, he attempted a green 2-point conversion in the last minute and lost. When the fans left ... (Author: Gardener)

RavensThe ball, destined for Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, hits the turf as the Ravens double against the Green Bay Packers against the Green Bay Packers at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Sunday, December 19, 2021 -Point conversion took place. At this point in the season, there is no reason to be upset about the decisions made by Ravens manager John Harbaugh. In two of the last three games, he attempted a green 2-point conversion in the last minute and lost. The Ravens fell against the Green Bay Packers, 31-30 on Sunday, after quarterback Tyler Huntley's pass to tight end Mark Andrews was abandoned with 42 seconds to go. When fans left M&T Bank Stadium after a third straight loss, opinions were mixed as to whether the decision for two was the right one. It's Harbaugh's team and he'll do what he wants in his crucial moments. Last year, Harbaugh said his aggressive decisions were largely based on analysis. On Sunday, he said his decisions were mostly based on his gut instinct. There's stubbornness here too because Harbaugh is like most head coaches - no one is going to tell them what to do with their team. So with this mindset, it's easier to say John is John rather than swallowing some antacids. If you resist this current trend of opting for two instead of losing the extra point, they will accuse you of being too old-fashioned. To which I reply, how about the other team beating you instead of beating themselves? If it didn't work out two weeks ago, and only twice in the Ravens' seven previous attempts this year, then what in the name of Vince Lombardi made you believe it would work on Sunday? Harbaugh can point to any evidence in his favor. Because of all the injuries, the Ravens worked with a motley crew in secondary school, and the Packers scored four touchdowns and one field goal with their eight possessions. If the Ravens had scored the extra point, one of the best quarterbacks in the game, Aaron Rodgers, would have been left with 42 seconds to go and one time out, which is certainly enough time to get into the field goal area against these secondaries. But if the Ravens were tied, they would have been in a similar position against Rodgers. Unfortunately, the Ravens failed so the only way out was to try an onside kick. You may have heard that last week in Cleveland they got their first successful one in 20 years. I liked the fact that the Ravens bounced back from 31-17 behind in the fourth quarter. I like that Huntley led them for the last 10 minutes on scoring drives at 75 and 49 yards. They held Green Bay on a 29-yard field goal after the Ravens failed at 12:01 pm on their own 29-yard line at their own 29-yard line, and they forced a three-and-out with 2 : 30 before the set Huntley's 8-yard touchdown run with 42 seconds left. After watching the Ravens lose to Pittsburgh and Green Bay, you really don't want to hear any more about the decision-making process. What is more interesting is how much time the ravens spend in practice working on 2-point conversions. Is it just another 15-20 minute section, or do they spend a lot of time developing and going through games because they want to be so aggressive? Against Green Bay, the Ravens Andrews sat as receiver to the right and let Huntley roll so the field shrank. Since Huntley is only in his sophomore year, he'd definitely toss Andrews for being programmed like that. After losing to Pittsburgh, Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman said their 2-point try was the wrong game and the Ravens needed a better one. He'll say the same thing again this week because this one didn't work either. You might imagine the ravens wanting to try another option as they haven't had much success. Harbaugh likes to throw the dice. The Ravens have done this several times in other situations and have been successful, which is why they have won two overtime games and three more games with three points or less this season. It's his team.

Five things we learned from the Ravens' 31-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers

The Ravens lost their third game in a row on Sunday, and everyone hit the wire and a crucial 2-point conversion attempt. (Author: Gardener)

RavensRaven's quarterback Tyler Huntley, center, climbs into the center for an 8-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Ravens lost their third game in a row on Sunday, and everyone hit the wire and a crucial 2-point conversion attempt. But during a 31-30 loss to the Packers that put the Ravens (8-6) in the middle of an AFC playoff fight, it wasn't all doom and gloom. Again, the post-game debate will focus on John Harbaugh's decision to score two points when Justin Tucker could have scored a game-defining extra point with 42 seconds to go. But is this the key point after the Ravens once again defeated a preferred opponent after being pounded by COVID-19 for a week on top of an injury to their key player, Lamar Jackson? After three straight losses and weekly slumps in their chances of reaching the playoffs, the Ravens are fed up with their somber, doomed performances. But it's difficult to look at them any other way, considering the injuries number now includes Jackson and a spate of COVID-19 positives who have carved their list even closer to the bone. There are so many ways to sum up the hollowed out state of this team that was # 1 in the AFC just three weeks ago. Every player on Sunday's Ravens roster - Jackson, defensive end Calais Campbell, right tackle Patrick Mekari, left guard Ben Powers, and full-back Patrick Ricard - was a starter. No player in the offensive or defensive backcourt was a planned starter when the team showed up for training camp. As if their prospects weren't bleak enough, the Ravens lost another cornerback, Tavon Young, to a concussion in the second quarter. A Hall of Fame quarterback from the inner circle, Aaron Rodgers played against this collection of underdogs as efficiently as you'd expect. He made 23 of 31 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns with no turnover - usually by his standards, exceptionally by those of most quarterbacks. They moved the ball efficiently with Tyler Huntley as quarterback and headed for halftime with the best of the NFC. They kept coming back and cobbling together an 11-play touchdown drive after Rodgers built a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. The Ravens eventually made a defensive stand, punctuated by a sophomore stuff and sack from Justin Madubuike. Huntley drove them 49 yards for another touchdown, setting up that tempting two-point attempt. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley keeps the ball to late in 4th Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley keeps the ball to late in 4th What more could you ask for from a team that would have been selected for the AFC if it were in with this starter collection Season started? Our judgments about the season of the ravens whenever it ends will involve more complex calculations. Harbaugh didn't give a quarter in explaining his decision to go for two after the game. He felt the Ravens had a better chance of winning if they took the lead right now than if they swapped possessions with Rodgers in overtime. With 42 seconds left on the clock, they may not have gotten into overtime anyway, but that's another discussion. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley is congratulated by Mark Andrews after scoring a goal in the final minutes of the game to put the score within 1 of the Green Bay Packers. A subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed and the Packers won 31-30. Harbaugh is an aggressive coach by nature and while he won't say this publicly, he understands that his team is currently operating with a talent shortage. If he sees a chance to cut off a corner for a win that would give the Ravens' playoff chances a significant boost, he'll take it. Baltimore Ravens manager John Harbaugh watches his offense come off the field after a failed fourth quarter two-point conversion that could have won the game. The Ravens lost to the Packers 31-30. "For me that gave us the best chance of winning in both cases," he said of his two 2-point calls from the last three games. The ball, destined for Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, hits the turf as the Ravens beat the Green Bay Packers at the end of the fourth. The Packers won 31-30. The Ravens stay in these games in part because they're animated by Harbaugh's relentless urge to get the most out of every moment. But the game the Ravens were calling didn't work and didn't come as close as the one offensive coordinator Greg Roman called in Pittsburgh two weeks earlier. Huntley rolled to his right, targeting Andrews, and positioned himself against cornerback Eric Stokes just inside the nearby pylon. Huntley saw its narrow end open for a moment, but his movement drew Darnell Savage to safety toward Andrews, and Savage deflected the pass. Marquise Brown appeared to be open at the back of the end zone, but Harbaugh and Huntley indicated that Andrews was always the target. Ravens's Tyler Huntley throws a touchdown pass to tight-end Mark Andrews against the Packers in the first quarter. "He made a good decision," said Harbaugh. "He had a chance to get Mark and I think security is out there and has a finger on it." Baltimore Ravens' Mark Andrews gives a reception in the end zone for a Q2 touchdown against the Green Bay Packers at M&T Bank Stadium. Perhaps this was too obvious a game for the situation, and deprived Huntley of the ability to seek another goal or move it within himself. The Ravens have made two 2-point conversions in eight attempts this season, one of the worst rates in the league. "I told the coach that I wouldn't have it any other way," said Andrews. Tyus Bowser and Justin Houston (# 50) from Ravens sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the second quarter. The Ravens drove 75 yards in 14 games to start the game and were on the verge of scoring a touchdown in the first quarter for the first time since Week 6. Huntley fell back three times in a row looking for an open receiver in the end zone. Three times in a row he couldn't find the right connection. Tyler Huntley of Ravens, right, runs away from Krys Barnes of Packers in the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium. It was the kind of disappointing sequence that could have shaken a quarterback on his second NFL start against the NFC's best team. He didn't do it as a high school star trading Jackson touchdowns in the South Florida fields. The next time he got the ball, he made four straight passes, the last of which to a diving Andrews in the end zone. He was even better on the drive after that, leading the Ravens 73 yards in 11 games and finding Andrews in traffic for a 9-yard touchdown. The offensive looked better than it had in six weeks. Huntley doesn't have Jackson's bewitching talent as a scrambler, but he brought an agreeable simplicity to the operation by doing quick reading and accurate throwing. Despite attempting only two passes over 20 yards in the game, the Ravens converted seven of 13 third downs and scored a goal on five of eight possession of the ball. Particularly noteworthy was Huntley's refusal to despair when the Ravens fell behind with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Instead, he immediately went back to crack the Green Bay defense 3, 5, and 6 yards at a time, and galloped into the open ground (73 yards at 13 carries) when he couldn't find a receiver. Ravens 'Tyler Huntley is fired from Packers' De'Vondre Campbell in the first quarter. "I thought today he took another step forward, just in terms of himself, on time with the rhythm, taking off and running at the right time, accurate throws, all of those things," said Harbaugh. This isn't an argument to start Huntley over Jackson when Jackson is ready to leave Cincinnati the day after Christmas. That would be a fundamental decision that would affect the most important Raven since Ray Lewis. But we came into this season with the assumption that the Ravens all had to be Lamar, all of the time, to stand a chance. The big football world has learned what the Ravens did in training camp: This guy can play. The 6-foot-5, 256-pound Andrews has to stack several Pro Bowl seasons before we can talk about him in the same breath, but he is finishing his fourth season in flying colors. A week after catching 11 passes on 11 targets in Cleveland, Andrews jumped, sprinted, and pounded 10 catches on 13 targets for 136 yards and two touchdowns against the Packers. Andrews was the dominant pass catcher on the field in a game played by Davante Adams. Shannon Sharpe and Todd Heap made Pro Bowls the tight end for the Ravens, but Andrews has accumulated more receptions, yards and touchdowns in 14 games than any of them in a single season in Baltimore. And lest we forget, he's no longer the finesse gamer he was projected to be from Oklahoma. According to Pro Football Focus, he has the fourth best run-blocking grade of all tight ends. One of the real joys in sport is watching a great player show off. This is that time for Andrews. The Ravens could have increased their playoff odds significantly with the Packers upset, but this was still not a must-have for them. Earlier this weekend, Pro Football Focus told Focus that they have an 86% chance of getting in with a win and a 55% chance of losing. When it became clear that they were unlikely to have Jackson quarterback and that COVID-19 would leave them a second game in the final preseason game, they had to realize that the Packers game was not a stage for life. or death status. But they knew in some ways that their fate would be decided, not by the Packers, but by two remaining division games - Sunday in Cincinnati and January 9 at home against the Steelers. The ravens are not favored over the Bengals they hammered in Baltimore. And the week 18 final, likely Ben Roethlisberger's last game in the regular season, could be emotionally volatile. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback is defeated by De'Vondre Campbell of Green Bay Packers in the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback is defeated by De'Vondre Campbell of Green Bay Packers in the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback is defeated by De'Vondre Campbell of Green Bay Packers in the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium. But the Ravens will at least hope to build a healthier team and take their chances against an AFC North that turned out to be more mediocre than either of us predicted in September. After the game, Andrews said his thoughts were on the Bengals, who beat the Denver Broncos 8-6, to join the Ravens. So if we can win this, it will look good. "

Ravens from outside, looking in, but the decisive matchup against Bengals in week 16 is imminent

If the regular season had ended after week 12, the Ravens would have been the top seeds of the conference. RavensTo get an idea of how quickly playoff fortunes can change in the AFC, consider the Ravens' last three weeks. If the regular season had ended after week 12, the Ravens would have been the top seeds of the conference. Now, after three straight losses, most recently a 31-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, they wouldn't even make it into the NFL's expanded seven-team playoff field when the season ends on Tuesday. And yet, according to the predictions of FiveThirtyEight, they remain favored not only to reach the playoffs, but also to win the AFC North. A lot can and will change in the last three weeks of the regular season. This Ravens season was nothing but unpredictable. With a crucial and possibly departmental matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, take a closer look at where the Ravens are in the AFC playoff picture. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley keeps the ball to late in 4th Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley keeps the ball to late in 4th Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley is congratulated by Mark Andrews after scoring a goal in the final minutes of the game to get the score within 1 of the Green Bay Packers. After a dramatic win on Thursday evening, they also have two games ahead of the Los Angeles Chargers. A favorable end-of-season schedule gives Kansas City a good chance of scooping a round one bye and home advantage in the postseason. The Packers defeated the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium by 31-30. Tyus Bowser and Justin Houston (# 50) from Ravens sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the second quarter. Raven's tight end Mark Andrews is being bailed out after missing the reception on a two-point conversion attempt against the Green Bay Packers in the late 4th quarter. The Packers won 31-30. Remaining Schedule: At Cardinals vs. Since their breakdown in Week 5 in Baltimore, the Colts have won seven out of nine games and positioned themselves well for a top five seed. If Indianapolis can get past a struggling Arizona Cardinals team, it should start the postseason with a five-game winning streak. Could that be enough to skip the Titans in AFC South? Remaining schedule: at Texans vs. The Chargers, a win on Thursday against the Chiefs they defeated in their first matchup could have taken control of AFC West. Now they may have to hold their own in a crowded wildcard field where a previous loss to the Ravens and a win over the Bengals could be decisive. The chargers' schedule is manageable, but this week's coronavirus outbreak isn't going to help. Remaining schedule: Patriots vs. The Bills stuck in seventh place thanks to a 5-5 conference record, half a game worse than the Chargers' 5-4 mark. Buffalo should be preferred to make the playoffs despite yet another loss to New England, but a win would put them in control of the AFC East. Remaining schedule: in Chiefs vs. Browns at Ravens Justin Madubuike, center, dismisses Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he battles Royce Newman, left, in the fourth quarter. Somehow the Steelers are still hanging around looking for a way into the playoffs. Next up: the top team at the AFC, a Cleveland offensive that can span Pittsburgh's seedy run defense, and a potentially equally desperate Ravens team playing in Baltimore. Remaining schedule: Saints, Titans vs. The Dolphins have won six games in a row since the start of the 1-7 season. But a title in the AFC East Division is unlikely and the playoff odds are not great for a 7-7 team. Remaining schedule: at Packers, at Steelers, vs. If the regular season had ended after week 12, Baltimore would have been the top seed of the AFC. This is followed by wide receiver Marquise Brown (right) and the Ravens Eli Apple (left) and the Bengals in the AFC North. Remaining schedule: Raiders, Chargers vs. The Broncos have the worst playoff odds of any AFC team that haven't been eliminated.
