Hotline could help understand motivation behind hate crimes but needs improvement - Oregon Capital Chronicle

Where does hate crime come from? From mass shootings to smaller-scale ones, a better understanding of the dynamics behind them can be a crucial element in managing them. (Author: Gardener)

The Bronx's Shane Burgos wows the UBS Arena crowd with his majority win at UFC Long Island

The Bronx native beat Charles Jourdain in his featherweight bout at UFC Long Island (Author: Gardener)

UFC Long IslandThe Bronx kid, who fights from Monroe, didn't disappoint the Elmont crowd as the lone New Yorker on the UFC Long Island fight card. Shane Burgos fought early and withstood a late attack from Charles Jourdain to win her featherweight bout on Saturday at the UBS Arena 29-28 29-28 28-28 by majority decision. "It was the best crowd, it was wild," Burgos said of the 16,979 fans. "When they said my name and then every time I went for the choke and got him on his neck, the crowd went crazy. In each of the first two rounds, Burgos used a body triangle to control Jourdain (13-5-1) and work towards submissions. However, in the third round, Jourdain unleashed his repartee, landing 115 of his 161 total punches. "Getting off the stool," Burgos said of the pain in his legs ahead of the third round, "it's going to be just mental toughness and determination for the next five minutes." Burgos (15-3, 8-3 UFC) has in the last fight Participated in seven of the 14 UFC events since the state legalized MMA in 2016 under his contract, and he has won all seven. After a unanimous loss to Lauren Murphy, Tate stopped slap-kissing her young children as she watched their fight live for the first time. Tate (19-9), making her flyweight debut in her third fight after five years of retirement, was the recipient of face punches and takedowns for three rounds from Lauren Murphy. In fact, Tate beat Murphy 111-110, but it was Murphy who did more damage, opening a cut under Tate's left eye that swelled to the size of a meatball in the second round. Murphy (16-5) was recovering from a crucial loss to champion Valentina Shevchenko last September. "I'm not done until I say I'm done, and I'm not done yet," Murphy said. UFC Long Island was the third event to be shown on ABC, which, like its usual broadcast partner ESPN, is owned by Disney. "We're definitely seeing a bang there in terms of total viewership, and we think it's a great way to showcase ourselves," UFC CEO Lawrence Epstein told Newsday at the all-viewing event .” The start of the preliminary rounds at 11:00 a.m. and the start of the main round at 2:00 p.m. on a summer Saturday could not keep the spectators away from the UBS Arena. The event raised $2.11 million and sold out, the 19th consecutive year for the UFC since it began traveling more frequently in April 2021, still amid the coronavirus pandemic. Elmont was the 10th city to host a UFC event so far in 2022, compared to six last year. S., but also our global fan base, you know, kind of since the pandemic. Epstein said, "I think he got tired of hitting me," Matt Schnell said after being wobbled several times in the second round before submitting Sumudaerji. An injured Herbert Burns was picked out of the octagon by his brother and carried off the arena floor , UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns after his second-round bout against Bill Algeo was stopped. After Ricky Simon dropped him with a right hook, Ricky Simon head-armed the previously undefeated Jack Shore -Triangle in the second round.Charles Oliveira and Insel m Makhachev will fight at UFC 280 for the vacant lightweight title.

The 5 biggest takeaways from UFC on ABC 3

Yair Rodriguez's unfortunate win over Brian Ortega and Miesha Tate's failed drop to 125 were among UFC's major storylines on ABC 3. (Author: Gardener)

ABCDustin Jacoby is one of my favorite stories in esports right now, and he kept the ball going with a first round KO of Da-un Jung in their light heavyweight bout. Jacoby (18-5-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) has gone unbeaten in seven straight fights since returning to the UFC for a second stint in October 2020. He originally started running in the octagon very early in his martial arts and was released after just two octagon appearances. It was at this point that Jacoby switched to kickboxing where he gained a wealth of techniques and experience that eventually brought him back to MMA. Now we see the polished version of Jacoby, who had little trouble bringing Jung's 15-fight unbeaten streak to a screeching stop. Jung was probably his most impressive win given the winning streak he had. The 205lb weight class is wide open for a guy like him and I would love to see him do against anyone in the top 10 because of his impressive level would give him a shot against anyone. It's clear that the hype before Ricky Simon vs. was directed at the wrong guy. So many people, myself included, were very high on Shore's potential after building a 16-fight win streak to launch his career, including five straight in the UFC. Simon (20-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) was a step up, but Shore showed signs he could match a proven top-20 bantamweight. He used his typical pressure in the first and early part of the second round, then the opportunity presented itself to put Shore on his feet. He followed it with a relentless pursuit of arm triangle submission and bowing to what had to be the pinnacle of his career so far. Simon also had a brilliant reputation from Sean O'Malley after the fight. It's not the first time he's been asked for this fight, and while I don't expect him to get it given he's a nightmare matchup for "Suga," I appreciate his courage. Lauren Murphy didn't hold back, playing spoilers on former UFC champion and women's MMA pioneer Miesha Tate's highly anticipated flyweight debut. Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) deserves plaudits for her performance in which she looked as good as ever after losing in the title fight to Valentina Shevchenko. She'll be a tough nut to crack for anyone in the top 5 in the division. But despite her triumphant unanimous decision win, the main talking point from that fight revolved around Tate (19-9 MMA, 6-6 UFC). After retiring from the sport for almost five years, Tate is now 1-2 since her comeback. She hit a roadblock at 135 pounds against Keteln Vieira and that led to this weight loss to fight Murphy. Tate said all the right things that went into the event. She seemed focused and rejuvenated to run in a new division, but she couldn't find a zone inside the octagon. We already knew that Tate has heart and badass. But with the sport evolving so much in the years she's been inactive, those traits will only get her so far. As previously mentioned, Murphy doesn't come easy for anyone, so there's no shame in this loss. But if Tate has had so little success against her, what happens as she moves up the rankings, or even more so at champion Valentina Shevchenko? Before we start writing Tate's next career story from esports, I'd like to see her back in this department. The initial weight reduction, a two-week postponement of the fight date, and a high-profile opponent all worked against Tate in this situation. On a map packed with eight finishes, the man who stood out from all the rest was undoubtedly Matt Schnell, who moved to the front of the field in the comeback-of-the-year race with a stunning assist from Su Mudaerji urged. After being lit on his feet to a standstill in the first round, Schnell (16-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) turned the tables in the wildest way as he rocked back at Mudaerji and included a triangle choke to seal the deal to seal. Schnell also needed the win in the worst possible way after enduring a turbulent year of back-to-back defeats, injuries and the death of his mother. The slide only seemed to get worse in this octagon, but as Schnell himself said before the fight, it only takes "a moment to change everything". He found that moment, and he should be commended for finding the courage and ability to find his way back into the fight and end it was an exclamation point. The crescendo of violence had perfectly settled into a much-anticipated featherweight headliner between contenders Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega. Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) and Ortega (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) were in the middle of a tactical and entertaining fight until it came to a wrestling match and Ortega's shoulder dislocated from his shoulder and a forced end of the fight. Everyone involved was disappointed as it really felt like a meaningful battle between two of the best. We have no information on Ortega's injury and the timeline he may need to recover, and given Rodriguez's activity over the past few years, I'm very resistant to the concept that he's waiting to put the fight back together. Dana White has been open to the possibility of an interim title fight between Rodriguez and Josh Emmett, but that should only happen if Alexander Volkanovski steps up and guarantees the winner from Charles Oliveira against. Whatever the climb does in the end, the result between Rodriguez and Ortega has caused a bit of chaos in terms of the way forward. Ortega vs. Rodriguez odds, predictions, lines

Andrew Gombas reveals his UFC Long Island tips and best bets for Yair Rodriguez vs. Brian Ortega (Author: Gardener)

OrtegaBrian Ortega says his two title fight losses have shown him what it takes to become a champion, and he intends to show what he's learned Saturday when he takes on his fellow featherweight champions in UFC Fight Night's main event Yair Rodriguez scores. The battle of the top 5 title-impact contenders will highlight the main card (2:00 p.m. ET) from the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Runner-up Ortega has seen his only UFC losses against current champion Alexander Volkanovski and former champion Max Holloway. both in title fights. Ortega says he still plans to wear the belt before retiring, but to earn a third title shot he needs to get past the dangerous and third-placed Rodriguez, who with a win could secure his first title bid. Caesars Sportsbook lists Ortega as a -160 favorite (risk $160 to win $100), while Rodriguez is a +140 underdog in the latest UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. Rodriguez Odds. In the co-main event, the women's strawweight contenders will take the spotlight as Amanda Lemos (-335) meets Michelle Waterson (+275). Before committing to UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. Rodriguez, be sure to check out MMA tips and betting tips from SportsLine fight expert Andrew Gombas. Matthews dominated from the start, scoring a stoppage in the second round to give Gombas supporters another easy winner. Anyone who has followed Gombas has already seen massive returns. Now, with UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. Rodriguez on the horizon, Gombas has studied the card from every angle and posted his best MMA picks. These tips are only available from SportsLine. Ortega (15-2-1) was widely viewed as a future champion when he joined the UFC eight years ago, and he fulfilled his potential by starting his UFC stint with a seven-fight unbeaten streak. He rose to the top of the UFC rankings but fell short in title bids against Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, who are responsible for his two losses in the promotion. Though his loss to Holloway in December 2018 was a one-sided one, Ortega nearly unseated Volkanovski at UFC 266 last September. In the wild back-and-forth affair, both fighters came close to finishing on numerous occasions, and the challenger appeared to have a fight-ending choke hold on the champion on at least two occasions. But Volkanovski survived and won a unanimous decision. The memorable war was named Fight of the Year by numerous media outlets, and Ortega saw his stock soar higher than it likely has after any of his victories. The 31-year-old Los Angeles native is likely to have a rematch with Volkanovski should he get past Rodriguez, although it won't be an easy task. Rodriguez (13-3-1) was at the top of the UFC rankings with promotion for much of his eight-year tenure. But a series of injuries has resulted in numerous long breaks between fights, and his mild-mannered nature has contributed to somewhat limited recognition from MMA media and fans. Still, the 29-year-old Mexican fighter showed what he could do in a classic five-round main event against Holloway last November. The former champion won a close decision but Rodriguez's performance was enough to keep him in the cover picture. You can only see who to pick at UFC Fight Night here. Sharing one of Gombas' UFC Fight Night predictions here: He assists Muslim Salikhov (-165) to earn a win over Li Jingliang (+145) in a clash of welterweight prospects on the main card. Jingliang (18-7) is an eight-year UFC veteran who has won in 15 appearances with promotion 10-5 while facing mostly upper-league competition. The versatile 34-year-old Chinese fighter climbed the rankings after a stretch in which he won 8-2 but in his last bout with a first-round loss to rising star Khamzat Chimaev, who has since reached No. 1 , a step down 3 in the ranking. Jingliang is now 14th. Salikhov (18-2) is a strong prospect having gone on to five straight wins after losing in his UFC debut, but the 38-year-old Russian fighter will step up in the competition against a ranked opponent on the main map. "I expect Salikhov and Jingliang to engage in a competitive batting affair. Jingliang is more of a traditional striker, while Salikhov is more creative with his attacks. I'm slightly biased towards Salikhov but expect this fight to result in a relatively close decision. "Gombas told SportsLine. See who else you can pick here. Gombas also has strong picks for Ortega vs. Rodriguez and other fights on the UFC Fight Night card. He also endorses a fighter who has "a huge power advantage " will have to emerge with a dominant win. These UFC Fight Night picks are only available on SportsLine. Who wins Ortega vs. Rodriguez? Only one welterweight in UFC history has more KO wins than Li Jingliang post UFC on ABC 3. (Author: Gardener)

Li JingliangUFC on ABC 3 proved to be one of the more entertaining cards of the year, with eight of the 12 scheduled bouts ending with a stoppage at the UBS Arena in Elmont, N. Charles Jourdain (13-5-1 MMA, 4-4-1 UFC) has suffered three of his four UFC losses by decision. Chelsea 'contact agent' as renewed interest worries Barcelona

Chelsea have reportedly rekindled their interest in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde as Barcelona look to move the transfer forward quickly. (Author: Gardener)

BarcelonaChelsea have reportedly rekindled their interest in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde as Barcelona look to move the transfer forward quickly. Kounde has been the subject of numerous transfer rumors this summer. It was reported that Chelsea had lost interest in the 23-year-old and that Barcelona looked like the likely next target. However, a recent report suggests Chelsea are trying to hijack a last-minute move to the Catalan giants. As reported by Caught Offside, Chelsea have reignited interest in Kounde. The report also suggests that the next few days will be crucial in determining where Kounde ends up. The club have already been extremely active in this window, with a string of big-name signings. They have also signed Andreas Christensen from Chelsea to bolster the defence. Barcelona are reportedly still keen on landing Kounde. And the news of Chelsea being interested again has only spurred the Spanish club on. Barcelona are now expected to move quickly so they don't miss out on the blues. The report adds that Chelsea have reconnected with their agent, suggesting they are also serious about a transfer. It had looked like Chelsea would miss a move for Kounde. In recent weeks, it looked like the club might be turning their attention to ex-star Nathan Ake instead. However, recent news that Chelsea have pulled out of the Ake race may have reignited Kounde's interest. And that's good news for Chelsea fans. The fact remains that the club is desperately looking for youngsters in the defense department. The move to Kounde proves Chelsea are serious about signing a big name to join their back line. Kounde would be an excellent recruit but it seems Chelsea still face stiff competition for his Barcelona signing. However, the fact that they are approaching agents of players like Kounde shows that Chelsea could still make some promising signings this summer.
