Impact of Jaylen Brown's trade talk, Kevin Durant's injury concerns, Ime Udoka's minutes distribution

We run a weekly mailbag during the Celtics off-season. If you have questions about the Celtics or the NBA, email [email protected] or tweet @briantrobb. Why didn't the Celtics just come out publicly and say they were committed to Jaylen to reassure him they weren't buying him? (Author: Gardener)

Jaylen Brown'sIf you have questions about the Celtics or the NBA, email [email protected] or tweet @briantrobb. Why didn't the Celtics just come out publicly and say they were committed to Jaylen to reassure him they weren't buying him? If they were trading for KD they wouldn't be doing it now and wouldn't let the TPE expire. — Joe P. It's a legitimate question, but teams generally never come out and comment on trade reports for a variety of reasons, including the fact it sets a dangerous precedent for commenting on future reports. That being said, this is a pretty unique case involving one of the team's stars. So it will be fascinating to see how Brad Stevens handles it when he inevitably asks the question (probably just before training camp). However, the team won't volunteer to talk about it in the middle of the off-season, for obvious reasons. As for the Durant deal, given Brooklyn's demands, any negotiation there will be a long process given what's at stake. Obviously no team met their requirements right away, so this will take time as the market settles or networks change their asking price. Anyhow, the Celtics really don't need Evan Fournier's TPE to complete a Durant deal, so its expiry is pretty much independent of a schedule. Do you think the Celtics are waiting for the Thunder/Rockets to lose a few players (both have 15+ rosters)? More than those few teams, I think the waiting game now reflects the entire free agent market. Most free agents still out there have to settle for the minimum veteran contracts, allowing both teams/players to make their decisions strategically, with an order of preference that could change as other trades take place (opening roster slots etc.) Oklahoma City and Houston can carry 20 players through camp, giving the Celtics no chance of signing one to their roster early in the preseason. However, Boston could be strategically keeping a roster spot open in hopes of landing someone he likes who will be waived in October's roster cut. The odds of this player making it to Boston via waivers probably aren't great, but there's always a remote possibility. Putting the KD noise aside for now, let's assume this is the roster we have for the season and let's talk a little bit about tiny spreads and rotations. Assuming a normal regular season game against a decent team (e.g. no blowout) and not back-to-back (when presumably they'll sit regularly and/or alternately with guys like Al and possibly others like Brogdon), here I think the Minutes would be distributed like this: I would probably move Smart's minutes closer to 30 and even try to take Rob/Brown/Tatum a few minutes each to reduce wear on those guys. Ultimately, I expect Brogdon to play 30 minutes a game rather than 25, even coming off the bench. Payton Pritchard will also intervene here in a couple of places as you mentioned and that should further reduce some Smart/Brown/Tatum minutes in those cases. Why is Durant's injuries/age not given enough attention? Sure he's top 5 at the moment but he's been missing a lot lately shouldn't that make him more of a top 15 player not too far off Jaylen? Why are we assuming his injuries will only occur in the regular season? I actually think there was a fair amount of emphasis on that, especially in the Celtics fan base. Tearing his Achilles tendon at age 31 is scary, but we've seen him at his best on points over the past two seasons, particularly in the 2021 postseason, and he was averaging 30 points a game on 51 percent shooting last year. I'm downplaying the injury worries a bit myself because the Celtics rotation would be so well structured to protect him. If they made a trade for him, Boston would still have a very deep rotation around him. The Nets had to play almost 40 minutes a night against Durant for the last two months of the regular season last year to even make it through the postseason. That would be far from the case with the Celtics, who could get that number closer to 30. The risk of injury would still be very real but there would certainly be more protections to ensure he was healthy for the biggest games. How does Stevens smooth things out with JB when they're not trading for KD? Which backup big man do you think they will sign among the veteran minimum boys? Who's making the most appearances from the bench this year, Hauser or Pritchard? Do you see how they act for a big man when no vet min? There's no question that Pritchard will have a bigger impact off the bench than Hauser this year given his track record. Given the limited options in the large free agent market, I would expect an off-the-radar signing (internationally big?) or some sort of trade on most options out there. It's possible that a few more names could enter the market if another blockbuster trade with Durant or Donovan Mitchell goes down, leading to another big name or two entering the open market. Who do you think will get the last spots? Actually had several questions about Matt Ryan this week! The Celtics have their two-way slots filled, however, so the best he can hope for right now is probably a Proof 10 with an outside shot to get into the roster with a strong camp. However, it's likely a waiting game for now as Celtics consider other moves. opening night? Etc. No shortage of options for NBA opening night with the Celtics. Are They Going Nets-Celtics Given The Trade Rumors Swirling Last Month? I would bet my money on two of those three making up opening night and the Christmas table. Please send any Celtics or NBA questions to [email protected] or tweet @briantrobb for a future mailbag

Wait, who said that? Your favorite quote probably isn't from the person you think it is

Most likely, that favorite quote you love to throw around isn't from the person you thought it was. (Author: Gardener)

On today's episode of the 5 Things podcast, chances are the favorite quote you're throwing around isn't from the person you thought it was. From the movie quote "Luke, I am your father" from Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back to the quote "Golf is spoiled by a good walk" by Mark Twain - both wrong, by the way. Each generation misquotes in its own way. Some are simply misquoted, while others are simply misremembered (Take this Star Wars quote, for example. Darth Vader actually says, "No, I am your father.") Fred Shapiro, lecturer and editor of the Yale Book of Quotations and The New Yale Book of Quotations is dedicated to studying citations and ensuring that they are correct. He sat down with the 5 Things team to speak quotes. Get all the news you need in your inbox every morning. He said our culture today is more geared towards conciseness with snippets and sound bites. That people are less likely to read through a book or an argument. He said some of the misquotes come from this way of thinking. He said that movie quotes are very popular and are often misquoted and condensed. But does it really matter if a person gets the gist of what is being said? Shapiro said it was important. Don't believe us on some of the incorrect quotes? Click here to see the clip from Apocalypse Now mentioned below. How about this quote from Sarah Palin? Click here for her ABC News interview and click here for the Saturday Night Live skit. Still not sure if former President Barrack O'bama misquoted Maya Angelou? Podcasts: True crime, in-depth interviews and more USA TODAY podcasts right here. James Brown: Hello and welcome to Five Things. Every Sunday we take an idea, a story, a question and go deep. And this week we're going to talk about quotes. A little over a minute after his remarks he said... Barack Obama: The late great Maya Angelou once said, "A bird does not sing because it has an answer." James Brown: The following year, the US Postal Service introduced a dedicated Angelou Stamp with her face on it next to the exact same quote. It was an instant collector's item because Angelou never said that. It even appears in one of her books. Mark Saunders, then the Postal Service spokesman, told the Washington Post that numerous references said the quote was from Angelou. And that it was somehow connected to her book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. There are at least half a dozen other quotes that people say are from Angelou that question the likes of Fred Shapiro. Shapiro lectures and works on special projects at Yale Law School. He is the editor of The Yale Book of Quotations and The New Yale Book of Quotation. In these huge books he spends more than 2000 pages checking and explaining wrong quotes. From Mark Twain to Sarah Palin, Shapiro told me that every generation misquotes in its own way. Fred Shapiro, welcome to Five Things. Fred Shapiro: Hello. Thanks for the invitation. James Brown: One of the most quoted people of all time is Mark Twain. Fred Shapiro: Oh, well, you're definitely right about almost always getting it wrong. If someone tells you that Mark Twain said something, you can be sure that Mark Twain probably didn't say that something. He had a lot of funny things that he said, but the things that people quote these days are usually things that were said by other people much later than in his day. It's a quote magnet that people want to believe that a popular person, a famous person said something they like. James Brown: Is there a particular Twain quote that is often misquoted, or more often than others? Fred Shapiro: Well, there are so many of them. Just one example is "A Golf is a Good Walk" which is almost always attributed to Mark Twain. But in fact, the earliest evidence of someone using it was in 1913, after Twain was dead. It's anonymous as to who said it. Many famous quotes come from the mouth of an obscure person who is quickly forgotten. James Brown: That's a really interesting concept. Fred Shapiro: Yes. Yes. Not only Twain is a quote magnet. You also get people like Yogi Berra, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, who are routinely credited with quotes when they've never said anything like it. Sometimes you can tell the language and the diction, the tone of a quote is often very modern, but it's attributed to someone from a past century when they just didn't speak the way we speak today. James Brown: You're known for this kind of research. They wrote a book about it, at least one. How do you find out that a quote is not from the person to whom it is attributed? Fred Shapiro: Well, I'm glad I came at a time when the tools for fantastic research of this kind were emerging. And they started in the 19th or early 20th century, before there were computers to help with research. Realizing that these quote books were unreliable and not the result of thorough research, I began developing my own quote book, The Yale Book of Quotations, which has now become the standard reference book. I was compiling The Yale Book of Quotations just at the time, I was lucky, just at the time there was a huge explosion of computer internet databases where you could find millions and billions even trillions of newspaper articles, historical newspaper articles, old could browse newspaper articles, current newspaper articles. That you could type in the words of a quote and the database, like Google Books or newspaper databases, will search through a huge amount of material. I've been able to keep re-writing the standard stories of famous quotes and getting a lot closer to the truth about who actually invented the quotes we love so much. James Brown: If you say that these quote books, these classic quote books, the Bartlett's of the world, are flawed, that they weren't the result of thorough research, how do you think they were put together? Fred Shapiro: Well, hundreds of years ago, there were people who put together ordinary books, they were called. That whenever they read something that they really liked, that they thought was profound or funny, they wrote it down in a book, a kind of diary, that they kept. There have been people doing this for hundreds of years. Not systematically, not even covering all the famous quotes. I was shocked to find that Bartlett's and the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations often omit some of the most famous quotes. It's like looking it up in a dictionary, Webster's Dictionary, and forgetting to type the word "umbrella." But a lot happens with the citation dictionaries because they were unsystematically compiled from private collections of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs that people liked. Through the use of computational methods, I was able to fill in the gaps in famous quotes that were omitted in other quote books, and actually trace back for each famous quote. I did some research to trace back as far as possible when they were made. The people who put these books together were knowledgeable, well-read people, and they did their best. I've just published The New Yale Book of Quotations, which goes even further than the original. It has just been published by Yale University Press, The New Yale Book of Quotations. And that's what every entry tries to backtrack, do real research to trace back to the origins of a quote. James Brown: I think what's clear from our conversation so far is that misquoting isn't new, it's happening all the time. Is there something about today's misquotes that is different than in the past? Fred Shapiro: Our culture in general is leaning toward succinctness, snippets, soundbites, so now people are less likely to read through a book and try to grapple with a long 300-page argument. They go for things that are shorter. Some of the wrong quotes come from there. I'm just giving an example that in the movie Apocalypse Now... I mean, movie quotes are very popular. In the movie Apocalypse Now, the famous quote is: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory.” This is a very often repeated quote from Apocalypse Now. But the actual quote in the movie, if you see the movie, listen to the movie, Robert Duvall actually says... Robert Duvall: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Fred Shapiro: "The smell, you know that gas smell? The whole hill smelled of victory.” In the vernacular, this has condensed into a short quote. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory." That happens often. Things will be "remembered in a more punchy and concise way". Even literary quotes like Shakespeare. Hamlet has a famous quote: "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him well." Well, indeed, Shakespeare wrote: 'Oh, poor Yorick. The vernacular changes quotes to make them flow better to make them shorter. I think this is happening more and more in our time now than in the past. James Brown: That sounds like the influence of social media. Fred Shapiro: Absolutely. Social media has a huge impact on things like this. That people often say, well, to find out the exact wording of a quote, or to find out who came from it or how it should be spelled, all you have to do is go to Google. But if you do a Google search you will get the full impact of millions of people misquoting things. And just because Google finds an alleged quote or an alleged author of a quote doesn't mean that's really the origin or how something should be articulated. James Brown: What would you say to someone who would argue that I get the gist of the idea that it's not important to know exactly where that concept, that quote, that line is from? Fred Shapiro: Often when you misunderstand the source of a quote, you misunderstand the ideas and then the lesson of what the person was trying to say as they penned it. Especially in today's politics, political quotes are often distorted to serve a political agenda. People tweak quotes or distort quotes for their own purposes. James Brown: Sarah Palin actually comes to mind with the concept you are drafting. I don't know if you know the quote I'm talking about. Fred Shapiro: What quote is this? James Brown: It's widely believed that she said, "I can see Russia from my house." Fred Shapiro: Okay. Sarah Palin: They are our direct neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska. Fred Shapiro: What she said wasn't literally that she could see Russia from her house, but that Alaska was near Russia. That was blown up as the ultimate proof that Sarah Palin is a fool, but that's not really what she said. If this line is to be criticized, it would present it as a kind of foreign policy proof that it originated in Alaska and Alaska's nearby Russia. But the actual words have been misquoted. In fact, "I can see Russia from my house" didn't come out of the mouth of Sarah Palin, it came from Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey: I believe that diplomacy should be the cornerstone of any foreign policy. And I can see Russia from my house. Fred Shapiro: In my book, I explain the truth of all of this. James Brown: One of the things that has caught your attention lately is your work on the Pledge of Allegiance. What did you find out while researching this? Fred Shapiro: We found that the person who was credited with it didn't say it, couldn't have said it. Because we found a newspaper article where the Pledge of Allegiance was published before Francis Bell, who is the person who always gets credit for it, says he wrote it. And it's possible that that person was actually a 13-year-old schoolboy in Kansas. Fred Shapiro: This is an impressive example that the true story differs rather from the accepted story that they would find if they were looking for a significant quotations like The New Yale Book of Quotations. James Brown: There's something else about the story that makes me think. Is it easier to do what Bellamy might have done, which is maybe steal a pledge of allegiance from a 13-year-old now than it was then? Fred Shapiro: In a way it's easier now because you can find someone else's words online and then take them as your own and get lost in a sea of misinformation on the internet. But it's also more difficult in the sense that people like me can come along and do the research. And in some cases, publish it from the New York Times or from Wikipedia. You have to get the New York Times to publish an article or put it on Wikipedia, which is now a source many people would look at. James Brown: So it's easier to grasp the concept but harder to maintain the illusion that it's yours? Fred Shapiro: Yes, although I have to say the powers of misquoting are pretty strong. And sometimes it's a losing battle to unearth the real story. James Brown: The Powers of Misquoting. James Brown: Well, Fred Shapiro, thanks for joining me. Fred Shapiro: Well, I enjoyed talking to you. Perhaps your listeners can think a little more about the ideas of quotes and misquotes. James Brown: If you enjoy the show, please give us a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you hear it. Email me at [email protected] or find me on Twitter at James Brown TV. Thanks to Fred Shapiro for joining me. Links to his books can be found in the description. Taylor Wilson will be back tomorrow morning with Five Things You Need To Know for Monday. And from all of us at USA Today, thank you for listening. I'm James Brown. I'm James Brown. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Wait, who said that? AEW Dynamite is fighting for the results of Fallen 2022

Grades, Analysis, Reactions from AEW's Fight for the Fallen, including Jon Moxley vs. Rush for the AEW Interim World Championship and Bryan Danielson's return. (Author: Gardener)

AEW DynamiteAEW Dynamite Fight for the Fallen 2022 Results: Winners, Grades & Highlights AEW Dynamite Fight for the Fallen 2022 Results: Winners, Grades & Highlights After a celebrated Ring of Honor Pay-Per-View victory over his brother Dragon Lee, Rush challenged AEW Interim world champion Jon Moxley in Wednesday's Dynamite main event. Would Moxley continue to establish himself as the top industry contender, or would the international heel claim the biggest win of his career and first championship in his new promotion? AEW fans found the answer to that question and more on TBS this week. AEW wasted little time opening the show with interim world champion Jon Moxley defending against El Toro Blanco, Rush. The former Ring of Honor World Champion dominated Moxley for over two-thirds of the game. He overpowered and knocked down the champion, bleeding him early and putting him relentlessly on the defensive. Moxley hit back late and delivered a superplex to spark his comeback. Despite Rush's attempts to dethrone him in the late match, Moxley earned the hard-fought victory with a Deathrider and the Bulldog Choke. After the match, Chris Jericho and the Jericho Appreciation Society broke up. Jericho challenged for the world title, and Moxley said only if he gets "Lionheart" instead of the lesser incarnations we've seen lately is a real main event that will draw fans to the arena and viewers to the show. With Jericho's recent booking and the questions surrounding it, there is reason to worry about the title changing hands. He should never have beaten Eddie Kingston in a Barbed Wire Everywhere match a week ago, and it wouldn't be at all surprising if he inexplicably beats Moxley as well. Speaking of world champions, he demolished the house with Rush in the opening game of the night. It was a pay-per-view quality main event that benefited both the defeated challenger and Moxley's title win. Rush is a star of the future and, if the AEW officials are smart, a future is more immediate than not. The match started before the bell with champion and challenger brawling on the floor. Moxley was bleeding five minutes later, and at this point it's just a joke. Jim Ross downplayed Rush's clout by suggesting Moxley underestimated her. William Regal corrected the Hall of Famer, telling him that Moxley didn't underestimate him in that regard, despite the doubters. Ricky Starks started the night defending his FTW Championship against Danhausen, a challenger he knocked out early with the Roshambo Javelin. He finished them in the grip of Hook, an impromptu challenger to the title his father created. Here's a guy who introduced the very title in question and watched his son win that title in the greatest moment of his young career. Taz treated himself professionally, but you could hear in his voice what this moment meant to him beyond his on-screen persona. Starks defeated Danhausen to retain; Hook defeated Starks to win the title. The crowd's roar for Hook was a nod to a young artist who is already considered a real star by AEW believers. "My goddamn time is now!" Said Starks in a post-match promo, drawing a huge babyface pop in the process. In the same promo, powerhouse Hobbs obliterated Starks with a clothesline, potentially spelling the end of Team Taz. Sammy Guevara wrestled his first singles match since April. Take on Dante Martin in a battle of AEW's brightest young stars. Neither produced a lasting advantage, but a late-game ankle injury slowed Martin down considerably. A distraction by Conti allowed Guevara to capitalize and deliver a springboard cutter to victory. After the match, Conti attacked Skye Blue and the heels did further damage until Eddie Kingston, Ortiz and Ruby Soho hit the ring to make the save. This clearly leads to a mixed tag match pitting Kingston and Soho against Guevara and Conti. While this might not be the most enticing match for Kingston, coming fresh from a Main Event-worthy feud with Chris Jericho, things are almost certainly going to heat up. Plus, there's something for Conti and Soho to do when they're not on the women's cover, and these are storylines that AEW badly needs. Jungle Boy stepped into the ring for a scathing promo about Christian Cage, only to be interrupted by Captain Charisma, who claimed he still had the advantage because he knew all of the babyface's secrets. The crowd erupted in Jungle Boy's insults towards Cage while he loudly taunted the heel's reactionary comments. The feud is as good as anything AEW is doing right now, and the look of hesitation on Luchasaurus' face as he and his pal left suggests Cage's overture to the big man may have made an impression. If that's the case, expect more twists and turns before the inevitable one-on-one match. B- for the match; A for the promo segment Martin selling the leg injury during the springboard cutter so it buckled under him was a great spot. Backstage, Sonjay Dutt's rant earned him, Jay Lethal and Satnam Singh a six-man tag match against Best Friends and Orange Cassidy Friday night on Rampage. Jungle Boy claimed Cage needs the money from Casino Battle Royale in 2021 because his wife is divorcing him, which drew a huge reaction from fans. Backstage, Brandon Cutler updated The Young Bucks on the newly announced Trios Championships. Matt and Nick Jackson attempted to speak to Hangman Page only to be interrupted by The Dark Order. "Smart" Mark Sterling's personal vendetta against Swerve Strickland manifested itself in a two-on-one handicap match as the attorney teamed up with his client Tony Nese to battle the AEW Tag Team Champion. Strickland and Nese did most of the heavy lifting, but the heat came from the involvement of Sterling, who was trying to avoid a caning. It did not work. After defeating Neese with a double kick to the floor, Swerve returned to the ring and rocked Sterling with a running heel kick and scored the win. Backstage, Ring of Honor's Josh Woods stood over an unconscious Keith Lee. teasing an alliance with Nese and Sterling. That was a whole lot of nothing -- a match specifically scheduled to make way for the Woods revelation and a hint of an upcoming tag team rivalry. If that's the case and the feud is aimed at defending Swerve in Our Glory against Nese and Woods, the matches will be great. If not, this segment seems even more meaningless. Strickland has been fantastic and continues to thrive with more television time, something he's never really capitalized on elsewhere. Sterling's facial expressions upon realizing he'd accidentally been substituted on were great, covering up his sense of dread. He joined House of Black, stating that The Redeemer could stop worshiping the throne and sit on it instead. This time, the AEW World Women's Championship was up for grabs in a match that the commentary team pulled off beautifully. Yamashita impressed with fast, hard punches to stun the champion more than once. Rosa fought back and refused to give the challenger any sustained advantage. The challenger nonetheless managed to deliver a German deadlift suplex towards the end of the fight, only for the champion to keep fighting and eventually defeating her with the Fire Thunder Driver for the pinfall victory. This would have been a killer pay-per-view match, but without AEW promoting the challenger and informing the audience why she's an amazing wrestler, we get matches like this: amazing in-ring competitions that by far are not as hot as they should be combatants began throwing strikes. Yes, the match was great, but AEW needs to do better in the women's division and stop randomly throwing matches together. Consistently give these competitors the same storyline opportunities that the men are given. Yamashita delivered a roundhouse kick that stunned the champion and led to a great near-fall in the Trios Championship Tournament. Bryan Danielson returned to the ring in Wednesday night's main event, fighting the Jericho Appreciation Society's Daniel Garcia. Garcia slowed his momentum but quickly found himself back on the defensive. That was until Danielson came off the top rope and teased the effects of head and neck injuries that have plagued him for the past decade. Garcia charged like a shark smelling blood in the water and delivered a disgusting DDT to the exposed concrete on the arena floor. Danielson fought back but was never able to string together enough offense to put Garcia out of the way thanks to the fallout from those aforementioned injuries. Interference from Jake Hager, who brought him out from under the square circle, didn't help. Garcia took advantage, delivering a Spike Piledriver and using a Sharpshooter with added torque until The American Dragon passed out and the referee rang the bell. That was one hell of a match with some expert storytelling from Danielson. The entire wrestling world knows he has a long history of concussions, so why not work in the match and play it out? Not only does Garcia pull off a much-needed signature win, but questions are now being raised about the Babyface's ability to get back to the heights of his game. The physicality was exactly what one would expect, the in-ring action was second to none on this show, and the Jericho Appreciation Society stood tall to wrap up the show the same night that the group's namesake staked his claim on a shot at claimed the AEW World Championship title. The blistering start to the match was fantastic and set the tone for the physicality of the entire ordeal. Danielson prepared for the face stomps, but Garcia, scouting his opponent, countered, flipping him over and into a sleeping bag. Garcia sitting back and then sitting back on the sharpshooter was great and really added to the credibility that Danielson could potentially fit out of pain.

Experts say the US' 'substantial proposal' may not be enough to bring Brittney Griner home

Experts say the US' 'substantial proposal' may not be enough to bring Brittney Griner home (Author: Gardener)

Brittney GrinerOn Wednesday afternoon, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the US had made a "substantive proposal" to Russia aimed at securing the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan. Will the Russians accept a 2-for-1 swap for a notorious arms dealer that has been at the top of the Kremlin's wish list for prisoner swaps for years? S. as the release of Viktor Bout? Blinken said on Wednesday that the US originally submitted its offer to the Kremlin "weeks ago" and that governments have "repeatedly and directly communicated about this proposal" since then. In a sharp reversal of recent US isolationist policy towards Russia, Blinken said he intends to "personally pursue Griner and Whelan with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov" soon. S. went public with his offer, rather than complying with the diplomatic silence that often characterizes prisoner-release negotiations. Yahoo Sports spoke to a handful of experts on hostage diplomacy and Russian foreign policy on Thursday to assess how negotiations might proceed from here. Several pundits said a deal could be months away - and that the final iteration is unlikely to match what U. Dartmouth University foreign policy fellow Danielle Gilbert claims the US has not publicly announced its trade offer would have if they assumed that Russia would be willing to accept it. For Gilbert, Blinken's comments Wednesday point to "complicated negotiations" that are "mere steps away from completion." "My guess is that this won't be the final deal," Gilbert said. William Pomeranz, an authority on Russian law and politics, agreed that the Kremlin would be in no rush to accept the Biden administration's initial offer. Biden, Pomeranz emphasized, was under increasing pressure to secure Griner's release. Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, "would love to bring Bout back, but after 14 years it doesn't have the same urgency by any means." S. has pretty much put his cards on the table and now the Russians are in the driver's seat," said Pomeranz, the acting director of the Kennan Institute. Russian officials have previously said they will not accept a deal until Griner's drug trial is complete. Griner's attorney, Maria Blagovolina, told Yahoo Sports Thursday that she expects a verdict and conviction in the first half of August. Brittney Griner stands in a cage in a courtroom before a hearing in Khimki, just outside Moscow. (AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko, Pool) Griner has been behind bars since February 17, when she flew into a Moscow airport and Russian customs officials allegedly found vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage. She was charged with possession of an illegal drug and drug smuggling and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. In early May, the State Department declared Griner unjustly detained without explanation and began negotiations for her release. Whelan, a former Marine, is currently serving a 16-year sentence on espionage charges, which he has consistently denied and which the State Department has called false. Blinken's public confirmation of a bid for Griner and Whelan reflects mounting pressure on the administration to bring both home. In particular, S.'s inability to secure Griner's release has drawn criticism from celebrities of all stripes, from LeBron James to Kim Kardashian, Kerry Washington to Amy Schumer. "One of the things that the IPO does is silence the critics who say the government isn't working on it, that they're not doing enough," Gilbert said. I think it also tells us very publicly that the government is committed to getting Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan back and getting them back together. As the Biden administration shields itself from criticism that it's not doing enough to help Griner and other imprisoned Americans, the president has also opened up to new attacks. Some have already argued that Blinken's press conference unnecessarily angered the Kremlin, jeopardized negotiations for Griner and Whelan, and created incentives for kidnapping Americans traveling abroad in the future. "Every tinny dictator out there looks at America and how we deal with hostage cases and wrongful imprisonment," said Jason Poblete, an attorney who has represented U. “The Secretary of State went on national television and made a spectacle out of it. They don't think they're thinking, 'Wait a minute, if we grab an American, we can negotiate with them, make precise concessions and who knows what else they'll come up with.' Viktor Bout, centre, is led by armed Thai police squads , as he arrives at the Criminal Court in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday October 5, 2010. The Russian arms dealer who once inspired a Hollywood film is back in the headlines with speculation a return to Moscow in a prisoner swap for WBNA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan. (AP Photo/Apichart Weerawong, file) S. had good reason to believe that including Bout in a deal would be enough to tempt Russia. After all, since the 2008 DEA sting operation that led to his capture in Thailand, the Kremlin has been trying to get the so-called “dealer of death” back. Not only has the Kremlin publicly condemned the charges against Bout, American officials have also become aware of underhanded Russian attempts to prevent his extradition to the U. "Putin and other senior government officials were really trying to move heaven and earth and bring him back to Russia," Michael Braun, former DEA operations chief, told Yahoo Sports. Russia didn't give up after Bout was extradited to the US. Russian State media have repeatedly floated potential prison deals for Bout while he serves a 25-year sentence in Illinois Experts speaking to Yahoo Sports in May agreed that securing Bout's release because of his ties to high-level government officials and military intelligence is a priority for Russia. They said that Bout operated under state protection during his career as an arms dealer and that he often served the government's foreign policy interests after Vladimir Putin came to power and reconsolidated Russia's fragmented intelligence community." He is with the Russian Siche connected to the security services,” said Pomeranz. This is the most prominent Russian in U. If a deal swapping Griner and Whelan for Bout can still be struck, it will likely fit Russia's terms and schedule.

We 'signed' Bukayo Saka for Liverpool and the results answered the £100m transfer question

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka has been linked with a move to Liverpool despite Jurgen Klopp's transfer claims (Author: Gardener)

Bukayo SakaLiverpool are being linked with a move for Bukayo Saka from Arsenal as his contract negotiations drag on, but Jurgen Klopp has denied any further transfer moves this summer. With the arrival of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, Liverpool appear to have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season despite the departure of attacking trio Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino. And barring any drastic changes to his squad before the summer transfer window closes, Klopp insists the Reds are done on the transfer market. It is now clear that if the Reds made a move for Saka, they would have to wait until next season on Klopp's orders. But if Liverpool were to dive into the transfer market again this season, how could the Reds fare if they had Saka in their squad? To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2022 editor to ensure that Saka signs for Liverpool in the summer 2022 transfer window, using FM22 to run the simulation. Used for rotation rather than an impact sub, Saka produced some impressive numbers in his first season at the club, managing 44 appearances in all competitions. In those games, the Englishman managed 10 goals and three assists, with seven of the goals and two of the assists coming in his 28 league appearances. Saka struggled to assert himself in the Champions League despite starting nine of those games, but he was a regular in the FA Cup where he proved a key player in Liverpool's run to the final. Over the course of the season, Saka averaged a 7.37 rating per game, a very impressive total. Compared to his teammates, the 20-year-old had the third-highest average rating among attackers, lower than Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz but higher than Darwin Nunez. With Saka in Liverpool's squad for next season, the Reds had an incredible season in this sim, winning the Premier League and another major competition. The league title battle continued until the final day of the season between the Reds and Chelsea, with Klopp's side beating the Blues for the title by two points. Liverpool won the Premier League title in the 2022/23 season forecast. The Reds finished the season as the second-top scorer in the league behind Manchester City, but they had the best defensive record, conceding just 28 goals all season. Along with the league title, Liverpool won a monumental double as they once again hoisted the Champions League trophy. Klopp's side faced Chelsea in the final of the competition and a brace from Nunez and a goal from Salah sealed a 3-0 win for Liverpool. The Reds also reached the FA Cup final, although Man City won 3-0. Liverpool won the Champions League in the simulated season. The Reds started the season by selling Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, James Milner and Kostas Tsimikas while bringing in Fikayo Tomori and Jude Bellingham, ending the summer transfer window with a net spend of £56m. Saka improved in his second season with the Reds, recording more games, goals and assists. With an average rating of 7.37 for the second consecutive season, the 20-year-old has scored more than 3 goals in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League. The Englishman fared best in UCL as he recorded three goals and three assists in nine games. Saka also contributed four goals in the FA Cup and nine in the Premier League to round off an impressive season. Salah had another incredible season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions, as Saka once again finished the season as Liverpool's third-best attacker. Nunez and Diaz each scored 17 goals, making Saka the club's fourth-best goalscorer. At the end of the 2023/24 season, Football Manager 2022 put together a best overall Liverpool XI based on performances, stats and other metrics. Despite spending two seasons at Liverpool, Saka failed to make the top XI ahead of either Salah or Diaz. Saka never made the best starting XI in his two seasons at Liverpool, with the top three retaining their place in both seasons with Salah, Nunez and Diaz. With an improved Saka and the addition of Bellingham and Tomori, the Reds went even better in the league than last season, winning the Premier League title for the second straight year. It wasn't as close this time as Klopp's side finished second, 12 points ahead of Man City. Liverpool won the Premier League for the second year in a row. The Reds have 92 points from 38 games, four more than in the 2022-23 season. As well as winning the league by 12 points, Klopp's side were also the league's top scorer and retained the best defence. Liverpool won the FA Cup in the 2023/24 season simulation. The Reds were also eliminated in the third round of the Carabao Cup by a shock defeat against Nottingham Forest, but still managed to win a trophy in the simulation. After beating Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal en route to the final, the Reds beat Brentford 3-1 to lift the FA Cup trophy. Overall, this Football Manager sim predicts that if Saka were to sign for Liverpool, the Englishman could quickly become a key part of Liverpool's squad, delivering high-profile performances while helping the Reds push for trophies, but absolutely as a regular the first team. With Saka in the squad, the Reds won four trophies in two years, including two Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup. Would you like Bukayo Saka to sign for Liverpool next summer?
