Lakers heavily considering bench role for Russell Westbrook -

The Los Angeles Lakers are still busy figuring out a role for Russell Westbrook, and a bank role could be in the cards. (Author: Gardener)

Russell Westbrook -Russell Westbrook is once again the center of the Lakers news. Even amid Los Angeles bringing back Dennis Schroder, the former MVP is still a question mark over what role he will play in the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how he and newly acquired Patrick Beverley coexist. However, things get more interesting when another Guardian is added to the mix. New Lakers head coach Darvin Ham recently said he's ready to make any tough rotation decisions that lie ahead to put Los Angeles back on top. An interesting quote considering recent reports also states that the organization is heavily considering a bankroll for the nine-time All-Star. He finished the season with 18.5 points, 3.8 turnovers, 7.1 assists and 7.4 total rebounds per game. Russell Westbrook too often seemed sloppy and careless with the ball in clutch situations. He, LeBron James and Anthony Davis were never quite a good match last season. Despite another stellar statistical season from LeBron, the Los Angeles Lakers missed the playoffs entirely. Having the ball-dominated guard Westbrook with two other superstars in the starting eleven was not the recipe for success for these new "Big Three". However, having Westbrook off the bench as an energizer and running his own unit could be a solution for this revamped Los Angeles team. The Lakers wasted no time shaking things up when it comes to their player staff this offseason. Last season they were just too old as they were outperformed by the younger teams. The team chose not to bring back players like Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo. As a result, the Lakers traded for Patrick Beverley, who will give them much-needed full-back. Whether this revamped roster will be an improvement remains to be seen, but if Westbrook comes off the bench with this new roster, he could potentially recapture some of the Oklahoma City Thunder spark he once possessed. Although the Lakers are younger now, they also have some inexperienced players in their roster. Not to mention whether Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverley can coexist given their background remains to be seen. In a perfect world, the Lakers would relegate Westbrook to the second unit. This would allow LeBron and AD's two-man game to flourish again and potentially put the Lakers back in the playoffs. In reality, this will most likely create more tension in the dressing room and Los Angeles will still face an uphill battle in the year to come.

Logan Paul accepts Triple H's SmackDown invite as the Roman Reigns controversy heats up

Roman ReignsWe covered the challenge Logan gave Paul to Roman Reigns earlier this week to meet him one-on-one in the ring - and now it looks like this whole situation will be addressed head-on on tonight's SmackDown! Everything leading up to today has unfolded on Twitter over the past few days, so let's rewind for a moment and see how we got to his point. Sure, Roman Reigns snapped a few playful shots of Logan Paul during his time on the show, but the interview was primarily Reigns revealing the human side of him for the world to see. It was a fresh, candid look at the larger-than-life superstar that won over many fans who may never have seen Reigns so candidly before. It wasn't until Reigns left the studio that Paul decided enough was enough; it seems he was fed up with the admiration his IMPAULSIVE co-hosts were throwing at the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. In one shocking moment, he threw off the challenge while looking directly at the camera, before his podcast feed was abruptly cut short: "You put me against Roman Reigns, I think I'd win. Me vs Roman Reigns. It was a moment that threw the WWE Universe upside down. Not only is Logan Paul a newcomer to the scene, Roman Reigns is already embroiled in feuds with multiple TV superstars, pulling the champion in multiple directions. Simple logic would lead you to believe that Reigns would be a little overwhelmed for a challenge like this, but that didn't happen. After all, Reigns has reached the pinnacle of WWE by never flinching from anyone to snap his mouth: it seems it wasn't the challenge itself that prodded the bear. It was the fact that the challenge wasn't said to Reign's face, but it was said as soon as he left the studio. It was only appropriate that Reigns instructed Paul Heyman to "handle" the situation since his attorney has made a career out of it: At this point, one might think that Logan Paul had begun to back down from his provocative remarks about Reigns. After all, for a superstar like Paul, it's all about the attention — more controversy and more people talking means more people tuning in to his podcast. But in a somewhat surprising turn of events, Logan Paul stood his ground and responded directly to Paul Heyman himself on Twitter: That's why he made it easy for Logan Paul. Taking advantage of his own unique position of power in WWE, Triple H gave him an open invitation to gamble by inviting him to appear on tonight's episode of SmackDown! Spoiler alert: Within an hour, Logan Paul promptly accepted the invitation, tweeting a simple "say less" in response. And now, today's SmackDown gets infinitely more interesting: Logan Paul will be in the building, as will Roman Reigns. Logan Paul can take back his challenge, apologize to Roman Reigns and continue his still burgeoning WWE career without having to cross paths with the man who has held and ranked the Universal Title for over two years. He didn't invite Logan Paul to appear on SmackDown tonight so Paul could stick his cock between his legs and take his challenge back. So here's what we can all look forward to: Logan Paul will in all likelihood continue to speak out tonight. Like him or not, one of the most polarizing people in the entire world of entertainment is set to have a moment with Roman Reigns and the Bloodline tonight. That's enough to tune in there. As for tonight, a few questions remain: How will Roman Reigns react? Will Reigns remain silent on the matter, or will he personally acknowledge the challenge Logan made to Paul? Or will he just lay Logan Paul down? Check out the latest exploits from Roman Reigns and Logan Paul and learn about the entire WWE Universe at Peacock.

Real Madrid have agreed on a free transfer for Skriniar

Real Madrid plan to beat PSG, Chelsea and Tottenham by signing Inter defender Milan Skriniar. Transfer Talk has the latest. (Author: Gardener)

Real MadridThe summer transfer window is closed for the big leagues in Europe. Transfer Talk brings you the latest in rumours, rumours, comings, goings and of course deals done! According to Football Insider, Real Madrid plan to beat Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar. Skriniar, 27, has a contract that expires in 2023 and his future at Inter remains in doubt as he is yet to sign a new contract. The Italy side had previously rejected offers of up to €70m for the Slovakia international but could lose him on a free transfer next summer. While PSG have led the chase, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is a big fan of the defender after two years together at the San Siro and could make a move in January. After Real Madrid managed to land Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer from Chelsea last month, Real Madrid are planning a similar move for the sought-after Skriniar. 13.28 BST: US defender Sergino Dest has said his move to Serie A giants AC Milan will help him become a "more complete" defender. Dest, who will represent the USMNT at the 2022 World Cup, joined Milan from Barcelona on September 1 for a season with an option to make the deal permanent next summer for €20m. The 21-year-old came off the bench in Milan's first two Champions League games this season but is yet to play in Serie A. "I think this league will help me to become more complete," he said at a press conference on Friday. Dest, who has also been subject to interest from Manchester United and Villarreal, left Barca for lack of first-team football ahead of the World Cup in Qatar which starts on November 20. 11:04 a.m. CET: Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg insists FC Bayern Munich wants to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Kane, 29, almost left Spurs for Manchester City last year but his £150million valuation has prevented any deal. However, the England captain has just two years left on his contract and is looking to win trophies, so Bayern may see a chance to sign him this summer when they try to find a replacement for Robert Lewandowski. "I am convinced that Kane will be Bayern Munich's real market target next summer," he told Sky Sport Italia. "It will depend on the player's performance this season, but Bayern have the money. 8/10 BST: Gianluca Di Marzio says Inter Milan are unlikely to sign Romelu Lukaku permanently from Chelsea next summer. Lukaku, 28, returned last month Loan back to Inter just a year after joining Chelsea for €115m, the Belgium international has scored one goal from three games as he has struggled with injuries so far this season, but because Inter already have €8m for Having paid off the loan, that fee rises to 10million if they wanted to extend the loan next year, Di Marzio suggests a permanent deal is not a certainty as his contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2026. 09.24 BST: Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid are already interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham but now Chelsea are also in the running, The Sun says. Bellingham, 19, is one of the best young midfielders in the world and would cost around €120m to sign him for Manchester City's performance by Jack Grealish rmances and has told the England midfielder to ignore the noise surrounding his start to the season. Grealish, who left for 100m in 2021, Guardiola's side eventually fought back, winning 2-1, but the City boss insists Grealish is doing more than enough, reminding the 27-year-old to shut out the critics. "I have no doubts about him at all," Guardiola said at a press conference on Friday. "I know him and I am beyond happy and delighted with what he is doing. I don't know [if he listens to criticism]. I don't talk about it when they listen to all the comments or the radio. Roma are pushing for Nicolo Zaniolo to sign a new contract amid fears Juventus and Tottenham will knock again for the midfielder, according to Calciomercato.Zaniolo, 23, who has scored eight goals and provided nine assists in 42 games in all competitions, says Giallorossi had previously stated last season that he was in no rush to sign a contract extension as his current deal expires in 2024. However, sporting director Tiago Pinto is keen for the Italy international to finalize his long-term future at the Stadio Olimpico in a bid to deter their Serie A rivals with a new deal reportedly set to last until 2027. The left-back is expected to renew Hi's contract for a further year at the end of the season. Despite an impressive pre-season performance from 18-year-old Alejandro Balde, who was later rewarded with four straight LaLiga starts ahead of captain Jordi Alba, Alonso has now taken the first choice at left-back and made his Champions League debut against Bayern Munich. AC Milan and Fiorentina are leading interest in signing young FC Midtjylland winger Gustav Isaksen, reports Sky Sport Italia. The two Italian sides let scouts watch as the 21-year-old scored in a convincing 5-1 Europa League win over Lazio. Midtjylland reportedly turned down an offer from a Premier League team in the summer but the Denmark Under-21 international is reportedly favoring a move to Italy. Leeds United are set to return for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo in January, write Eindhoven's Dagblad. It is reported that the two sides could reach an agreement for the 23-year-old in the winter transfer window as it is believed £43million would be enough to secure his exit from Philips Stadium. The Netherlands international has made an impressive start to the Eredivisie this season with seven goals and three assists in six appearances.

September 16thLogan Paul returned to WWE television on Friday night's SmackDown after there was an online confrontation with Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman that resulted in an invite to the Fox show. What did the social media superstar have to say as he stepped into the square circle as part of this week's show? Find out now with this recap of an episode that also crowned new No. 1 contenders for the Usos' tag team titles and saw Raquel Rodriguez seek revenge on Bayley in one-on-one action. Fatal 4-Way No. 1 Contender's Match: New Day vs. Imperium Logan Paul opened the show on Friday, building on the controversial back-and-forth he's had with undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman on social media. He teased a press conference for Las Vegas on Saturday before Heyman and The Bloodline were interrupted, without The Head of the Table. The social media star asked what happens when he lands that one magic punch that knocks out The Tribal Chief. Sami Zayn got involved, talking down The Bloodline and eating a right hand that flattened him. Paul withdrew, Ricochet came on for the night's opener, and the show went into commercial break. This was a good way to start the show, but if WWE thinks for a second, it will somehow convince the audience to cheer on Paul about Reigns, the reaction, the former should serve as rebuttal here. Even to the top heel faction in the company, he was the least likeable guy on screen. His work between the ropes has been admirable and his promos are better than some veteran performers can muster, but his reputation in popular culture precedes him and audiences want nothing to do with supporting him. Until Reigns rocks him with the first Superman punch, the audience will erupt, and that's almost certainly not the desired effect based on what we've seen here. B-If only because Heyman is back and Zayn is a darling. "Logan Paul has some balls," Michael Cole continued to comment before enumerating what led to his appearance tonight , I don't care about your athletic background, I don't care that you and your brother changed the fighting game. The pop from Sami Zayn, who chimed in in the promo, was great and reflected how deeply audiences connect with his character. "Maybe Roman R Strangers should have left me to Logan Paul," Zayn said. Paul stayed at ringside and backed Ricochet as he fought Zayn, who was backed by The Bloodline at ringside. So he had a front row seat for a fairly one-sided fight in the first half as Zayn controlled the in and out of the commercial break. Despite a late comeback, Zayn defeated him with a Blue Thunder Bomb for what should have been the win, but Paul distracted official Jessika Carr and allowed the former Intercontinental Champion to throw. Further interference from everyone involved dominated the game's closing moments, leading to fights between Zayn and Jey Uso before Ricochet obliterated both ringside, finishing the former with a Shooting Star Press for the win. Not only was this a highly competitive match, but there was some great storytelling leading up to a hell of a fight between the two, one that's red hot and dividing audiences between them. That being said, using Ricochet as the only true babyface here and then giving him a win was a nice touch. As always, he delivered and the result was a strong match. Jey and Zayn feuded ringside, continuing to escalate their rivalry and setting up a great finish. Madcap Moss rushed into the ring to stand alongside Paul and Ricochet while building interest later in his NXT North American Championship match against Solo Sikoa on the entry ramp and then obliterating the latter with a powerbomb in the ring. Alpha Academy's Chad Gable and Otis attempted a setup and managed to knock Strowman off his feet, but The Monster Among Monsters sat up and glared at the team to close the ring segment. Strowman continues to look like a dominant here Power out as Triple H and WWE Creative attempt to rehabilitate his character during this comeback. It's the right decision, and Gable and Otis, both pros, are the right choices to help him make it happen. If there's one thing that's abundantly clear, it's that the Maximum Male Models may be reaching the end of their usefulness on SmackDown, having already resorted to dummies for the unstoppable big man. Before the segment, Karrion Kross clipped another ominous promo aimed at Drew McIntyre as the two clearly gear up for a one-on-one showdown. Bayley, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky continued to ride a wave of momentum, the latter two still celebrating their Monday Raw Women's Tag Team Championship. One of the women they defeated, Raquel Rodriguez, sought revenge as she fought Bayley one on one. The wrestling-experienced Bayley worked her opponent's left leg to knock down her taller opponent. It worked until Rodriguez adjusted and changed her offense to take pressure off her injured limb. A distraction by Kai and Sky allowed Bayley to secure the tainted win Rodriguez was booked heavily here once again and looked like a star in the making as she fended off Damage Ctrl until the numbers game proved to be too much for her to handle to overcome it. She's becoming a star in the women's division, but she desperately needs to develop a character so fans can better understand why they should care about her, besides being tall and physically impressive between the ropes. Shotzi's move erases what was an unfortunate, undefined heel turn. Positioning her against Damage Ctrl will only help her get there. Bayley, who responded to an intense lockup with an offensive slap just moments into the match, was a great piece of heel work. Shotzi's run-in at the end was a welcome surprise, and one that should bring her back into a role that she'll no doubt be more comfortable in and find greater success in. Backstage, Liv Morgan interrupted an interview with Ronda Rousey to challenge her to an Extreme Rules match for the SmackDown Women's Championship. Rowdy accepted. For the first time in his career, Madcap Moss got his chance at a singles championship when he challenged new NXT North American Champion Solo Sikoa, accompanied not by The Usos ("You were screwed Jey") but by Sami Zayn. Sikoa dominated the match, overpowering and outclassing the challenger for his majority. Despite a late attack from the challenger, Sikoa put him down with a Uranage after Zayn led a pursuing Moss right into his reach, successfully defending his title. The match was surprisingly long, but it was solid play for Sikoa. He looked dominant and probably could have won the match outright, but Zayn's involvement further fuels the idea that the Bloodline benefits from his presence, perhaps even more than Jey Uso's. Moss made the best of his minutes, as usual, although he seems to have lost a bit of steam under Triple H. Drew McIntyre jumped onto the announce table and responded to Karrion Kross. Backstage, Sikoa rejected the Usos who accompanied him ringside for his title match. to claim Jey is out of his game and was formerly wrong. By choosing Zayn, he only added to the division that currently exists within the faction. Michael Cole drew attention to the "dreaded reputation of Samoans throughout history". Wrestling history in general has not been mentioned regularly under Vince McMahon. A date with the Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship awaited the winner of the Fatal 4-Way No. 1 Contender's Match on Friday. The field featured Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods from The New Day, Butch and Ridge Holland from The Brawling Brute, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci from Imperium, and Top Dolla and Ashante Thee Adonis from Hit Row. As is the case with so many stars in a game at once, the action broke down significantly over time, with dramatic near falls caused by late saves and expertly timed kickouts. Late it looked like Kaiser and Vinci would win the Empire Bomb, but an undiscovered tag from Holland allowed the former rugby player to steal the pinfall win and set The Brawling Brutes up for a title match against The Usos next week. The match was a great display of the four teams involved, with some clever spots mixed in for good measure. It would have meant more if there had been a sense that Jimmy and Jey Uso were in danger of losing their titles, but that doesn't erase the action, reversals, counterattacks and sequences that helped make this a quality main event make .Expect Imperium's presence to be felt in next week's title match. Brawling Brutes defeated Imperium, New Day and Hit Row to become No. 1. Kingston recalled the problems New Day had with the Brawling Brutes , and tagged Holland with a shot from the match to midsection was one of those great little things that ring veterans understand the importance of. Watching Holland fight like a de facto babyface still takes some getting used to. Butch exploded late in the match and wiped out all his opponents The crowd came alive. Top Dolla marched around the square circle while holding both members of New Day and Butch on his shoulders in an impressive show of strength. Kingston jumped into the ring out of nowhere, splashing Adonis and nearly scoring the fall before Butch finished it.

FridayThe Bay Area is home to two of the three most powerful politicians in the country, Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. So why can't she find enough people to run for her councillors? At least five Bay Area cities canceled all or part of city council elections this year due to a lack of candidates, opting to nominate the only people running. Danville, Lafayette, Hillsborough, Mill Valley and Cotati canceled all of their local council elections. Local election officials say the move from general elections (where most voters win, regardless of address) to district elections (where an individual represents selected neighborhoods based on geography or interests) is the leading cause of election cancellations. City council districts used to be for larger cities like San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland. The landscape began to change after the California Voting Rights Act of 2001 was passed. The city of Berkeley's pedestrian safety operation received 23 subpoenas this week for a variety of violations from motorists driving through the city, according to a Berkeley police spokesman. The pedestrian safety operation, which took place on Tuesday, issued subpoenas to 27 drivers for violations including failure to yield to pedestrians, seat belt violations, drivers driving without a license, failure to use hands-free cell phones and not following traffic signs. The operation took place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Way at the Addison Street intersection. Tuesday. Funding for this program was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This operation is one of several planned at Berkeley for Pedestrian Safety Month. A pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the El Camino Real and Sunnyvale Avenue area. A spokesman for the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said Thursday that the collision, which occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday remains under investigation. Police officers and firefighters responded to the collision and found the seriously injured pedestrian at the scene of the accident. The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. A nonprofit provider of comprehensive mental health services in Marin County needs volunteers to help answer calls to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline. Buckelew Programs in Novato operates one of 13 California call centers on the national 988 network, which went live in mid-July. Like other call centers across the country, Buckelev is seeing an increase in new callers during the introduction of the new, easy-to-remember 988 area code. After the pandemic and events of social injustice in the country, Buckelev believes more people will call 988 when experiencing delayed trauma responses. 988 volunteers receive free and comprehensive 40 hours of training, acquiring a wide range of skills to support individuals and families in their greatest moments of need. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and commit to at least one four-hour shift per week for a year. Learn more and apply at A Santa Rosa man was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for a brutal knife attack that disfigured his roommate, according to Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch. Justin Takacs, 39, has been charged with mayhem after assaulting his roommate during a methamphetamine binge in March 2020, prosecutors said. Police arrived at the 200 block of Hazel Street after receiving a call from a man who said his roommate had attacked him and that he defended himself with a knife. However, when police arrived, they found that caller Takacs had no injuries, but that his roommate had been slashed and stabbed. Takacs was found to have attacked his roommate with a knife and then left the apartment. According to prosecutors, Takacs was convinced his roommate had arranged his eviction and he slapped his face, leaving extensive injuries including deep lacerations to his scalp, ears, cheeks, lips, mouth, shoulder and abdomen. During the sentencing hearing, the court noted the "extraordinarily high amount of blood" at the crime scene and the severity of the victim's injuries. At least four people, including a child, were taken to area hospitals after a car crashed through a Trader Joe's store in the unincorporated Castro Valley Thursday afternoon, California Highway Patrol officials said. Authorities do not believe the driver drove into the store intentionally, nor do they believe drugs or alcohol played a role, CHP official Dan Jacowitz said. The driver was an elderly person who stood in the parking lot and sped to the front of the store, where cashiers were attending to customers, Kelly and Jacowitz said. All injuries were minor or moderate, Jacowitz said. The driver is cooperating with the authorities, said Jacowitz. Further efforts to curb air pollution in East Oakland will begin Thursday night with the start of the East Oakland Community Emissions Reduction Plan process. It begins with a steering committee meeting at 6 p.m. at The meeting is hosted in part by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in partnership with Communities for a Better Environment and residents of East Oakland. The committee will meet monthly to develop an emissions reduction plan that will follow the then-governor's plan. Jerry Brown's signature on Assembly Bill 617 in 2017. "Community leaders in East Oakland have been calling for action to improve local air quality in their community for decades," according to a memo from Air District executive officer Jack Broadbent. "They have been working for years to build community capacity in air quality planning." AB 617 calls for neighborhood air surveillance and plans to reduce emissions from mobile and stationary sources. AB 617 led the California Air Resources Board to establish the Community Air Protection Program, which aims to curb exposure to air pollutants in communities hardest hit by pollution. East Oakland suffers from truck, highway and industrial pollution, according to the Air District. The recommended area for reduction is from the High Street to the San Leandro boundary and below Interstate Highway 580. However, the Project Board will determine the final boundaries. It's also an area with many homes and schools, said Suma Peesapati, environmental justice and community engagement officer for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. But the air district officials already know it's high. The National Weather Service forecast for the San Francisco Bay Area for the last Friday of summer calls for a cool day with highs in the 60s along the coast to the high 60s and mid 70s around the bay and in the high 70s to the low 80s inland ago. Cracking the mysteries of seismic safety, one tremor simulation at a time

(Author: Gardener)

oneTo ensure our buildings and infrastructure are earthquake-proof, we need to understand how seismic activity affects different structures. Miniature models and historical observations are helpful, but they only scratch the surface of understanding and quantifying a geological event as powerful and wide-ranging as a large earthquake. Two major research efforts aim to fill the gaps and provide resources for researchers and engineers to study earthquakes of all magnitudes, from triggering seismic waves at the fault site deep underground to the interactions between shaking ground and individual structures on the surface. The first endeavor is an experimental facility for real-world studies of how the soil around a structure affects its performance during an earthquake. That's because soils are made up of complex layers of rock and mineral particles of different sizes with different moisture contents, each responding differently to seismic activity. During an earthquake, the movements of buildings are determined by site-specific interactions between these soil layers and the direction and strength of the vibrations. The Large-Scale Laminar Soil Box System, now nearing completion after more than five years of planning and construction, will be the largest facility in the United States to study these interactions and will be comparable in size to the largest in the world. The facility is a collaboration between the University of Nevada, Reno (University) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). It consists of a 350-ton earth tank mounted on a hydraulic base capable of mimicking a shake of up to 1.5 million pounds of force. The facility will open on September 15 with a celebratory demonstration event at the university. Studies conducted with the Soil Box System will provide data for the other effort, EQSIM: an ongoing collaboration between scientists at the Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the university to develop realistic, highly detailed earthquake simulations using the DOE's supercomputers . The Soil Box System helps us understand and refine how to model the complex interaction between the soil and a structure. Our goal is to create realistic models of specific interactions—for example, what happens to a 20-story building very close to California's Hayward Fault during a major earthquake? — and add them to our existing large-scale simulations,” said David McCallen, senior scientist in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Berkeley Lab and EQSIM leader: “We want to model all the way from fracture through soil to structure to see how buildings and other infrastructure will respond across an entire region.” The Soil Box project was created in 2015 out of a need to protect Department of Energy buildings, which contain sensitive scientific instruments, from a possible seismic scenario during an earthquake said Ian Buckle, principal investigator of the Soil Box System, Foundation Professor in the university's Department of Civil & Environmental Engine ering. The design team, led by Buckle and fellow university professors Sherif Elfass and Patrick Laplace, engineered and manufactured the system so that it has the largest possible earth container, so that representative structure doors can be placed on it. A management committee was formed to guide the team through this challenging project. The 15 foot tall and 21.5 foot wide crate sits on a 24 foot square shaking platform controlled by 16 hydraulic actuators. Capable of shifting and accelerating 350 tons of earth - and the structure upon it - in two horizontal directions at once with the same force as a powerful earthquake, the system is so powerful that the designers had to incorporate safeguards to prevent it from self-destructing during the process destroy experiments. The hydraulics are controlled by custom software and the box is fitted with a range of sensors, allowing scientists to collect detailed data sets to feed into their computer simulations. "You don't order an earth box and shaker table of this size and complexity from an online catalogue." Not only does this design allow us to work with large scale structural models that can be placed on the ground, but also at large scale we can see more realistic soil features be modeled.” Once operational, the facility will become a resource for DOE researchers focused on seismic safety, as well as scientists from academia and industry. James McConnell, Associate Principal Deputy Administrator in DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration, said, "It is important that DOE and NNSA invest in this work to ensure that the large, complicated, unique facilities that we are building are designed to that they protect the research, defense and energy production needs of the country. However, the results have the added benefit of helping engineers and architects in both industry and the private sector to build a wide range of earthquake-resistant structures.” Current models of earthquake properties are based on the app's approximations and simplifications, partly due to a lack of real-world data about the underlying physics, but also because very few computers on the planet are actually capable of running earthquake simulations with the accuracy required to conduct infrastructure damage assessments. For this reason, McCallen and his EQSIM colleagues used the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab to develop very large, detailed models -- like their simulations of the San Francisco Bay Area for M7-Hayward -Fault earthquakes - which have done 391 billion model grid points. They will also soon begin work on an even more powerful platform - the newly introduced Frontier supercomputer, also in Oak Ridge. Frontier is the first computing system to break the exascale barrier, meaning it is capable of computing at least one billion billion (aka trillion or 1018) operations per second, and is currently considered the world's most powerful supercomputer . Using these exceptionally fast machines, the team will be able to incorporate new knowledge and information about soil response and soil-structure interaction gained from the soil box experiments into their existing large-scale models. The long-standing goal of fracture-to-structure modeling is now becoming a computational reality. Their simulations are then made available to the public through the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center's open-access simulation database. PEER is a multi-institutional research center focused on performance-based earthquake engineering and led by UC Berkeley. "Part of our plan is to enhance the available data sets of measured earthquake motions with our very dense, very detailed simulated motions and make those motions available to the broader community of earthquake scientists and engineers," explained McCallen, who is also the director of the University of Nevada, Reno's Center for Civil Earthquake Engineering Research. “Therefore we will work with PEER, which has a long history and the necessary infrastructure to provide open access to recorded earthquake movements on the ground so that they can freely share with the entire community for the benefit of all. The Kansas City Chiefs have won six straight AFC West titles, and a win over the Los Angeles Chargers Thursday night would put them in the division's first solo spot after just two weeks of the 2022 NFL slate. Kansas City got off to a strong start this year with a 44-21 win over Arizona last week, while Los Angeles beat the Raiders in a 24-19 final. The Chargers caused a stir at Arrowhead Stadium last season, splitting their last four encounters with the Chiefs. Rookie running back Isiah Pacheco rushed 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown on his NFL debut, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire totaled 74 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs also put on a strong defensive performance, holding Arizona to just seven points in the first three quarters of the game. They face an offense from Los Angeles that was underwhelming in Week 1, rushing just 76 yards on 31 carries. Star running back Austin Ekeler averaged 2.6 yards per attempt, which isn't enough against a team like Kansas City. Kansas City has won eight of its last nine home games and covered the spread in eight of its last 11 games overall, while the Chargers have covered just four times in their last 12 competitions. Los Angeles is 3-13 in its last 16 head-to-head encounters with the Chiefs. Kansas City has suffered two home losses in each of the past two seasons, while Los Angeles has suffered one loss per season. Justin Herbert was a key player in those two wins, amassing 583 passing yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions while running for a point. The 24-year-old from the University of Oregon wants to become the only Chargers quarterback with at least three of the 22 all-time wins at Arrowhead Stadium alongside Dan Fouts (seven) and Philip Rivers (six). Herbert will be without wideout Keenan Allen (hamstring), who led Los Angeles with 66 receiving yards against the Raiders, giving DeAndre Carter a chance to prove last week was no fluke. The 29-year-old receiver made three catches for 64 yards and a touchdown on his debut with the Chargers against Las Vegas after signing a one-year contract in April. Carter entered 60 NFL competitions in 2022 with three TD receptions, all of which came during a three-game streak with Washington last season. Predictions for Chiefs vs. Chargers, Week 2

The Chiefs Wire staff shares their predictions for the upcoming Kansas City Chiefs vs. Los Angeles Chargers game. (Author: Gardener)

ChargersAfter a short week, the Kansas City Chiefs are back out there for another game on Thursday Night Football. Just like the last six seasons, Chiefs Wire staff will offer their weekly predictions for every Chiefs game. Below are all of our tips for Kansas City's Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday, September 15 at 7:15 p.m. CT at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. I feel like the Chiefs have a lot going for them in this matchup. Thursday night football is always easier to handle at home, but this is also the home opener for Kansas City. Chiefs Kingdom will be in rare form, especially with all the momentum the team has after last week. They're also celebrating Arrowhead Stadium's 50th anniversary, so I expect the crowd to be particularly energetic and loud. On offense, I think the Chiefs need to get creative with passing to limit Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. That means leaning on the run-game, screen passes, motion, and play-action passing to really thwart their ability to just flatten their ears. However, they will be counting on Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie to win one-on-one matchups sometime during the night. If the game boils down to special teams and the kicking game, this won't be the week for the Chiefs with Harrison Butker out. That in and of itself could be a positive result considering how Patrick Mahomes played less than a week ago. The home opener is always a special time for Kansas City Chiefs fans, and it's made even more special because it's being shown nationally for Thursday Night Football. The Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers in the first-ever Amazon Prime broadcast of the regular season, ushering in a new era in how the game is presented to fans. Mahomes will continue to use all of his weapons with more targets for Mecole Hardman this time around as the offense evolves weekly. On defense, the Chiefs will rely more on their defensive line to pressure Justin Herbert to force bad shots. A big game could be on the horizon for Pro Bowl duo Chris Jones and Frank Clark as they look to send a message to their rivals in front of their home crowd. Schematically, I think the Chiefs' defense is a good fit against the Charger offense, but ultimately it will come down to putting pressure on Justin Herbert. The Chiefs did a good job pressuring Kyler Murray last week and need to carry that momentum over to Thursday night. On the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs' offensive line needs to keep Patrick Mahomes clean. I don't expect the Chargers to blitz much, which means six to eight defenders often fall back into cover. Mahomes needs to be patient and distribute the ball effectively like he did last week. The two matchups between the Chiefs and the Chargers last season were decided by a touchdown, so I'm expecting something similar with this one. This should be a close game coming down the wire. The Chiefs' offense appeared to be in midseason form last week despite losing receiver Tyreek Hill to Miami. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes takes advantage of the fact that he has a deeper offense to spread the ball. I expect the Chargers to focus on covering tight end Travis Kelce and WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, meaning this could be a big game for Chiefs running backs or potentially WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling. On the defensive end, I think the Chiefs will notch up a few sacks. They came so close last week, but Cardinals QB Kyler Murray was able to dodge; Chargers QB Justin Herbert isn't nearly as fast as Murray. Hopefully the sacks will come from rookie defenseman George Karlaftis, but fellow defensemen Chris Jones and Mike Danna also looked great last week.

Lewandowski regrets missed chances against ex-club Bayern as Barcelona falter again

Robert Lewandowski's return to the Allianz Arena didn't go as planned as Barcelona endured more misery against well-known opponents Bayern Munich. (Author: Gardener)

BarcelonaMUNICH, Germany -- Second-half goals from Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane tainted Robert Lewandowski's return to the Allianz Arena as Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 2-0 in Champions League Group C. It was an unfortunate return to Bayern for Lewandowski, who is Bayern's second-highest goalscorer of all time but joined the Catalans in the summer after eight years. The loss extends Barcelona's rough run of results in Munich. The Blaugrana are now without a win in their last seven appearances at Bayern, recording two draws and five defeats. Bayern are now leaders with six points from two games. Barcelona have three points along with Internazionale. Bayern Munich extended their dominance over Barcelona with a 2-0 win in Champions League Group C at the Allianz Arena and recorded their fifth consecutive win against the LaLiga giants. Two goals within four minutes of the second half - a Lucas Hernandez header in the 51st minute followed by a solo goal from Leroy Sane three minutes later - were enough to seal the win and put Bayern clearly at the top of their group bring to. And the win means Bayern have won four in their five-game streak by a margin of 19 goals over Barcelona's, including the infamous 8-2 quarter-final win in Lisbon in 2020. Barca also suffered two 3-0 defeats most recently accept against the team of Julian Nagelsmann season. To add to Barcelona's misery, Bayern have now scored 30 goals against them in the Champions League, nine more than Paris Saint-Germain, the second-most successful side against the Spanish club. Although they created a few chances for Robert Lewandowski in the first half, Barcelona rarely looked like Barcelona would emerge victorious in Germany and they had no reaction to Bayern's strong start to the second half. Xavi Hernandez's side are still rebuilding significantly after Lionel Messi's departure to PSG last year and looked a step below Bayern, who inflicted yet another humiliating defeat on the five-time Champions League winners. Bayern's second-best goalscorer didn't have to wait long for his first game after leaving in the summer, but he endured a frustrating evening against his old side. Had he finished in his usual sober manner, Lewandowski would have silenced the Allianz Arena with a hat-trick before half-time. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved his header with a reflex save in the 20th minute, but Lewandowski should have scored just before that, firing over the bar from ten meters after Gavi's serve. Some of Dayot Upamecano's and Noussair Mazraoui's last encounters were also denied by Lewandowski when he had the goal in sight, but it was just one of those nights when nothing went right for the 34-year-old. When he showed up to warm up before the game, Lewandowski received a rousing welcome from the home fans. 3. Barcelona, Inter Milan now second Barcelona thought or hoped their brief taste of the Europa League, having failed to qualify in the Champions League group last season, was nothing more than an isolated case , but they could face a replay this time around Tuesday's defeat. There's no shame in being beaten by the eternal Bundesliga champions, of course, but with Bayern now firmly at the top of Group C with two wins from two games, second place is developing into a head-to-head battle between Barca and Internazionale. Both European heavyweights lost to Bayern but beat Viktoria Pilsen, so it will now come down to who performs best when they meet on back-to-back matchdays on October 4th and 12th. And with Inter hosting the first game next month at the San Siro, Barca know they can't afford another defeat away when they travel to Italy. Bayern, Barca and Inter are likely to get maximum points against Czech champions Pilsen. So everything is at stake between Barca and Inter. Benfica could beat Barca to second place in the group last season, but Inter are a stronger team. The German midfielder only came on as a half-time substitute but he changed the game for Bayern, adding vigor and a spirit of adventure to the home team's midfield. Goretzka's long-range shot, well parried by Marc Andre Ter Stegen, went straight to the corner from which Lucas Hernandez scored the opening goal for Bayern. The Barcelona defender got a hot streak from Bayern's Leroy Sane and looked like someone who wishes he'd stayed at Chelsea to live a quiet life on the substitutes' bench. No boos just applause for Robert Lewandowski on his return to Bayern with Barcelona - Mark Ogden (@MarkOgden_) September 13, 2022 However, it's about winning and we need to keep up better at crucial moments by scoring two goals to score and be more effective when we create chances." -- Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez But of course, if you don't take chances against a big rival like Bayern, you will end up paying for it." -- Barcelona's Pedri "In the first half, Barcelona had better chances than us; our last ball wasn't quite there. In the second half it was much better and our efficiency made the difference." -- Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann - Bayern Munich have scored 30 goals against Barcelona in the Champions League. Paris Saint-Germain are second with 21 goals against the Catalans. - Bayern have beaten Barcelona 19-4 in the last five Champions League games. Things got even worse in the second half, with Bayern leading 11-1. - Bayern are the only team that have played away from Barcelona at least three times in the Champions League and not come away with a win. There are now seven games without a win. Bayern Munich: Back in action in the Bundesliga where they will look to break a run of three straight draws against FC Augsburg on Saturday. Then the international break, followed by a return to the league against Bayer Leverkusen in September. The next Champions League game will take place on October 4th in Viktoria Pilsen. Barcelona: After all, they remain unbeaten in LaLiga. The Catalans will look to shake off Tuesday's defeat by Elche at the Camp Nou on Saturday. 1 after the international break and then a tough Champions League game at Inter Milan on October 4th.

Las Vegas Raiders DC Patrick Graham Week 2 Update

The Las Vegas Raiders DC Patrick Graham delivered his second week speech from the Las Vegas Raiders. (Author: Gardener)

Patrick GrahamThe Las Vegas Raiders DC Patrick Graham delivered his second week speech from the Las Vegas Raiders. HENDERSON, Nev. - The Las Vegas Raiders enter week two of the 2022 NFL schedule with a 0-1 record. DC Patrick Graham took time out after discussing the film to update on the state of the Las Vegas Raiders' defense. Q: What was your overall assessment of how your defense played? Coach Graham: “You know, the boys went out there and fought, played pretty hard. The Chargers, they have a really good team. I was proud of how we fought at the end, just didn't make enough plays and had to improve some techniques here and there. And we're going to get back to work tomorrow, well we went back to work yesterday, just watched the tape and learned from it. I take it as a lesson in terms of how we were able to execute the game plan, just a chance to improve and that usually happens whether you win or lose on opening day. Q: What is your overall assessment of the Nate Hobbs game? Coach Graham: "Well that will come up as the year progresses as we value defensive players who can play on multiple courts just to be able to move them around and see how we're going to affect offense. And one thing about Nate, he will be competing. He came on the last third down, the penultimate third down, that was a pretty good game, third and three right there. He was on her go-to guy, and he made a play. So really proud of him there and he just knows like everyone else was just trying to improve day by day. Coach Graham: “I mean he was a pretty good player last year. I mean, what I just said to him when he came out of college, I remember when he was in Illinois and we obviously rated him when I was in New York and I liked him. I didn't know if he was going to be a starter right away and I told him that because you get to know these guys through the process. Before I even had a chance to coach him, I said, "Hey, I'm proud that you made yourself a starter so early." And so, just to see his progression since his senior year in Illinois, last year here with the Raiders and now that we have him I'm really proud of him. And the thing is, he's hungry to improve on the way down.” Q: When you're on the field, how much of your adjustments do the coaches above tell you? Coach Graham: "I'll say that, we call the defense collective. I've been really fortunate to have a really good coaching staff and this year is no different. You know, in terms of the guys at the top of the box, the guys at the bottom on the sidelines, (they) really don't have an ego about it. The thing is it's a collaborative effort and we're trying to do what's best for this series, this piece, and I'm always asking questions. Ultimately it comes down to me making a decision about when to make the call, but the adjustments are always made collaboratively, and I will say sometimes even by the players. That's the beauty of having smart players, having people who can see things on the field, having veterans, just getting their input, and it helps in the game because they're out there on the field when he's with missing an injury, how much adjustment is that during the game? “Well, the thing is, the game is a contact sport. That's why we work every day throughout the year, because you might have a plan, but you have to adapt in the game. Not unlike what will happen this week. Something is going to happen this week and we have to adapt. I mean look at the Cardinals, they have a lot of good players. They have a really good coaching staff and they can attack you by running the ball, they can attack you by passing the ball, they can attack you with loose plays. So something is going to happen within the game that will change our game plan to some degree and we have to adapt. Because whatever it is, whether it's on our side, injuries or whatever it may be, or needs to change schematic because they're attacking a weakness, we need to change and adapt, and that's just part of the game . ” Q: If you look at Anthony Averett's absence from secondary school, how much do you expect guys like Amik Robertson and Sam Webb to really fill that void? Coach Graham: “Well, the coach will come back to the injury issues. But what we're proud of, and I know these guys, especially in that corner room, it's the next man up, everyone is competing. I mean, hopefully they all see themselves as the guy who could go in and play. So we'll see how it looks in practice this week. Josh [McDaniels] will talk about any injuries but all I know for sure is I'm looking forward to the guys that are going to compete. The boys compete against each other every day. I know that, the Cardinals don't care.” And how important is it to put pressure on a player like Kyler Murray? Coach Graham: “I mean again, Chan [Chandler] and Maxx, they work hard every day. I mean these guys have had a lot of success in the league and they did some games on Sunday. If we don't get the "W," I know that's the only thing she cares about. That's the only thing that interests me. So the big thing is influencing the passer and this week we have a challenge, it's a little bit different but still the loose games are playing. That's what we have to deal with this week. But each will play a role in containing it because it is so dynamic. He's a really dynamic player. And it gets interesting because he's been so successful in recent years. But we will continue this process. We've already started that process but we're going to continue it today and for the rest of the week.” Is that something that depends on the team and staff groups you're playing against that contributed to that? Coach Graham: "I won't go into specifics but in general, the head coach, the GM and any input they might ask of me, we're trying to do what's best for the team this week." Coach Graham: "When you're dealing with a running back, just like you did with [James] Conner this week, it starts with setting the edge and then playing with the inner power. So when you rate run defense, I always talk about watching from the sideline view. If you can see it from the sideline view where the line of scrimmage changes, the guys are playing with their hands, the edge is set, there are no easy bounce out runs. This really is how you evaluate the run defense. So you know we're dealing with the scheme this week (with Arizona) and they've got a good offensive line, they've got tight ends that are ready to block and the fact that you're dealing with the quarterback- Part to do Running game Watch it from the sideline view Is the edge set Ain't no easy runs on the edge Are g Are you using their hands? What do you teach a player when he knows he's going to be called, but you're trying to do whatever it takes to stop the quarterback? Coach Graham: “Avoid the penalty. We teach within the rules and we just try to teach that and some fouls are close and some aren't but we just have to avoid the penalty there. Q: With such a long season, is there a risk of coaches overreacting after just one game? Coach Graham: "No. I mean, you could, but we've been in this business long enough. Every game is a learning opportunity. Of course you want to win more than you lose, but it's a chance to learn. Lessons will be learned from this week's game. Lessons will be learned from this week's game. The greatest thing is the race to improve. You know, half the teams are 1-0 and half the teams are 0-1, it's a race to get better in this league. And that's all we're going to try and just go day by day and just try to improve. Q: If Kyler Murray doesn't have a weapon like DeAndre Hopkins, does it make a difference to you in this game in terms of preparation? Coach Graham: “Well, I mean, the game is about the people. So obviously if Hopkins were there it would be a little different. You're talking about the back (James Conner) being pretty dynamic, the tight end [Zach] Ertz. I mean last time I played Arizona he didn't have an Ertz and he's quite dynamic and even the young guy who just got in there, 83, [Greg] Dortch, did a couple of games the other day. I know that, with a quarterback like [Kyler] Murray, he knows how to get the ball in the playmaker's hands. So we really need to focus on making sure we defend their scheme, make sure we try to take away their best players and then see what happens from there. But obviously every time a player is out, the game plan changes, I think a bit. But we have to make that adjustment all the time.” Q: When the offense turns the ball over, how much more emphasis do you place on your defense to try to go outside and make turnovers to get the ball back? Coach Graham: “Turnovers are an important indicator of who will win or lose the game. So, I think our focus from day one is we want to have ball hawks on defense, so whether it's hitting the ball out, aiming the ball up to intercept, giving tips. I mean most defenses in the league would say that. Every week we try to emphasize it, every week we try to emphasize the goals and if we don't get the results you don't want to overreact to steal your tenure there, but we just have to get back to the drawing board, just work keep on the basics and keep working on it. But we always focus on defense and try to get the ball away from offense. The game revolved around the ball. So if you could get the ball, that's a good thing.” The Las Vegas Raiders (0-1) play at home at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, scoring at 1:25 p.m. PT to the Arizona Cardinals (0-1).
