Sunday morning weather at your fingertips

Highs in the low 80's today with mostly cloudy skies. (Author: Gardener)

SundayLike yesterday, it will be a muggy day with scattered showers and splashes throughout the day. The chance of rain will increase this evening and tonight as a cold front moves into the area. This front will drive showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be severe, into east Texas tonight through early tomorrow. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a good portion of East Texas in its severe weather forecast for today. Make sure you get severe weather alerts when a clock or alert is issued. The best chance for severe weather is north of I-20. A really good explanation I've heard recently is something like "Severe weather events are low probability, high impact events". This means that the overall chance of a severe storm is low, but if one does occur the threats/hazards are serious. The front driving these showers and storms will keep our highs for tomorrow in the mid 50's and take this week's lows back into the 30's and 40's. The forecast for the coming days calls for continued rain probabilities and cooler temperatures. A second cold front will move through east Texas next Friday, this one stronger on the temperature side. At this point, it looks like an event with a low probability of rain; However, this front has the potential to push our lows into the low 30s. We're not forecasting a hard freeze as of this morning, but you'll want to make sure to check for updates this week as that could change. There's a saying I mentioned yesterday that I'm going to say again, something like "Never count a freeze until Easter in Texas." We'll have to wait and see how the forecast plays out, but either way it looks like we'll see at least a light frost by next weekend.

Damaging winds will be the main threat Sunday afternoon

Strong winds bring the warmest air of the year so far. (Author: Gardener)

SundayWhile many people look forward to heading outside to enjoy the warmest air of the year so far, we also have our sights set on a more active weather Sunday. A series of showers and downpours on Sunday morning will be followed by a dry spell early to late morning and into the afternoon. High wind warnings have been issued across western New York and east of Lake Ontario, with wind advisories stretching from the North Country to the Finger Lakes region. Gusts of 60 to 65 miles per hour have the potential to down branches and trees, damage power lines and cause power outages. A few showers with embedded thunder will develop Sunday afternoon in conjunction with a cold front. Developing strong storms could also lead to damaging gusts of wind outside the warning and notification areas. While there will be plenty of dry time to get outside and enjoy the spring-like warmth, it will certainly be a day to be aware of the weather. Luckily, the threat of noxious winds will lessen Sunday evening as cooler air moves in for Monday.

Nearly two months after Bob Saget's death, widow Kelly Rizzo shares an "incredibly grateful" message to her fans for helping her cope with the grief

Bob Saget's death in January took a huge toll on widow Kelly Rizzo, but she spoke about how much his adoring fan base has helped through the grieving process. (Author: Gardener)

Kelly RizzoAs might be expected, Bob Saget's death in early January 2022 sparked a wave of grief across pop culture, as well as among the comedian's million-strong fan base. Widow Kelly Rizzo - who wed Saget back in 2018 - witnessed firsthand how deep and far-reaching their love goes and sent an emotional message of gratitude to fans and new friends for supporting her through the grieving process. Kelly Rizzo has used her Instagram stories for a series of videos, in which she left a kind and lengthy thank you message for everyone who reached out to share the love. I am incredibly grateful and thankful to all of you for the love and support. I've had people who were strangers who have now become friends on Instagram. So many people have told me their stories of the loss they have gone through and they have poured out their hearts. And it's really nice that you tried to help me by sharing your stories. This whole grieving thing is something I've recently learned that a lot of people don't really understand. They don't really like to talk about it. Social media can obviously be a complete cesspool at times, which makes it all the more meaningful when hearing stories about how the platforms enable positivity and forward momentum. Indeed, friendships often grow out of life-changing events, both good and traumatic, so it's inspiring to know that Kelly Rizzo has forged some rewarding relationships since the death of Bob Saget. For that reason, having so much publicity focused on someone so fresh in the grieving process can always be either a blessing or a curse, especially for someone like Rizzo who hasn't been as much in the public eye as Bob Saget was in the last decades. Although I'm still very new to this world, I feel like I've had a bit of a crash course in it, especially when I'm doing it publicly. It adds a whole other layer that brings it to that other place that you understand things a certain way. I've done my best to even connect with people and respond to comments, and I'm just trying to tell everyone how grateful and grateful I am for everything you all have done to get me through this incredibly difficult time to help time. But I can assure you that the kindness you all showed was a small bright spot and made this a little bit easier. I'm sure many fans of Saget found glimmers of hope in Kelly Rizzo's posts filled with memories and photos in the weeks immediately following his death. And not just Rizzo, of course, as nearly the entire Full House/Fuller House cast ensemble shared many funny stories and touching anecdotes of loss and glorious throwback pictures. What really helped was seeing how much you guys love Bob because I don't think anyone has ever seen anything and seeing how much of an impact he has had on all of your lives is life changing and just immeasurable how much it means to all of us. Most importantly, I know how much it would mean to Bob. I thought he was pretty popular. I don't think he realized he was really making a difference to that extent. And I'm so grateful for that, so thank you all for showing me this. Not everyone is emotionally able to handle such widespread attention from people everywhere like Kelly Rizzo, and I have to think it has a lot to do with the fact that so much of this feedback is genuinely loving and respectful. That's the power of Bob Saget, so check out some of his best films and TV shows in his honor.

Why Deion Sanders Said Jackson State Football Is Leaving Southern Heritage Classic

Football coach Deion Sanders explained in an Instagram post why Jackson State won't be returning to the Southern Heritage Classic after 2022. (Author: Gardener)

Jackson State Football Is Leaving Southern Heritage ClassicThis year's Southern Heritage Classic takes place on September 10, but it hasn't stopped Jackson State soccer coach Deion Sanders from repeating that this will be the team's final trip to Memphis. During a video on his Instagram feed discussing Jackson State's 2022 schedule, Sanders said Wednesday that Jackson State would not be participating in the game after this season because he believes the school should be compensated more than she already is. He mentioned how the university is bringing seven buses for their band, four buses for the team, several administrators and, according to athletic director Ashley Robinson sitting next to him, 40,000 alumni to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium against Tennessee State. Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders wears a headset and answers questions at the 2021 Southern Heritage Classic. Between hotel lodging and dining, Sanders added that Jackson State doesn't make enough money from the game to cover travel expenses. We're going to stop all of this, just so you guys know," Sanders said. OPINION: Jackson State's Deion Sanders has "kicked in some doors," but where is HBCU esports going now? Under The Commercial Appeal contracts, both the states of Jackson and Tennessee will each receive $350,000 for each game from 2020 through 2024 from Summitt Management Company, which hosts the game each year. Jackson State and Tennessee State are responsible for travel, meals and lodging expenses "related to their football team, marching band and staff," while Summitt Management Company is responsible for all other expenses. Fred Jones, founder of the Classic, declined comment when asked what Sanders said, but offered a brief explanation. The game has been played every year since 1990. On February 1, Jackson State's general counsel sent Jones a letter stating that he was ending his participation in the game for the past three years after his conference reached an agreement addressing events conflicting with the game to stand . Ten days later, JSU reversed course and said it would play that season's game against Tennessee State, but not for 2023 and 2024. Jones told the Clarion Ledger on Feb. 2 that Jackson State broke the contract by he had terminated the agreement for the last three years. Tennessee State President Glenda Glover also said in a statement the treaty had been breached, while adding that Jackson State's decision was "an insensitive and irresponsible act" that would harm the Memphis business community. Jackson State responded on Feb. 11 that legal correspondence between the university and Summitt Management Company was leaked and "does not reflect ongoing communications between the parties." The university added it was never its intention to "abruptly cancel participation during the 2022 season." Southern Heritage Classic and the agreement between the parties.” Jones told Clarion Ledger on Feb. 11 that there had been no ongoing communication with the university prior to receiving the first letter. In a statement later in the day, he added he was pleased the game was still ongoing, but added that Jackson State "now wisely mitigates the damage for its breach of contract by honoring its legal obligation through 2022." Missing ship found in Lake Superior after 130 years

The 130-year-old wreck of the ship Atlanta, once thought to be lost forever, has finally been discovered at the bottom of Lake Superior. (Author: Gardener)

Lake SuperiorThe 130-year-old wreck of the ship Atlanta, once thought to be lost forever, has finally been discovered at the bottom of Lake Superior. The "wonderfully preserved shipwreck" lies 35 miles off Deer Park, Michigan, in the murky depths 650 feet below the lake's surface, according to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS), which announced its discovery Thursday. The GLSHS found the 172-foot barge after using sonar to map more than 2,500 miles of Lake Superior in collaboration with Marine Sonic Technology in the summer of 2021. Time to investigate to give context to the wreck explains the delay in announcing the Atlanta discovery, according to Corey Adkins, GLSHS communications and content director. The ship's masts were lost in the storm. The wreck shows where the masts splintered off. The Atlanta, loaded with coal, sank in a storm on May 4, 1891 while being towed by the steamer Wilhelm. The crew of seven loaded into a lifeboat and paddled for hours until they reached the Crisp Point Life-Saving Station. Adkins said the detailed accounts of the wreck came from survivor testimony obtained by the U.S. Life-Saving Service have been recorded. A toilet at the bottom of Lake Superior is part of the Atlanta wreck. Pictures of the shipwreck taken by a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) show the remains of a wheel, toilets and broken masts GLSHS, Shipwrecks that can be positively identified after this long time are rare. The wreck is particularly well preserved thanks to the cold waters of Lake Superior. "It is truly artistic and still beautiful after 130 years at the bottom of Lake Superior," Lynn said in a statement. Survivors said all three pylons snapped off during the storm, according to GLSHS, and images of the shipwreck support those claims. This photo of Atlanta's sister ship, Nivana, gives an idea of what was lost in the storm. However, the Atlanta nameplate remains intact and visible. The origin of the ship's name, which coincides with the state capital of Georgia hundreds of miles away, remains unclear. While Adkins said the museum is planning an exhibit about Atlanta, he explained that it's illegal to salvage anything from the wreck unless you have special permission. "This wreck is so deep compared to others we have found that we would like to leave this one undisturbed." Divers would hardly attempt to reach the wreck's depths and the GLSHS is not releasing the exact location at this time. There is a perfect beach for every week of the year.

Satellite images show deforestation of about a kilometer of Lake Kenyir

Forest department says no illegal logging, environmentalists ask if there's sanctioned construction. (Author: Gardener)

about a kilometerSatellite imagery of the area around Lake Kenyir shows deforestation within a kilometer of the lake within a protected zone. This comes as the state forestry government denies illegal logging in the area after viral video was shown of logging debris filling the river near the lake. Satellite imagery, accessible through the Global Forest Watch (GFW) dashboard, showed a loss of tree cover in the area over the past year, which activists say indicates deforestation. Malaysiakini's research found that some of the spots of tree cover loss emerged in May last year and were best seen by satellite in September. According to the GFW dashboard, the same area has lost around seven hectares of tree cover since 2019 - the equivalent of almost 10 football pitches. A general view of the Lake Kenyir region (see below) also shows other sites of tree cover loss within one kilometer of the lake. The GFW data do not give any reasons for the tree population loss, which could also be caused by natural phenomena such as landslides or fire. "We are suspicious of human logging (or) forest clearing activity as the observed bird's-eye pattern of green cover disturbance resembles previous patterns in logging areas," Damien Thanam, vice president of Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (Peka), told Malaysiakini. Therefore, the state forest office should clarify whether there will be built in the forest. “The state forest director was clear when he mentioned that there is no illegal logging at Kenyir Lake. But he failed to mention whether there are licensed logging or forest clearing licenses for resorts or government buildings. Kenyir State Park is a 30,000-acre conservation area that was established in 2018. Environmental group Rimba, which helped the state government create Kenyir State Park, said there are still areas outside of the 30,000-hectare conservation area earmarked for logging. “While we have worked for the Terengganu State Government to successfully protect part of the watershed as Kenyir State Park, many other forest areas there are still earmarked for logging. Earlier this week, the Terengganu State Forest Service and government clarified that the abundance of wood waste near Lake Kenyir is not due to deforestation but to heavy rains that caused a major landslide. A short video followed of fire and rescue workers crossing a body of water filled with what appeared to be hundreds of floating logs, with the Lake Kenyir sign in the background.

Where each team ranks according to the Super Bowl LVI

The Rams are Super Bowl LVI Champions and the 2021 NFL season is over. Where does each team stand before entering a crucial 2022 off-season? Check out our latest NFL Power Rankings to find out. (Author: Gardener)

the Super Bowl LVIThe 2021 NFL season came to a close Sunday night when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI. It was a career-defining win for Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who likely cemented his Hall of Fame status by winning the Lombardi Trophy for the first time. The Bengals had many chances to win the game, but the future is bright for Cincinnati. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase have the potential to be elite players for a long time. The Bengals rose from 2-14 in 2019 and 4-11 in 2020 for a chance to win the Super Bowl in 2021. Here's our post-Super Bowl NFL power rankings as the 2022 offseason kicks off. It's a good starting point for a franchise that needs to address pretty much every position on the list. Jacksonville also has the No. 1 draft pick for the second year in a row. Davis Mills played pretty well for the Titans as a rookie quarterback. Will he remain the starter, or will star quarterback Deshaun Watson rejoin the team after not playing in 2021? The best decision for the Texans would be to trade Watson for a huge package of draft picks that can help expedite the team's rebuild. Lions fans were probably happy that Matthew Stafford won a Super Bowl, but it was also a painful reminder of the terrible job the team did in surrounding him with enough talent to win from 2008-2020. Detroit has the No. 2 and No. 32 picks in the upcoming draft, giving the team some chances to add premium talent to the roster this offseason. The Jets' decision to pick BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the #2 pick in the 2021 draft hasn't looked good so far. Wilson struggled all year and didn't seem ready to be a beginning QB at the pro level. The Jets won't do anything in 2022 unless Wilson takes a big step in his development. Luckily for the Jets, they have two picks in the top 10 of round one. New York has its own #4 pick and Seattle's #10 pick on Jamal Adams' trade. The decision to pick Daniel Jones No. 6 in 2019 hasn't turned out to be great, at least so far. Jones wasn't bad, but he's stepped down since throwing 24 touchdowns as a rookie. He needs to make a significant move (or two) to prove he's the right quarterback for New York over the long term. Luckily for Jones, Brian Daboll is taking over as the new head coach. Daboll played a key role in developing Josh Allen into an elite quarterback in Buffalo. Ryan is still a good quarterback and deserves a chance to be back on a winning team before he retires - much like Matthew Stafford, who is leaving the Lions through trade to join the Rams ahead of the 2021 campaign. But the most pressing offseason question for the Falcons right now is the future of star wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley left the team in October to focus on his mental well-being. The Panthers' season was derailed by star running back Christian McCaffrey, who missed 10 games through injury. Durability is a primary concern for McCaffrey, who has only played in 10 of the Panthers' 33 games over the past two seasons. The goal for the Bears in 2022 should be to build quarterback Justin Fields after a mediocre rookie season and then surround him with enough talent at the skill positions as well. That second task becomes far more difficult when star wide receiver Allen Robinson goes free. On the field, the goal must be to find a long-term answer at quarterback. Will he stay in Seattle or be traded to another team? If he stays with the Seahawks, they need to surround him with a better offensive line and quick attack. Without a draft pick for the first round in 2022, however, this will be difficult. The Broncos' path forward is quite difficult given the strength of the AFC West. They were the worst team in a division with the Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers. Denver needs to come up with a long-term plan at the quarterback, either through the draft or the trade market. The Saints performed better than expected in 2022, considering future Hall of Famer quarterback Drew Brees retired before the season and his replacement Jameis Winston missed ten games with a cruciate ligament tear. Longtime head coach Sean Payton left the team, and star running back Alvin Kamara was arrested over Pro Bowl weekend in Las Vegas. Jonathan Taylor, running back sophomore, had a breakout season by leading the league with 1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. In that case, don't count on the 2022 Colts being a playoff-caliber team. Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is nearing his final year of contract. The Vikings had a pretty good offense in 2021, with cousins running back Dalvin Cook and wide receiver Justin Jefferson forming one of the league's best trios. Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has a year and $18.8 million left on his contract. Will the Browns sign him to a long-term contract, trade him, or let him run free? Still, it was a positive step forward for the franchise. The Eagles have plenty of firepower to make big improvements in the offseason, most notably three first-round picks (Nos. 15, 16, and 19 overall) in the 2022 draft. The Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores despite bringing the franchise to their first consecutive picks seasons since 2002 and 2003. The Cardinals started 7-0 but ended the season 4-6. Arizona wasn't at all competitive with the Rams in the NFC wild card round. Star quarterback Kyler Murray, who recently removed all mentions of the Cardinals from his social media pages, was pretty odd. The Raiders are about to begin a new era as former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels becomes the new Las Vegas head coach. The Chargers were so close to making the playoffs - they lost to the Raiders in their last game of the entire regular season. The retirement of Future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger leaves a big void at quarterback. The Steelers could draft a quarterback in the first round or trade a veteran. With a strong running game and strong defense, Pittsburgh only needs a top-notch quarterback to be a contender for the AFC again. The Bucs had an impressive regular season, led by veteran quarterback Tom Brady, who threw for 5,316 yards and 43 touchdowns at the age of 44. Brady has retired — at least for now — so now the Bucs need to find a new quarterback. Until then, it's difficult to rank this team among the best in the NFC. The Buccaneers are still a contender if a good quarterback is fielded. The Ravens' season was derailed because Lamar Jackson missed five games, including the last four. If Jackson is ready for 2022, the Ravens will once again be one of the hardest teams in the AFC to beat. Baltimore continues to have excellent running game and above-average defense. The Patriots made tremendous strides on both sides of the ball and returned to the playoffs after missing out on it in 2020. They were even the AFC No. 1 at one point and came pretty close to winning the AFC East. The decision to draft Mac Jones in the first round proved a good one as he was the top rookie quarterback by a decent margin. The Patriots need to surround Jones with more talent at the skill positions this offseason, preferably with a legitimate #1 wide receiver. Next Pats Podcast: Mac Jones on Pro Bowl Trash Talk, Josh McDaniels Quits & Offseason Improvements | Listen and follow | Watch on YouTube If Jimmy Garoppolo is traded, which seems fairly likely based on his year-end comments, the 49ers will officially begin the Trey Lance era in 2022. The Titans were No. 1 in the AFC and Mike Vrabel won Coach of the Year, but the season ended with a lone playoff result at home in a loss to the Bengals. Barring any significant changes, the Titans should continue to be the clear favorites in the AFC South next season. They're still a good team and this division is pretty weak. The Cowboys' season ended in agonizing fashion, but there is hope for the franchise. Starting quarterback Dak Prescott made a successful comeback after missing most of the 2020 season with a serious ankle injury. Rookie linebacker Micah Parsons and cornerback Trevon Diggs also became stars last season. The Cowboys have roster weaknesses to address, but this team should be back in the NFC title mix next season as long as Prescott is healthy. The offseason plan for the Bengals should be clear: upgrade the offensive line. Franchise quarterback Joe Burrow has taken a few hits since joining the league, and 2021 was no different. In Cincy's Super Bowl loss, he was sacked seven times, six of them in the second half. The Bengals have a bright future with Burrow and elite wideout Ja'Marr Chase, but a poor offensive line would jeopardize everything. The Packers' offseason will be dominated by quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams' future with the franchise. If Rodgers leaves, all the pressure will be on Jordan Love from 2020's first round to step in and lead the offense. The Bills almost upset the Chiefs in one of the most memorable playoff games of all time. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen had another MVP season and the defense remains one of the best in the league. All the ingredients for another stellar campaign in 2022 for the Bills are in place, they just need to find a way to beat the Chiefs in January after losing back-to-back seasons at Kansas City. The Chiefs inexplicably led 21-3 in the AFC Championship Game and lost in overtime. Kansas City's defense has many weaknesses, but as long as Patrick Mahomes is healthy, this team should accumulate enough points to have a chance of winning every game they play. The Rams' decision to go all-in via the trade market, taking on quarterback Matthew Stafford, pass rusher Von Miller and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, among others, worked brilliantly as the franchise won Super Bowl LVI. gave up several first-round picks to make those moves, and that lack of draft capital will be a big problem in the near future. But looking ahead to 2022, the Rams should still be among the top teams in the league, especially if Aaron Donald doesn't retire.
