' Dem, GOP caucuses Monday mark candidates, rally support

If there is an official start to this year's election season, it was Monday night when the candidates appealed to party members to support their campaigns and generate enthusiasm for the elections (Author: Gardener)

MondayBLACK HAWK COUNTY -- If there is an official start to this year's election season, it was Monday night when candidates called on party members to support their campaigns and inspire enthusiasm for November's non-presidential election. At district assemblies outside of 2022, party members will not vote for office. That happens on June 7, when elections are held for federal, state, and local candidates. The main deal on Monday was to allow voters to table platform resolutions telling state and federal parties what they want to focus on in the coming year. Elected officials and potential candidates made short speeches, presented policy proposals and motivational speeches for voting. Black Hawk County Democrats held meetings in Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Hudson, broadcast video streams and speeches from all three locations, and conducted party business as a single entity with the central hub at the UAW Local 838 Hall. Between 180 and 200 Democrats attended the meetings, said Vikki Brown, county party leader. The most prominent candidate was Liz Mathis, who is running for the right to run against Republican US Rep. Ashley Hinson in the new Congressional District 2, which includes Black Hawk County. Mathis spoke of her time in Cedar Valley, 18 years working at KWWL and teaching at Wartburg College, and growing up on a farm in Clinton County. "I decided to run when I saw Ashley Hinson getting some bad votes," Mathis said, calling out Hinson's votes against the Jan. 6 Commission, the Voting Rights Act, the Violence Against Women Act and Infrastructure Acts. "It's a huge, huge ground game this summer," Mathis said. We have to motivate people and energize this party so that people get out there and vote.” “We put forward candidates who are Republicans want me candidates and those candidates lost the last four general elections,” he said Hurst, noting that he favored Medicare for All and creating a "green economy" to combat climate change. Democrats serving in the Legislature spoke of all three locations, including Sens. Smith and Williams not seeking re-election. Black Hawk County Republicans held 10 conventions -- three in Waterloo, three in Cedar Falls, and one each in Evansdale, Dunkerton, Hudson, and La Porte City. District chairman Don Share didn't have a staff count, but said it was a decent turnout for a non-working year. No candidates or elected officials came to speak, he said. Platform decisions are considered at each party's district assembly. The Republicans will hold their March 12 convention at the National Cattle Congress Pavilion in Waterloo. Democrats will hold their March 26 at Central Middle School in Waterloo.

Mindy's Monday Motivation - Blog Post #34 - You are not alone

The latest news about Miss USA and her leap from the 60-story apartment building has put depression and suicide in the spotlight for the past week. Many of us have known someone who felt so hopeless that there was no turning back. (Author: Gardener)

MindyThe latest news about Miss USA and her leap from the 60-story apartment building has put depression and suicide in the spotlight for the past week. For those who are suffering, please know that you are not alone. Okay, sorry, the scientist in me can't help but point this out. Truly you are not alone for there is someone who loves you more than you think who will miss you so much when you are gone. There's someone who relies on that simple interaction you've had with them that you don't even notice. Your colleague with whom you talk about work and sometimes other things every week. Your friends with whom you hang out every once in a while or sometimes every day for a whole month. Your cousin who was hoping to end up on your couch. Your neighbor, who is happy about this wave every morning when you get the newspaper from the lawn or go to the mailbox. People for whom your simple presence makes a difference in their lives. It's like the butterfly effect or a wonderful life effect. However, you want to think about it, you are not alone in feeling like you are alone. There are many who feel the same way. If you reach out, you will find a tribe of others who can relate to how you are feeling. Above all, there is always hope. Don't lose hope because time is the best resolver. Sometimes I feel like we're all bipolar when we go from happy moments to sadness. You won't be happy all the time, but then again, you won't be sad all the time either. So don't lose hope. Things will change. everything will be better And if you can't take the pressure, please talk to someone. Social media in recent years has allowed us to connect with friends and family and even make new friends and connections. However, it also caused us to only see the positive highlights in other people's lives and at times to feel less secure and inadequate in our own lives. We see other smiling faces and sometimes feel like we're not doing enough in our own lives. Just know it's not a competition. They just want to share some happiness in their world with you in hopes that it shreds some happiness in yours. The key is to see things positively and not let negativity get you down. There are many different ways of looking at things in this world, but a positive attitude will always lead you to something good. If you see Facebook as a way to connect with friends and family or make new connections, then it can enrich your life. I have to admit that I've walked away from Facebook for a while over the last few years. Too many political debates and different COVID perspectives made it a bit difficult for me to open Facebook. I found a few groups on Facebook. I've also made new hiking friends and enjoy meeting new people who share my interests. Everyone has a story to tell and I can hear it as we hike. These are all positive benefits from my point of view. There are people who have posted about their personal issues, like the death of a loved one or a divorce; few people would read in full. Some might post a supporting note, but that's about it. However, there are things we can do to show that we care about each other from afar, in spirit or in geography. I try to comment or private message those I know who are grieving. A little note goes a long way to comfort the heart. So, even if you don't know someone well, you should take the time to send a message. Sometimes people just want someone to talk to and listen to. Of course, please do not compromise your own mental health for the benefit of others. The key to being able to support others is to be able to take care of yourself first. If something happens to you, who can support you? The first rule of a caregiver is to make sure you take care of yourself. Take care of yourself mentally first. There are many websites that discuss ways to strengthen yourself mentally and emotionally. They gave pretty good advice from my point of view, so check it out if you have a bit of time. Almost every company also has support for you if you need a little more professional help. So don't hesitate to take advantage of these benefits. And when all else fails, go hiking. Okay, this is a shameless plug of mine because I love hiking. Maybe one day I'll tell you my story about what got me into hiking and even Everest Base Camp. Until next week everyone stay strong and reach out to others whether you need someone to talk to or someone needs you.

WWE Elimination Chamber Picks for Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and Full Match Card

WWE travels to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday for a premium Elimination Chamber live event, hosting WrestleMania on March 2nd and 3rd. (Author: Gardener)

WWE Elimination Chamber PicksWWE travels to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday for an Elimination Chamber Premium live event that will set up WrestleMania on April 2nd and 3rd. Characterized by championship bouts and the event's eponymous match, the show will give WWE fans a taste of what to expect in the Immortals showcase. Will Roman Reigns end Goldberg's run in WWE? Can Bobby Lashley defend the WWE Title against five top contenders including Brock Lesnar? Will Lita reward her return with gold? Find out now with these predictions for the extravagance. Bobby Lashley defeated Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble thanks to an assist from Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns. While most of these competitors feel like they have something worthwhile to do as the Road to WrestleMania progresses, this feels like a match that boils down to Lesnar and Lashley. As much as it belittles the credibility of the title, WWE seems content to play a hot potato with the WWE Championship ahead of the biggest show of the year, and that should continue here. With more prestige and higher stakes required to justify Reigns vs. Lesnar in WrestleMania's Main Event, look for The Beast to reclaim the title here and prepare for a rare Title vs. Title match on April 3 Match on The Grandest Stage of Them All. Goldberg fails to defeat Roman Reigns to win the Universal Championship. Reigns has amassed one of the most historic championship runs in the company's history, and even the most die-hard, nostalgic bosses at the company aren't foolish enough to end it just to prop up a guy whose contract is up and un- Ring Days are past their sell-by date. Reigns wins a short, high-impact match that gives the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the star power it loves and ensures The Head of the Table remains at the top of the WrestleMania map. Lita's return to WWE has been fun so far, and her opportunity to dethrone Becky Lynch in Saudi Arabia for the Raw Women's Championship makes for a celebratory match that could easily top a show in the US. That won't happen on Saturday, but expect a hilarious match between two pioneers in women's wrestling. Lynch will win, there's no doubt about that. Can the fiery redhead take it to the extreme one last time and channel the high-flying badass that caught the attention of the wrestling world 20 years ago? Just a guess, but all signs point to "yes". Ronda Rousey and Naomi vs. Charlotte Flair and Sonya Deville Ronda Rousey came to Naomi's aid on Friday night's SmackDown, organizing a blockbuster tag team match against Women's Champions Charlotte Flair and Sonya Deville. A match that would be one of the hottest in any arena in the States It will be interesting to see how the Saudi fans react. Cheers and taunts aside, this will also be Rousey's first taste of extended in-ring action since her return to the Royal Rumble. Expect her to be on the apron and getting the hot tag from her partner before exploding into the match and ultimately taking out Deville, who sets her up as a force of nature that Flair will have to contend with if she wants to maintain her title reign at WrestleMania . The intrigue surrounding the mystery participant in Saturday's match at the Women's Elimination Chamber certainly helps, but it still feels like a foregone conclusion in a fight. Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, Nikki ASH, Doudrop and Liv Morgan are currently scheduled to compete in the match for the Raw Women's Championship. No matter who that final competitor is, it feels a lot like The EST are going to win. The story is already there: Belair was screwed out of the Raw women's title at SummerSlam by a returning Lynch who capitalized on shock and awe to win the gold in just seconds. Since then, she's been clipped and beaten by numerous underhanded tactics routinely kept within reach of her title by Big Time Becks. At WrestleMania, Belair should have an opportunity to right that mistake, starting with a big win on Saturday. This is not his victory. McIntyre is well on his way to becoming a post-WrestleMania program for Roman Reigns, and to be that, he can't afford to lose out here to Mr. Dad Joke himself. McIntyre wins this one decisively and, hopefully, ends a feud he hated in the first place. The Usos needed fresh new opponents, so it was nice to see WWE push The Viking Raiders towards the SmackDown Tag Team Title fight. Except that the creative who's been accompanying Erik and Ivar ever since has been a little suspicious, to say the least. They weren't portrayed as a real threat for the title, and Jimmy Uso's rather dominant win over Erik a few weeks ago tells you everything you need to know about how WWE officials view the challengers. The Usos are as hot as two-thirds of The Bloodline and look set to continue their winning streak with a successful title defense in one of the night's foregone conclusions.

Bette Midler claps back at Virginia governor after state speech

The governor of West Virginia asked Bette Midler to kiss his dog's butt during his state of the state address. (Author: Gardener)

Bette MidlerUPDATE (1/20/2022 @ 9pm EST): Bette Midler responded to Jim Justice by retweeting a fan's clapback. Right next to it is the butt of Jim Justice's dog," read the tweet, along with a picture of the West Virginia governor holding his dog's butt up in the air. ORIGINAL STORY: West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice fired back at Bette Midler for over a month after she insulted the Mountain State (partly because of its Sen. Joe Manchin) in his state speech on Friday, Jan. 28. The 70-year-old governor proudly held up his dog and, to much applause from those in attendance, urged the 76-year-old icon to kiss his butt during the speech. OMG. WV Gov. Jim Justice picks up his pooch during his state speech and turns her to face the camera as he says, "They've told every bad joke in the world about us...so from that vantage point, Babydog is telling Bette Middlet and all of them out there." , kiss her, Hiney.” pic.twitter.com/bdJlOXhtez The governor's dodgy message to Bette came amidst him as he celebrated the accomplishments he'd seen in West Virginia during his tenure. They never believed in West Virginia," he said. "They never believed that the Nucor or the Green Power or Owens and Minor. "They've told every bad joke in the world about us, and from that point of view, Babydog says to Bette Midler and everyone out there, kiss her, Hiney!" he said. By the way, here are the state rankings of all areas and agencies for which the so-called "Governor" of the WVA, #JimJustice, is responsible. Judging by those rankings, I'd say his dog's butt would make a better governor than him! pic.twitter.com/TJAB3oj5VV Of course Bette reacted. She retweeted many people who attacked the governor, but she ended her response with a tweet that chronicled various rankings for Virginia on issues like healthcare, infrastructure, education, opportunity, and other things compared to other states. "Judging by those rankings, I'd say his dog's a** would make a better governor than him!" she wrote. The governor's call for Bette didn't come entirely out of the blue. He appeared to be responding to a tweeted attack the hocus pocus actress wrote in December when she attacked WV Sen. Joe Manchin for his blocking of various bills that other Democrats had backed. "He wants us all to be like his state of West Virginia. Bette later apologized for the tirade, noting that her attack was aimed at the senator rather than his constituents. "I apologize to the good folks at WVA for my recent outburst.

Donald, Rams' Defense Join Kupp as MVPs

Cooper Kupp was named the game's MVP. But he doesn't win it without a lot of help from his friends. (Author: Gardener)

RamsThe Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl champions because Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp made the winning plays when it mattered. But let's be honest: you didn't win this game. It put on plays all night, sacked Cincinnati's Joe Burrow a record seven times — including five in the third quarter — and handcuffed the Bengals long enough for Stafford and Kupp to come to the rescue. Stafford threw the game-winning touchdown pass. Kupp managed the decisive catch. And the Rams delivered a 23-20 win that saw Kupp named MVP of the game. But that can't be done without Aaron Donald. If they don't choke Burrow in the second half - including a sack that left him twisting his right knee and being helped to the touchline - there's no game-winning drive or Stafford-Kupp highlight tape. And what they say is that the Bengals were 3 to 14 on third downs and 1 to 3 on fourth and haven't scored on their last five possessions that ended like this: punt, punt, punt, punt and downs -- with Donald makes the two biggest stops on Cincinnati's final drive. The first was a tackle that saw Samaje Perine running back on a third and 1 at the Rams '49. Time remaining: 43 seconds. The second was his hit on Burrow on the next snap, spinning the quarterback onto the turf when Burrow frantically threw the ball in the air to avoid a sack. I dont know. But the Rams couldn't walk. They lost wide receiver Odell Beckham in the first half to a knee injury. They played without tight end Tyler Higbee, their second best receiver. Stafford had a few interceptions. And seven of their 13 possessions, including the last kneel down, were three games or fewer. Undermanned and in a funk, they struggled to score 16 points in the opening 58.5 minutes. But then Stafford and Kupp led them on a 15-play 79-yard drive that included a 7-yard Kupp run on a fourth-and-1 conversion and ended with Stafford hitting Kupp for a 1-yard TD hit. Kupp, the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year, caught Stafford's last four completions -- including one for 22 yards in a drive reminiscent of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice dissecting the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII. "All of these things are really team awards," said the game's MVP. "You're not a successful receiver if all the other 10 guys on the field aren't doing their job. He doesn't get the award...and the Rams don't win the game...without the Rams defending. It kept Burrow and the Bengals at bay the entire time, giving Stafford and Kupp time to figure things out. After the New York Giants defeated New England in Super Bowl LVI, their second straight win over the Pats, I spoke to the Giants defensive end and said I learned a valuable lesson from him and his teammates: Great passing -Rushers boast great quarterbacks. I experienced it again in Super Bowl LVIII. Then in Super Bowl 50. Don't say you weren't warned. The Rams did it this season. It took them 33 years to get back into the Super Bowl... and then this happens. They've come that far three times in their 54-year history. They lost three times... with a total of 12 points. 4. Don't win the Super Bowl coin toss. That's eight straight games in which the team that won it at a Super Bowl lost the game. 5. White jerseys are the right jerseys. Teams in white jerseys have won 18 of the last 21 Super Bowls. 1. Losing a Super Bowl is hard enough. But the news gets worse, fans of the Bengals: Unless Tom Brady is your quarterback, history tells us the Super Bowl loser won't be returning the following year. Since the Buffalo Bills appeared in Super Bowl XXVIII, it has only happened once - in Super Bowl LII, when New England and TB12 returned to defeat the Rams. Yes, I know the Rams are having their first ever Super Bowl as the LOS ANGELES Rams, and it's good for them. But they don't have Brady either. Not in this millennium, you don't. The only team to do so was the 2003-04 Patriots, quarterbacked by You Know Who. Aaron Donald could retire? We have a new leader in the offseason Twitter feed. Amid reports he could leave if he wins, Sean McVay said last week that he was "committed to this team and this coaching." I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like outright denial. 5. Did NBC's Cris Collinsworth actually say, "I don't know if I've seen better than Matt Stafford and Cooper Kupp in a pressure situation?" He did. Someone rewound the video of Super Bowl XXIII with the 49ers' Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. If only Collinsworth were there, he would know. Oh wait... 6. Or maybe we could give him a few dozen Tom Brady? He seemed poised to have a big game and then... phew... he was gone, sidelined with a knee injury that looks serious. Watching him on the sidelines, I wasn't sure which was worse: the Rams missed him or he missed playing. All I know is that it was a great loss for both of them. In half a season with L. 8. Also, feel for the nameless dude who would have won $120,000 at BetMGM had Aaron Donald been named the game's MVP. He finished second. 9. Joe Burrow was sacked 19 times in this year's playoffs, including nine times in a game (Tennessee) and seven times on Sunday. Memo to Bengals' Mike Brown: Use offensive linemen who can pass protection. Quick question for 345 Park Ave.: How on earth can the league's best officials — because that's who edits Super Bowls — blow an obvious facemask penalty like those blowing the 75-yard burrow-to-tee Higgins TD in the first game produced the second half? "It was a contested catch," replied referee Ron Torbert, "and the crew didn't see any contact going as far as pass interference." I'm sorry. There was no "grab and twist," Torbert said, that warranted a face mask penalty. Watch the replay, Ron. Better yet, New York will. Coming soon to a cinema near you: Jordan Peele's "Nope" starring Eli Apple. The Rams' Jalen Ramsey said last week he was "the best defenseman in the National Football League." Check the game tape. He returns to the NFL after nearly two years, taking over to safety for a jaded Rams secondary and walking away with a ring in his final game. It doesn't get any better than that. With Super Bowl ads reportedly costing $6.5 million for a 30-second spot, someone should be asking for refunds. With rare exceptions, commercials have been as captivating as the Rams' running game. No Ram should be happier - no, happier - than Rams punter Johnny Hekker. He gambled away a botched extra point that put his team in a precarious position where victory was ultimately at stake. Instead of a field goal to tie, the Rams needed to get the touchdown to win. 1. Arizona Cardinals. For 54 years, teams whose home stadiums hosted Super Bowls never made it to the NFL championship game. Then Tampa Bay broke that hex in Super Bowl LV. Now the Rams are doing it in Super Bowl LVI. And both won. So where is Super Bowl LVII? You guessed it: State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Az., home of the Cards. 2. Raheem Morris, Rams defensive coordinator. He's the guy who made the second-half adjustments that rocked Burrow and the Bengals. "He's a big brother to me," said the Rams' McVay. Congratulations. Big brother just got you a ring. 3. Rams coach Sean McVay. A year ago, he championed Matt Stafford and convinced GM Les Snead to dish out multiple first-round picks (and quarterback Jared Goff) to bring him in from Detroit. He's also the prodigy who scored 19 points in two Super Bowls until the last Rams' final touchdown. 4. Cincinnati run defense. The Rams ran 23 times for 44 yards, averaging 1.9 per attempt. They were quarterback Matt Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp. 5. Rams' Quarterback Matthew Stafford. Until he showed up in Los Angeles, he was known as a quarterback who produced lots of yards, lots of touchdowns, but not many wins. He was 74-93-1 in 12 years in Detroit, including 0-3 in the playoffs, and only had four winning seasons. Well, he's been 4-0 in the playoffs, beat Tom Brady, won a Super Bowl and some are wondering if he's Hall of Famer worthy. It's a game. Joe Flacco was also 4-0 in the playoffs and was Super Bowl MVP. 1. Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow. Not only did he suffer his first playoff loss since an Ohio state championship game; He literally suffered from the experience, being sacked seven times - including once where he was injured when his knee was twisted. Burrow became the first quarterback to win a Heisman and a Super Bowl in a minute, but no problem. He has plenty of time to get there. Unfortunately, he picked the Bengals to win. Had he won, he would have taken home $7,708,800. Sorry, but you can't lock him up, mano-a-mano, with Cooper Kupp and the game at stake. 4. Lawn in the SoFi Stadium. There is no artificial turf in Vegas. The same applies to Arizona. But there is in the $5 billion Rams house, and it cost Odell Beckham a Super Bowl. He suffered a knee injury in the first half when his foot caught the grass while reaching for a pass. He never played again, and that sparked an outcry from players past and present when the 49ers' Deebo Samuel tweeted, "Turf should be banned @NFL." I agree. At the start of the game, the teams winning the turnover bout were 38-5. With two interceptions, the Bengals won 2-0 on Sunday. Update: Teams that win the Turnover Battle are now 38-6. Matthew Stafford is one of only three quarterbacks to throw 40 or more TDs in a season and win the Super Bowl this year. Tom Brady in 2020 and Kurt Warner in 1999. The Rams averaged 1.9 yards per rush. According to ESPN Stats & Info, they are the fifth team in Super Bowl history to average fewer than two yards per carry. They're the only ones who win. The Rams were 14-1 that season when Cooper Kupp received one or more TDs. "I don't know, man. He did everything that can be done.” — Rams' linebacker Von Miller on Aaron Donald's potential retirement. "I didn't get out." — Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow on the extent of his knee injury. "We believe we have a very special group that will continue to grow and fight to return to games like this." - Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor. (Tie) Rams' DT Aaron Donald and WR Cooper Kupp. Kupp made the game-winning catch, but it was Donald who took over the second half - seemingly full of energy as he shoved Burrow wide and then mistook it for the Bengals' touchlines. As a doubles and trebles team, he finished the tournament with a total of four tackles, two sacks, three quarterback hits, two tackles for losses and a Super Bowl ring. "Guys like him are why you train," said Rams coach Sean McVay. Kupp was named MVP of the game, the second wide receiver in the last four Super Bowls to win the honor (Julian Edelman, Super Bowl LIII), but Donald deserved it just as much — if not more.

Rams go for a last-minute touchdown for an exciting 23-20 win over Bengals

Cooper Kupp's second touchdown catch of the game at 1:25 hands gives Los Angeles a dramatic victory over upstart Cincinnati. (Author: Gardener)

RamsThe Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl 56 Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Quarterback Matthew Stafford found star receiver Cooper Kupp for the go-ahead, playing 1-yard touchdown with 1:25. Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald made sure Cincinnati wouldn't as he beat Burrow 4th and 1 to seal the win with 39 seconds remaining. "It's poetic that offense can find a way and Aaron can end it," head coach Sean McVay said. It was the Rams' second Super Bowl title in franchise history, the first coming in 2000. With a strong presence of Rams fans in the crowd of 70,048, the team became only the second team to win the Lombardi Trophy at its home turf won. The win confirmed the Rams' all-in approach, at least in the short term, as the club had traded a number of draft picks to bring in Stafford, outside linebacker Von Miller and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for their championship run. Stafford completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He said the "up and down" game was similar to the Rams' inconsistent season, and maybe they even listened to Stafford's high-octane but error-prone performances in a season with 41 touchdowns but 17 interceptions. And yet, like his wave in the regular season, Stafford built a cushion early and delivered late when it mattered. The Rams were first on the board, Stafford hitting Beckham from the 2021 on a 17-yard touchdown 6:22 in the air to play in the first quarter. He struck again when Kupp faked a block before clinching an 11-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Beckham attempted a crossing route, similar to one he had previously rushed up, for a 35-yard gain. Facing third and ninth, with 3:54 into the first half, Beckham dropped a pass and clutched his left knee. Stafford later prayed in the drive for third and 14th, and Bengals safety Jessie Bates III was intercepted in the end zone instead. Cincinnati failed to convert before halftime but needed just a game to unload in the third quarter. Leave it to Burrow to drop a bomb on receiver Tee Higgins on the left touchline, and Higgins capitalized on a 75-yard touchdown after Rams All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey lost ground on a play. Ramsey seemed to have expected a flag for a protective mask. Bengals cornerback Chidobe Awuzie stole a tipped pass in the following game, Stafford's second interception in a short span. The Bengals extended their lead with a field goal, their 4-point lead almost enough to sustain a late-game punting fest. But seven sacks, without Donald's closing summary, proved too much for Burrow and the Bengals to overcome. Burrow completed 22 of 33 passes for 263 yards, including the 75-yard touchdown. But Stafford and Kupp underlined the performance late. Burrow and his Bengals didn't respond. Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon hit a game-high 72 yards with 15 attempts and completed a lone pass for a 6-yard touchdown against Higgins on a trick play, Cincinnati's first result of the day. Mixon's ground play almost doubled Los Angeles' overall performance, the Rams stuttering at just 1.9 yards per attempt and 42 total yards in the win. Miller and Donald each sacked Burrow twice, with the Bengals' offensive line holding up against the Rams early on but ultimately faltering in what seemed to be the game's crucial mismatch. Burrow and Stafford each hobbled off the field on points, Burrow holding off seven crushing sacks to cap off an postseason that often started with him on the ground. And with one last chance three minutes down, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald delivered the game-winning sack. Stafford had interrupted his performance. Rams head coach Sean McVay became the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl at 36. He was 36 when the Steelers won the 2009 Super Bowl with a 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals, but was about 10 months older than McVay. Despite the Bengals' inspired year-round turnaround — they finished 2020 4-11-1 and this year 10-7 and won the AFC North title ahead of their postseason run — they remain one of 12 NFL franchises to never have one Super have won bowl. The glory of the Rams' thrilling victory over the Bengals in Super Bowl 56 still flows through the hearts of the victors. And now everyone else in the league is renewing a dream of hope that they will win Super Bowl 57 in Glendale, Arizona. On Sunday night, Tipico Sportsbook revealed its future book odds for next season, with the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs listed as +650 co-favorites. Van Jefferson sped through the tunnels of SoFi Stadium after the game, his backpack slung over his right shoulder and his Super Bowl jersey on his right hand. The Los Angeles Rams wide receiver was fresh from a 23-20 win in Super Bowl 56. Samaria was determined to attend her husband's Super Bowl even at 40 weeks pregnant, she told The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue. Samaria made it to the kickoff at the SoFi Stadium. Former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford not only led the Rams to a 23-20 win with a patented come-from-behind win, but the Lions' additional first-round draft pick, which came from LA via the Stafford trade, depended on game result. With the Rams clawing out the win, the Lions have the final first-round pick and now have three top-34 picks. – Joe Burrow played well enough to win his first Super Bowl. That setback, a 23:20 hit against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium, was not to be blamed on Burrow. It's just hard to win when you can feel the hot breath and stiff punches of guys like Aaron Donald, Von Miller and A'Shawn Robinson all game long. Burrow was sacked seven times and still nearly led the Bengals to a Super Bowl triumph in what would have been a first in franchise history. Give Joe Cool the protection that gets the most out of a quarterback who's certainly good enough to almost win a Super Bowl. Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Eli Apple may have gained the upper hand over the Kansas City Chiefs after beating them in the AFC championship game, but Chiefs players may have gotten the last laugh after some blamed Apple for his performance at the 23-20 Bengals' loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 56. In the AFC title game, Apple pulled off a crucial game late in the first half that proved crucial in Cincinnati's 27-24 win. Two weeks later, it seems like numerous Chiefs players have not forgotten those comments, as Apple was called out late in the fourth quarter for a pass interference and reported on Cooper Kupp during the game-winning touchdown pass. Kansas City wide receiver Mecole Hardman reminded Apple that he has something the Bengals defenseman doesn't: a Super Bowl ring. The Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl, but safety Taylor Rapp secured a different kind of win after the game: winning a fiancé. When the Rams celebrated the 23-20 win with their families on the field, Rapp was with longtime girlfriend Dani Johnson. After the two hugged, Rapp got on one knee, pulled out a ring and asked Johnson if she would marry him while teammates looked on. The Rams made for a Hollywood ending to a blockbuster season, but it wasn't without some major plot twists. Star wide receiver Cooper Kupp delivered — as he has done all year. The Bengals made some aggressive decisions but ultimately succumbed to pressure from the Rams. USA TODAY Sports' Nate Davis takes a look at the key takeaways from Super Bowl 56. After eight seasons in which he terrorized almost every NFL quarterback, Aaron Donald can finally add an honor to his already legendary career: Super Bowl champion. But now that arguably one of the greatest defensemen in league history finally has a Super Bowl ring for his trophy case, will this be the last we see Donald in a Rams uniform? During NBC's pre-Super Bowl game coverage earlier this week, former safety Rodney Harrison Sai Donald hinted to him that he might quit with a Super Bowl 56 win. After the win, Donald deflected a question about retiring from NBC reporter Michelle Tafoya. I'm enjoying it with these guys right now," Donald said as he celebrated with teammates. "We're going to play in the confetti for a minute and live in the moment." Sean McVay joined the ranks as NFL head coach in 2017 at 33, becoming the youngest signing in the league's modern history. The Los Angeles Rams' 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday in Super Bowl 56 at SoFi Stadium makes McVay the youngest coach ever to win a Super Bowl, who is 36 years and 20 days old on Sunday, surpassing Mike Pittsburgh Steelers' Tomlin, who was 36 years, 10 months and 18 days when his team defeated the Arizona Cardinals to cap the 2008 season. McVay defeated former student Zac Taylor, 38, in the youngest coaches' matchup in Super Bowl history. It was a fitting end to a historic season for Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp. He led the NFL in receptions, yards and touchdowns that year. And then in the biggest game of all, Kupp's 1-yard touchdown reception provided the winning goal in his team's comeback win. Not surprisingly, Kupp — who caught eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns and also contributed an important 7-yard streak on 4th-and-1 to keep the Rams' game-winning game alive — was named Super Bowl MVP . After Chidobe Awuzie of the Cincinnati Bengals intercepted Matthew Stafford early in the third quarter of Super Bowl 56, a fan was seen running across the field at SoFi Stadium, beginning at the east end of the field. The fully clothed fan wore a Super Bowl 56 sweatshirt and held a banner. Streaker almost made it the length of the field before being tackled by security near the 10-yard line. On the first play of scrimmage in the second half, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow went for a quick strike. At the other end, wideout tee Higgins fought Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey for the ball and carried it into the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown. While impressive, Higgins Fang did not make it into the top five longest touchdown receptions in Super Bowl history. The longest was an 85-yarder by Jake Delhomme to the Carolina Panthers' Muhsin Muhammad against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 38. The Rams led the Bengals 13-10 at halftime, with quarterback Matthew Stafford leading the stats . Stafford completed 12 of 18 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Odell Beckham Jr. led the Rams with two catches for 52 yards and a TD before leaving with an injury. Cooper Kupp caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. Cam Akers led the Rams with seven carries for 10 yards. For the Bengals, quarterback Joe Burrow passed Stafford's 12-for-18 line for 114 yards. Ja'Marr Chase caught three passes for 62 yards to lead Cinicnnati receivers. Joe Mixon ran 40 yards on seven carries and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass. The Super Bowl is more than just the biggest football game of the year. This year, a lineup of hip-hop heavyweights led by N. It's never a good idea to cost your team yardage by taking to the field in street clothes to celebrate an interception. Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves joined his teammates at "The Griddy" after Cincinnati Bengal's Jessie Bates III secured an interception from Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford late in the first half of Super Bowl 56. NBC's Al Michaels called out Hargreaves for insult -- among the Bengals' inactive players for the game -- adding, "He might be inactive for a while after that scene." For most of the halftime in the Super Bowl, Odell Beckham Jr. seemed to die turn back time. Then came the scream, the flinch, the clutching of his left knee, the dreaded non-contact injury as the pain overwhelmed him too much to secure a narrow catch in second and ninth at 3:54 to close in the second quarter play. The Rams initially said his return was in question, but he was demoted to Out in the second half. Bengals running back Joe Mixon made his best impression of Joe Burrow in the second quarter when he threw the first touchdown pass of his career, a 6-yarder to wide receiver Tee Higgins. Mixon helped get the Bengals into goal position with his legs, but on a second-and-goal play, he took a throw from Burrow and swung far enough to give him a perfect pass for Higgins. The touchdown, at 5:47 before halftime, reduced the Bengals' lead to 13-10. It made Mixon the fifth non-quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl. The last time it happened was the famous "Philly Special," when Trey Burton, tight end of the Philadelphia Eagles, teamed up with quarterback Nick Foles for a win over the New England Patriots four years ago. The Bengals almost answered the Rams' first touchdown with one of their own in the final minute of the first quarter. Despite having to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Evan McPherson, the Bengals' result was set up by a 46-yard pass from quarterback Joe Burrow to rookie wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. Working against veteran Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Chase worked his way down the touchline to pull off a spectacular one-handed catch. There are so many different potential storylines for this year's Super Bowl, from the quarterback fight to the coaching showdown between former teacher and student. Perhaps three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, taking on the Bengals' maligned line, will make the difference in the game. Or could star wideouts Ja'Marr Chase, Cooper Kupp, or Odell Beckham Jr. steal the show? USA TODAY Sports' NFL Editors and Writers share their insight into the pivotal story of Super Bowl 56. Sunday will serve as a showcase for SoFi Stadium, owner Stan Kroenke's $5 billion home for the Los Angeles Rams. But the history and impact of SoFi Stadium is complex, as some heavily criticized tactics paved the way for the Inglewood, California project. Read more from USA TODAY Sports' Josh Peter on how the stadium has caused distress for thousands of residents. But that's the Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium, where the same brand of beer costs $17 for the same size can at Sunday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. Other items at the concession stands on Super Bowl Sunday were associated with a similar sticker shock: SoFi Stadium had the most expensive hot dogs and beer in the NFL in 2021, according to the Team Marketing Report's 2021 NFL Fan Cost Index. As the home team in Super Bowl 56 — despite playing at the Rams' SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles — the Cincinnati Bengals wear their black jersey and white shorts with orange stripes. The black jersey is part of the Bengals' standard uniform when they play at Paul Brown Stadium. The Rams wear their white jerseys with blue numbers. With football's biggest day of the year comes parties, fandom, betting and - of course - Super Bowl squares. LOS ANGELES -- As Odell Beckham Jr. aims for his first championship ring, it's jarring to think he's no better than the third-best wide receiver playing in Super Bowl 56 -- at least based on how the 2021 season has played out. But players like Los Angeles Rams Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp and Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Rookie of the Year Ja'Marr Chase are a long way from converging on the still vibrant legacy that OBJ somehow in just created eight NFL seasons. "Knowing the responsibility I have to set a standard, knowing that some of them look up to me, is why I feel the way I am now rather than the 23-year-old me ' says Beckham. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow looked sharp as he boarded the bus with his team ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl 56 match against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. He wore a grey-and-black suit with tiger stripes and a black hat. NFL Network co-host Rich Eisen compared Burrow's pregame hat to that of Walter White's Breaking Bad alter ego. The Bengals also shared a video of Burrow's locker upon arriving at SoFi Stadium. USA TODAY Sports has been super-charged coverage of the Super Bowl for the past two weeks. Kupp was named Super Bowl MVP after winning TD

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- The latest from the Super Bowl: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp has been named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. Kupp had eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. (Author: Gardener)

Kupp(AP) -- The latest from the Super Bowl: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp has been named the Super Bowl's most valuable player. Kupp had eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 1-yard reception from Matthew Stafford at 1:25 to give the Rams a 23-20 lead that earned them their second Vince Lombardi Trophy. Kupp had four catches for 39 yards on the final drive along with a 7-yard run on the fourth and a 1 to keep the drive alive. Cooper Kupp caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford with 1:25 left and the Rams defeated the Bengals 23-20 to win Sunday night's Super Bowl. Kupp had four receptions for 39 yards on that drive, including the last three. Stafford completed 7 of 11 for 57 yards in the 15-play, 79-yard streak. The Los Angeles Rams offense has been stuck idle since the end of the third quarter. The Rams got 20:16 behind the Cincinnati Bengals on Matt Gay's 41-yard field goal, but went three and out on three straight possessions. It's the second time in the playoffs that the Rams have had three straight 3-and-outs, but last time out they held a 14-0 lead over the Arizona Cardinals in the wild card round. The Cincinnati Bengals are just minutes away from the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. That is, if the Bengals can keep Joe Burrow upright. The Bengals lead the Los Angeles Rams 20-16 through three quarters, although Burrow was sacked five times in the third alone. It was the first time since at least 2000 that a playoff quarterback had been released at least five times in a quarter. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft has been sacked a record 18 times this postseason, and he has been sacked 69 times all season. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has become the sixth player to throw for 6,000 yards in a single season. It took Stafford 209 yards to hit 6,000, and he did that with a 16-yard pass to Brycen Hopkins in the third quarter. Three games later, the Rams attempted their version of the Philly Special, with Cooper Kupp throwing at Stafford. But they missed, and Matt Gay kicked a 41-yard field goal with 6:02 in the third. That drew the Rams within 20-16 of the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati rookie Evan McPherson has tied Adam Vinatieri for most field goals in a single NFL postseason. McPherson made his second Super Bowl with a 38-yarder with 10:15 in the third quarter. That gave the Bengals a 20-13 lead over the Los Angeles Rams as they picked up points from Matthew Stafford's second interception. The rookie, who the Bengals drafted with the fifth pick from Florida, now has 14 field goals this postseason. Super Bowl 56 turned in the Cincinnati Bengals' favor with two big plays in the first 22 seconds of the third quarter. The Bengals scored a touchdown on their first offensive game of the quarter. Joe Burrow moved right and then up before throwing low to Tee Higgins, who caught the ball as Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey fell. Higgins ran into the end zone to end the 75-yard TD for a 17-13 lead. In the Rams' first game to start the next drive, a Matthew Stafford pass intended for Ben Skowronek ricocheted off Bengals cornerback Chidobe Awuzie at the Los Angeles 32. Evan McPherson scored a field goal to give the Bengals a 20-13 lead. That interception gives the Bengals eight spots this postseason, the most since the Green Bay Packers had eight in 2010. Halfway through the Super Bowl there was about as much hip-hop as a stadium can hold, with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Mary J. It was a rare Super Bowl halftime show to be performed in daylight, but on Sunday it still had that nightclub feel at SoFi Stadium, with a set built so that it looked like the houses in nearby Compton and South LA. Rams coach Sean McVay isn't ready to talk about playing the second half of Super Bowl 56 without a wide receiver. Odell Beckham Jr. McVay was asked during his halftime interview if he would like to play without Beckham. The receiver injured his left leg late in the second quarter, the same leg he tore his ACL in during the 2020 season. The Rams coach says they need to make some adjustments and be able to make some games. Los Angeles leads the Bengals 13-10 at halftime. Cincinnati gets the ball first to start the third quarter after winning the coin toss and advancing to the second half. The Los Angeles Rams lead the Cincinnati Bengals 13-10 at halftime in Super Bowl 56. Matthew Stafford has thrown for 165 yards and two touchdowns. He could miss one of his top targets in the second half as it's doubtful Odell Beckham Jr. will return after injuring his left leg at 3:50 in the second quarter. This is the same knee Beckham tore his ACL in during the 2020 season. The wide receiver went into the locker room and has two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Kupp has three catches for 40 yards and the Rams' other TD. Joe Burrow threw 114 yards for Cincinnati. Running back Joe Mixon threw a pass to Tee Higgins for the Bengals' lone TD. Cincinnati safety Jessie Bates netted the first turnover of the game, working his way up in front of Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson in the end zone. Stafford rolled left in third and 14th, throwing deep from midfield. Officials flagged Cincinnati for unsportsmanlike conduct, not for mockery but for a player wearing a hoodie without a uniform and running into the end zone to celebrate. That forced Cincinnati to start on their own 10 with 2 minutes in the half. Stafford had the most interceptions in the regular season with 17. The only quarterback to have the most interceptions in the regular season and win a Super Bowl was Eli Manning in the 2007 season with the Giants. Los Angeles Rams receiver Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a left leg injury in a non-contact play at 3:50 in the second quarter. Beckham ran towards the right side of the field on a cross, but it appeared his foot caught in the turf. He dropped a pass thrown by Matthew Stafford and was clutching his leg as he fell to the turf. Beckham was eyed by coaches on the field before being helped. Beckham, who was signed by the Rams after being released from Cleveland midseason, had two receptions for 52 yards. He scored Los Angeles' first touchdown when he defeated Mike Hilton in the right corner of the end zone for a 17-yard score. The Cincinnati Bengals answered the Los Angeles Rams with their first touchdown to go 13-10 in the second quarter. Running back Joe Mixon got the ball and ran to the right before throwing to a wide-open tee at Higgins in the end zone for a 6-yard TD with 5:47 left. That ended a 75-yard drive by the Bengals with 12 games and 7:04. Mixon joined an exclusive society as only the fifth non-quarterback to throw a TD pass in the Super Bowl. He joins Trey Burton for Philadelphia against the Patriots in 2018, Antwaan Randle El in 2006 for Pittsburgh against Seattle, Lawrence McCutcheon in 1980 for the then St. Louis Rams against the Steelers, and Robert Newhouse of Dallas in 1978 against Denver. Matthew Stafford gets off to a near-perfect start and the Los Angeles Rams lead 13-3 over the Cincinnati Bengals. Stafford capped a 75-yard drive with an 11-yard TD pass for Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp with 12:51 in the second quarter. Neither of the Bengals even touched Kupp when he came off the line as he was wide open for his 21st TD catch this season, including the playoffs. Stafford is 9 on 10 for 127 yards and two TD passes. Stafford is only the second quarterback with a perfect four-drive passer rating in the Super Bowl since 2000. A botched snap by the Rams on the extra point led to an uproar as the Bengals reclaimed the ball. The Los Angeles Rams lead Super Bowl 56 and the Cincinnati Bengals 7-3 after the first quarter. Bengals rookie Evan McPherson kicked in a 29-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining to keep Cincinnati from going scoreless in the first 15 minutes. The field goal was McPherson's 13th field goal scored this postseason, beating the NFL record of 14 set by Adam Vinatieri in 2006 by one by Ja'Marr Chase. The offensive Rookie of the Year chased the ball as he ran into the field from three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and caught Joe Burrow's pass with a right hand for a 46-yard reception. But the Bengals couldn't pick up a yard in three games before sending McPherson on the field goal. This is the third consecutive Super Bowl in which both teams have scored in the opening quarter. That had happened twice in the previous 12 Super Bowls. Playing a Super Bowl anywhere near Hollywood means the stars will come out, and they've certainly been trying to win their first championship in 22 years with their hometown Los Angeles Rams. LeBron James is at SoFi Stadium with the Los Angeles Lakers having a day off along with Lakers legend Kareem-Abdul Jabbar. Pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 2020 World Series, is on hand as he watches his high school friend Matthew Stafford play quarterback for the Rams. The Los Angeles Rams have their first result of Super Bowl 56. Matthew Stafford capped the Rams' second drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Odell Beckham Jr. 6:22 in the first quarter. Beckham caught the ball over Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton, then the wide receiver celebrated his TD with a quick moonwalk. Beckham signed with Los Angeles on November 11 after being cut by the Cleveland Browns. Stafford is 4 of 4 for 47 yards and a 155.2 passer rating to start the game. The Rams had to go just 50 yards over 3 minutes and 35 seconds in six games because the defense forced the Bengals to flip the ball on downs to end Cincinnati's opening possession. Make it nine straight Super Bowls where neither team has scored on their opening run. The Los Angeles Rams started on offense and finished with 1 yards thanks to a sack by Pro Bowl defensive end Trey Hendrickson from Matthew Stafford. Cincinnati prevailed fourth and 1 in midfield, and linebacker Ernest Jones interrupted Joe Burrow's pass to flip the Bengals on downs. The Bengals are looking to score their first touchdown in the first half of a Super Bowl after being shut out in the franchise's two previous Super Bowls. Cincinnati scored just 17 points in the opening game all season, which ranked second-lowest in the NFL. The Cincinnati Bengals won the coin toss and put off putting the Los Angeles Rams on offense to start Super Bowl 56. The last seven winners of the coin toss lost the Super Bowl. The last team to win the coin toss and the Super Bowl? Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford technically named Tails the visiting team with Los Angeles. King was present at the coin toss when the NFL recognized the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which was enacted in 1972 as part of the educational amendments providing for the first time equal funding for men and women in high schools, colleges and universities that receive federal funding . She was joined by team captains from the California School for the Deaf Riverside Cubs, members of the high school girls' Flag League of Champions, and girls youth tackle footballers from the Inglewood Chargers and Watts Rams. Quickie Mickey slowed it down for the Super Bowl. Mickey Guyton, who told The Associated Press this week that she earned the nickname for singing "The Star Spangled Banner" at just under 1:30, sang it at around 1:50 Sunday before the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals won the field. "I don't want to ruin anyone's sports betting, but let's just say it's the Super Bowl so it most likely won't be any time soon," the Grammy-nominated country music singer told the AP. She was still faster than the Super Bowl average of around two minutes. It's hot at SoFi Stadium for Super Bowl 56. The temperature is 82 before kickoff between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals after cooling down from 85 a few hours before kickoff. That's less than the record of 84 set on January 14, 1973 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Getting into this Super Bowl at the last minute is going to be a big hit in the wallet. Super Bowl 56 kicks off less than an hour away and both teams are warming up on the field at SoFi Stadium. Joe Burrow leads the Cincinnati Bengals with Matthew Stafford, all in the Rams' modern white throwback jerseys. This is the first Super Bowl spot for both of them. Burrow is the fastest going up from #1 overall standings to start this game. Stafford had never won a playoff game after the Rams traded for him prior to this postseason. Stafford comes in with 49,995 passing yards and 323 TD passes. That's the highest for a quarterback making his first Super Bowl appearance. Stafford needs just 209 passing yards to become the sixth player to hit 6,000 in a single season. The "Who Dey!" Fans make themselves felt in the SoFi Stadium. The halls are packed with people wearing Bengals shirts, and they outnumber the Rams shirts by almost a 4-to-1 ratio. Super Bowl 56 could make history at kickoff before either the Los Angeles Rams or the Cincinnati Bengals begin their opening drives. The temperature two hours before kick-off was 85 degrees with a chance that the gauge will go even higher if the ball is shot. That would make this the hottest Super Bowl ever, beating the record of 84 set on January 14, 1973 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. California is dealing with a heatwave, with eight locations in the region reporting record temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s earlier this week.
