Clayton primarily supplies Ho-hum hometowns

The calm before the storm ... (Author: Gardener)

ClaytonI've unfortunately been ill for most of the past week, rendering me useless for anything that doesn't involve drinking Gatorade and sleeping sweaty on a couch - and I can only imagine it only makes my nausea worse would have to expose me more of this season. (Do you or someone you know suffer from ECE or Extended Clayton Exposure? Ask your doctor about Loveisblindia, the cure for bad dating show programming.) But maybe I should have checked out the latest episode of "The Bachelor." , while I was sick, because this week's hometown dates were TV's salty cracker: easily digestible blandness. We begin in beautiful Virginia with our first hometown date: Susie, who wants to find out if Clayton likes being choked. No, Susie doesn't take Clayton to see Virginia's famous red room and the episode doesn't become 50 Shades of Clayton. Instead, Susie takes him to Jiu-Jitsu class because Susie is a blue belt who sees her body as a weapon. I really hope you don't do anything to upset her - say HAVE SEVERAL WOMAN SEX AT SIMULTANEOUS DURING FANTASY SUITE WEEK - and end up being bent over and murdered, Clayton! For now, though, it's all fun and games as Clayton learns a move called "shrimp," because even with Shanae gone, this show just can't get enough shrimp talk. Afterwards, the two talk about how excited she is for Clayton to meet her family - especially her father, whom she loves dearly and who sets the standard for what she expects in a partner. Because of him, she became a "savage" (there's that word again; I sense a possible theme for a "Bachelorette" season... So he's a big deal — and luckily for Clayton, Susie's dad seems to like him the whole bunch. Phew, he must not have seen this season, however, her mother seems a little less convinced - especially after she asks Clayton if he loves Susie, and he replies with a whole word salad bar, all you have to do is search for the word "no". She reports to Susie to be careful with Clayton. Be careful - and be careful Clayton, because we've seen now that she could ruin you in a second, probably even in that princess dress from those shopping sprees earlier. From Virginia we head to Denver on Gabby's hometown date - and start a nature hike with a gift for Clayton: a knife Man, these women really want Clayton to know that his life en could end anytime if he messes up. Jokes aside, it's technically for bears - not me like every spawn along the trail. Instead, they take a peaceful stroll to Proposal Rock, apparently a traditional engagement spot that definitely existed before this moment and definitely wasn't created by Bachelor producers. If I were on a long nature hike, I would LOVE to stumble upon a hot tub in the wilderness. The two dry off and head off to meet the family - or most of the family as Gabby's father is staying away as his girlfriend has been diagnosed with cancer and with COVID still flying around he is safe with her. But in his place, we get Gabby's grandpa, who's the undisputed MVP of Hometown Dates Week. He cracks loads of jokes, laughs at Gabby's "sit on your face pillow" introduction from night one, and probably has pockets full of delicious Werther's Originals. I ALSO WANT TO KNOW THIS CHARMING MAN! Someone's booking him for the seniors' "bachelor's" season, which may or may not ever exist. Anyway, he's a treat, and over the course of the visit to his hometown, he eventually becomes a fan of Clayton. However, that's not the best thing that can happen on a date for Gabby. The climax would come towards the end of the night, when she had a surprise visit from her father, who pulled up and... actually love her? You know that iconic bit where the guy pretends to be a Christmas caroler and professes his love via cue card to a very married Keira Knightley? So yes, Gabby's dad does that, tacitly professing his love for his daughter and his hope for her and Clayton via cue cards... The guy does it in Love Actually because Keira's husband is literally a wall away and he deservedly doesn't want to get slapped in the face. But her father does it because... I don't know, but it's the thought that counts, and Gabby is very moved by the thoughtful gesture — so much so that, with her family's approval, she finally said the L-word to Clayton. And Clayton, very romantic... Nothing quite like opening up emotionally just for your significant other to say, "Thank you!" Appreciated!” replies. as if you just placed a Grubhub order. I know he's trying to do the right thing and not say "love" to multiple women... Speaking of chills, we're headed to Oklahoma City next for Serene's hometown date and, most importantly, a rise to the top of something crazy experience Tower of Secrets in the city. Yes, apparently out of boredom Oklahoma City built a tall tower of climbing obstacles and dizzying zip lines. And Serene decides to take Clayton there because if there's an issue in this week's hometowns, it threatens Clayton's life. Clayton survives the climb - but his dignity less as he sweats and screams and panics with every step while Serene navigates everything with an easy calm. Anyway, on the way down from Relationship Metaphor Mountain, Clayton and Serene meet her family - namely her brother, who is nervous about her because she has fallen in love with Clayton with all her heart without considering how she could very likely get hurt in the process End. He's no longer confident after Clayton explains to him that he's not ready to say he loves Serene just yet - mostly because he doesn't tell anyone during this process until he's reached his final persona. Still, the date ends nicely for everyone, with Serene saying she's in love with him and Clayton... CAN'T SEE HOW THIS PROCESS COULD POSSIBLELY TAKE A WORSE TURN! We end Clayton's hometown of Clermont, Florida with Rachel and her poor decimated vocal cords. Yes, maybe it was yelling into Jet Engines 101 in pilot class this week, or maybe she partied too much with being home with too many sandpaper margaritas, but Rachel's voice doesn't match the day's activities. Perhaps, considering the threat of alligators, bears, and snakes on her kayaking trip down a swampy river, her vocal cords were tuned into something. NUKE IT! NUKE IT FROM ORBIT! Luckily, they survive this encounter and make it to the traditional kissing tree - from the creators of Denver-based Proposal Rock - where the two make out on the branches, in the water and on the beach. However, after not becoming a spider pig, Rachel Clayton opens up about her family - most importantly her father, who is VERY SCARY and doesn't like ANYBODY. Imagine a less friendly Bane from Batman - that's apparently Rachel's father, or at least that's what "The Bachelor" wants you to think. WILL CLAYTON SURVIVE!? I mean even if they go to the house there is a warning sign on the front door that this place is R rated. Yeah, maybe rated an R for "really disappointing" — because as it turns out, Rachel's dad is just a stiff, intense guy. Which maybe we should have seen coming, because that's ALWAYS the M.O. of this show on hometown dates. There's always a date that "The Bachelor" is trying to make REALLY intense and REALLY scary, implying that something REALLY dramatic is about to happen... Rachel's dad says something about how he once asked his daughter, "Do you want me hit? him up?" about an ex-boyfriend — aka standard dad dialogue, nothing that makes it uniquely harsh or intimidating — and asks Clayton how he's dating four women and what he knows about Rachel's dreams but is running after it's all pretty smooth He doesn't give his blessings - because honestly, who would in this situation - but their conversation isn't as confrontational, and he ends up giving Clayton a hearty slap on the arm in token of acceptance. The Cthulhu -Spider from before was far more intimidating and notable. That aside, Rachel's dad could get a lot scarier when Clayton kicks Rachel out of the show at the rose ceremony at the end of the episode. But no, Rachel gets a rose along with Susie and - to a surprise, considering the life expectancy of contestants described as "stupid" or "silly" — Gabby. That leaves Serene heartbroken on the way home — though she considers how much chaos this is apparently threatening to become should she thank her lucky stars. Perhaps the biggest moment of the rose ceremony, however, comes when Clayton explains to our weekly cameo with Jesse Palmer that he's tired of feeling like he's not being completely frank with the remaining contestants — especially since he's actually falling in love with all the women. And given that the next episode is Fantasy Suite Week - and the clips we've seen of the impending cataclysm - I think we know what "his everything" can entail. There has to be a good balance between being carefree - like throwing around the L-word - and being unloving, refusing to reciprocate the strong emotions and feelings the women offer Clayton, only to walk towards a wall of emptiness bump smiles. However, I will make a confident prediction that Clayton won't find that happy medium in the next episode!

“Slow checkout is now knee-jerk in most businesses in India”

Credit and finance for MSMEs: The culture of slow payments extends to some of the country's largest firms, with one giant notorious for squeezing every last drop out of its hapless suppliers. (Author: Gardener)

India© Provided by The Financial Express Credit and financing for MSMEs: “It costs me $25 to wire the funds,” said my cousin who lives in the US. Transfer money to another account in the same country? Here in India we only provide a UPI address similar to an email address or even a mobile number if both parties are using the same payment app. Mobile and online payments were already on the rise in India before the pandemic provided an additional boost. But to say that India is miles ahead in terms of speed and ease of payments is only part of the story. Just because we can pay quickly doesn't mean we will. This is a contradiction at the heart of India's economy, where new technology and cutting-edge unicorns intersect with old ways of doing business. When this happens, both sides of the business agreement pay a price. It's not easy to categorize the circumstances in which the slow-pay culture rears its head. A consulting firm executive described to me his recent ugly experience with a supposedly forward-thinking VC-backed startup. Months of late and partial payments on a hugely successful project culminated in a "request" to lower fees after work was largely complete. The chance of future work was presented as a carrot - as if making the same money twice was a sweet temptation! The head of counseling said politely but firmly that they would no longer be customers. This culture of slow payments extends to some of the country's largest companies, with one giant notorious for squeezing every last drop out of its hapless salespeople. It's also not uncommon for unethical managers to charge a "clearing fee" to have their payments processed. I spoke to a few business people to understand the rationale for this reluctance to pay. People act like crooks and expect the same.” Slow checkout is knee-jerk in most businesses today. Receivables are meticulously screened and debtors tracked, while vendors are not prioritized unless they repeatedly call or threaten to stop essential work. To some extent, this is an extension of a culture that responds to the loudest voices while assuming the polite and patient have less pressing needs. We'd rather haggle over everyday payments - Rs.50 here, Rs.100 there - even if the same amount of time yielded a higher return if we spent it rebalancing our investment portfolios. Loss aversion—losses weighed more heavily than gains—is deeply ingrained in the human psyche over millions of years of evolution, with Indians embodying the phenotype of this trait to perfection. We just don't like the feeling of parting with money. This does not take into account the hidden costs of slow payments. In the example of the aforementioned consulting firm, the client team they worked with on a daily basis was frustrated by this unnecessary distraction. The time wasted on payment-related considerations, the deliberate slowing down of consultants' execution, and the stress on everyone all added up to an unquantified but significant cost - far greater than the paltry sums at stake. Other hidden costs that often appear in anticipation of payment delays are provider price inflation and overbilling. It must be said that the Indian business culture with payments is not uniformly dysfunctional. It must be said that the Indian business culture with payments is not uniformly dysfunctional. Most small businesses that are built on reputation place a high value on trust. Most small businesses that are built on reputation place a high value on trust. Some companies I've dealt with pay within a few days, and when that's not possible, vendors are given a pre-warning before any overdue notices are issued. Bad cash management? In the face of a real liquidity crisis or urgent need, the accumulated goodwill generates immense flexibility from providers who prioritize the needs of a quick payer over those of others. Subscribe now to Financial Express' SME newsletter: your weekly dose of news, opinion and updates from the world of micro, small and medium-sized businesses. There are other examples of good business practice in India. Coming back to the country after many years in the US and UK I was pleasantly surprised when a contractor who was renovating our office started work with a handshake with no agreement reached. I've been surprised more than once at the honesty of taxi drivers in Mumbai (though I must add, not in Delhi) and was struck by how often small contractors don't quote a price and just accept what I see fit. But with the rise from a small owner-managed company to a larger company, a mysterious Einstein phenomenon is spreading. Part of the solution may come from business schools, where classes place an emphasis on cash management that works on paper without an adequate focus on relationships and their long-term impact on the health of the business. Paradoxically, trusting relationships are as much a part of Indian business as handling cash. Our business schools would do well to emphasize the positive in our traditions. Because when relationships are broken, you also lose the joy of doing good work for a grateful customer who is happy to pay. Enjoy paying? That's an advance that no payment technology can match. About problems with the assembly of housings...

By David M. In a scathing commentary in the San Francisco Chronicle, Matthew Fle (Author: Gardener)

David M.In a scathing commentary in the San Francisco Chronicle, Matthew Fleischer writes: "The California Supreme Court on Thursday confirmed what most of us who live here already knew: neither a deadly pandemic that has exacerbated deep-rooted inequalities, nor the looming threat of a climate catastrophe, has managed to unseat NIMBY's vice grip on leisure and disposable income from the levers of state power." He continues, saying, "The judges codified the notion that more students on on campus are a form of pollution.” Fleischer traces this back to the environmental movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, which focused on a doomsday scenario of The Population Bomb. "'Population stabilization' was touted as a priority, which manifested itself in some good ideas (family planning and abortion rights) and some dubious ones (a de-emphasis on growth in big cities)," he argues. "In other words, for a highly sought-after migratory destination like California's coastal cities, 'not in my backyard' was seen as an environmentally friendly answer to the global problem of overpopulation. But the problem is, “Just because CEQA is an environmental law doesn't mean its effects are inherently good for the environment. And some growth -- like dense student housing close to campus and transit -- doesn't need to be extensively mitigated.” Meanwhile, veteran columnist Dan Walters sees Los Angeles' CalMatters as a microcosm of California's housing crisis. Recently HCD (Housing and Community Development) Los Angeles warned that they are not complying with state mandates to zone adequate land to meet their housing needs. The city would need to designate an additional 250,000 units and "do so in a way that provides much-needed housing for low- and middle-income families." Walters emphasizes, "Los Angeles is not the only country not meeting the quotas that the state sets every eight years - numbers that have risen sharply in the last cycle due to underperformance in previous years." Like Los Angeles are too many cities in the state have defaulted on this — including Davis. Walters notes, "However, if Los Angeles were to reduce its federal housing subsidy, it's doubtful it would have much of an impact since it appears unable to effectively spend the housing money it already has..." Five years ago, voters agreed $1.2 billion bond issuance proposal to accommodate the homeless or those at risk of homelessness. An audit by controller Ron Galperin found the city has 8,091 housing units "spread across 125 projects at various stages of development." Walters writes, "Thus, the $1.2 billion that Los Angeles voters have approved will, at best, house a small fraction of the city's estimated 41,000 homeless -- a number that is growing faster than the rate of construction." Walters writes, "The The Los Angeles experience framed in the two official documents—not enough land to live in and not enough money to make more than a small dent in the housing shortage due to high construction costs—affects other communities as well.” Indeed, he notes, “during the For example, closer to home in Yolo County on Friday, we received a news release that the county was finally finalizing its homeless count on a certain date time had completed. While the Vanguard reported in early January that the City of Davis is not compliant with the housing element, we have had no news from the city on that either. A recent letter from interfaith housing judge Davis shows how opaque this was. Ellen Kolarik notes, "Our group, like many others in Davis, took the opportunity to publicly comment on the document before it was submitted to the state Department of Housing and Community Development." She writes, "Given the city's assurances that Therefore, having completed the process and met its deadline, we were surprised and regretted to read in an article published in the Davis Vanguard on January 8, 2022 that HCD did not certify the City's housing element.” The City did HCD has not published any information on the matter on our municipal website, nor does it in any way acknowledge that our housing element has not been certified. It was only when we searched the HCD website that we found a December 8 letter that outlined the issues Davis needs to continue to address.” Completing HCD's satisfaction jeopardizes city programs that receive government funding. The city has since added a section to its Housing Element page. A revised housing element is expected to be available for public review in April or May 2022, where it will again be considered by the Planning Commission and City Council. I have real concerns that Davis is largely in the same boat as Los Angeles -- not enough land to live on and not enough money to meet the housing needs of low-income people.

Snow makes for a messy Monday morning commute before a cooler week follows

If you must drive during your Monday morning commute, plan to leave the house a little earlier than usual to allow for extra time. Because the falling snow moves in overnight and brings chaos to the region. (Author: Gardener)

morningROCKFORD, Illinois (WIFR) -- Two first warning weather days in 36 hours. Saturday for severe weather and Monday for snow accumulations. Folks, this is textbook for this time of year in the Midwest with these rapid temperature swings. Expect temperatures on Monday to be a good 30 degrees colder than Saturday as snow accumulates and affects morning commutes. A winter weather advisory will come into effect across the region at midnight and will continue through Monday noon. It's not going to be a big storm by any means, but the warning was only issued because snow will continue to fall during the morning commute. Plan ahead and allow some extra time on the roads as this snow has no problem sticking. The snow will move in from the southwest around midnight and will spread during the night hours. Snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1″ per hour are likely at times into the early hours of the morning. The snow will ease after the commute and will be completely gone just before the lunch break across the stateline. Heavier amounts closer to 5″ are possible, especially if you get far enough west and north of Rockford into Wisconsin. Guys we're taking any snow we can get because we're still in a snow drought. We'll close the gap a bit with Monday's snow. The second half of Monday remains cloudy and significantly cooler with highs only in the low 30's. We'll start clearing our skies at night, making for two sun-kissed days on Tuesday and Wednesday. These will be the nicest days of the week. A late week system will move into the region later on Thursday, which will bring some snow again into early Friday. More importantly, this upcoming cold front will bring our temperatures down to levels a good 15-20 degrees below normal for Friday and Saturday. That means we're likely to only see highs in the upper 20's on both days.

Working or studying outside of working hours can damage your motivation and enthusiasm for work

The traditional 9-to-5 work week has in many cases been replaced by hybrid working hours that fit your needs - but at what cost if you work too much? But working an unconventional schedule and checking in any time of the day, night or weekend is […] (Author: Gardener)

working hoursGood News Good Conversations Are You Using Your 8 Forms of Capital? From the social to the spiritual and intellectual, capital is more than money Good Gifts The heartwarming feel-good book we all need Getting in the way of your motivation and enthusiasm for work Working or studying in your “free” hours can hurt your motivation and enthusiasm at a cost if you work too much? However, according to a new Cornell study, working to an unconventional schedule and checking in any time of the day, night or weekend is not necessarily beneficial for the modern workforce. "Even if you're still working 40 hours a week, you're working during a time that you've mentally coded as free time or time that should be for a vacation - and that can make you suddenly feel that your job is less enjoyable," said Kaitlin Woolley, Cornells SC Johnson College of Business. "We felt that being able to work when we wanted could sometimes influence our attitude towards our work, too," Woolley said. So she and Laura Giurge, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the London School of Economics, set out to study the impact of working (or studying) outside of work hours on job satisfaction and motivation. In one study, researchers approached Cornell students studying in a campus library on President's Day. They reminded half of the participants that they were studying during a federal holiday; the other half did not receive this reminder. They then measured students' intrinsic motivation for their schoolwork and asked them how enjoyable, engaging, interesting, and fun they found their materials. Students who were reminded that the day was a public holiday reported that their work was 15% less fun. RELATED: 56% of small business owners believe remote work has made them better leaders, a survey says. They found that working on a holiday Monday was 9% less enjoyable compared to a typical Monday, even though they engaged in similar work-related activities on both days. In the third study, participants were interviewed on a Tuesday, without being reminded that it was a typical workday, then again on a Saturday. Some participants were reminded that it was Saturday, "a weekend day," while others received no reminder. Both groups reported lower job satisfaction on weekend days, although the effect was stronger in the memory group. Woolley and Giurge believe that part of this discrepancy has to do with the idea of "collective free time" - having free time when friends and family are also free. "The real benefit of having a weekend or holiday off is that not only do I have time off, but so do my family and friends," Woolley told the Cornell Chronicle. "And that's why we're suggesting managers set up a 'weekend shift,' so people feel like they're working with others?" The idea of "work-life balance" — setting boundaries between work and "play" times — has recently been a priority for many employers and employees. Woolley said it can be difficult for workers who feel pressured to commit to striking that balance. "Sometimes it's difficult for workers who don't hold positions of power, while I think managers have a responsibility to create that environment for their employees," she said. "I think people are becoming more aware of the importance of this and are shaping their jobs and their life choices to make it possible." Their findings were published Feb. 26 in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, entitled "Working While Non- Standard Work Time Undermines Intrinsic Motivation”.
