AfghanGAYAN, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Afghan authorities on Thursday struggled to reach a remote area hit by an earthquake that killed 1,000 people, but poor communications and a lack of proper roads hampered their efforts, they said Officer. The 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck early Wednesday about 160 km (100 miles) southeast of Kabul in arid mountains with small settlements near the border with Pakistan. "We can't reach the area, the networks are too weak, we're trying to get updates," Mohammad Ismail Muawiyah, a spokesman for the Taliban's top military commander in the hardest-hit Paktika province, told Reuters, referring to phone networks. The earthquake killed around 1,000 people and injured 1,500, he said. Around 600 people were rescued from various affected areas on Wednesday night, he said. The town of Gayan, near the epicenter, suffered significant damage, with most of its mud-walled buildings damaged or completely collapsed, a Reuters team said. The city was packed with Taliban soldiers and ambulances when a helicopter carrying supplies landed nearby, kicking up huge swirls of dust. About 300 people sat on the ground waiting for supplies. The bailout will be a major test for the tough Islamist Taliban authorities that took over the country last August after two decades of war and cut off from much international aid by sanctions. The Taliban-led Ministry of Defense is leading the rescue effort. Afghan media in the hours after the earthquake https://tmsnrt.rs/3xH5Dcp published images of houses reduced to rubble and bodies wrapped in blankets on the ground. In 2015, an earthquake struck remote northeastern Afghanistan, killing several hundred people in Afghanistan and nearby northern Pakistan.

AfghanistanAfghanistan is rocked by a deadly earthquake as the troubled country struggles for help Desperate search and rescue operations were underway in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday after an earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people, a major blow to a country which is already facing a severe economic and humanitarian crisis. At least 1,500 people were reported injured - but officials warn the death toll is likely to rise as many families were sleeping in flimsy apartment buildings when the quake hit. Children near their destroyed home in Spera district in Afghanistan's Khost province on June 22. Many houses in the area are made of mud, wood and other materials susceptible to weather damage - and the quake coincided with heavy monsoon rains, increasing the risk of collapse. Some people spent the night in makeshift shelters outdoors while rescuers searched for survivors with flashlights.Afghan villagers sit outside a tent after their house was damaged in an earthquake in Spera, Khost province, on June 22.Medics and rescue workers from the All over the world country are converging on the site with the support of some international organizations like the World Health Organization. Aid may be limited, however, as many organizations withdrew from the aid-dependent country after the Taliban seized power last August. The Taliban government has deployed emergency resources, including several helicopters and dozens of ambulances, and has offered compensation to victims' families. It has also appealed for foreign aid, asking for "the generous support of all countries, international organizations, individuals and foundations" on Wednesday. The quake has compounded the problems already plaguing Afghanistan. Though the economic crisis has loomed for years as a result of conflict and drought, it plunged to new depths after the Taliban takeover, which prompted the United States and its allies to freeze about $7 billion of the country's foreign exchange reserves and halt international funding. The move has paralyzed the Afghan economy and plunged many of the 20 million population into a severe hunger crisis. Millions of Afghans are unemployed, government employees have not been paid and food prices have skyrocketed. Some families have reportedly been so desperate for food that they have sold their children. Aid organizations are few and far between, and those that do are stretched thin. On Wednesday, the WHO said it had mobilized "all resources" from across the country, with teams on the ground providing medicines and emergency support. But as one WHO official put it, "Resources are stretched here, not just for this region." Experts and officials say the most pressing immediate needs are medical care and transportation for the injured, shelter and supplies for the displaced, food and water and clothes. The UN has been distributing medical supplies and deploying mobile health teams to Afghanistan - but warned it has no search and rescue capabilities and that regional neighbors have little capacity to intervene. The US is no longer present in Afghanistan following the complete withdrawal of its troops and the collapse of the previous US-backed Afghan government. Like almost all other nations, it has no official relations with the Taliban government. Turkey is the country best placed to provide assistance, said Ramiz Alakbarov, deputy UN special envoy for Afghanistan. He said the Turkish embassy in Afghanistan is "awaiting the formal request". Turkey's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the Turkish Red Crescent, which operates in Afghanistan, has sent humanitarian aid to the victims. On Thursday, a Taliban spokesman said humanitarian aid had also arrived from Qatar, Iran and Pakistan, with flights and trucks carrying items including medicines, tents and tarpaulins. More than 1,000 people killed after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. An estimated $15 million in aid is needed to respond to the disaster, Alakbarov said — a number likely to rise further as information arrives about the situation on the ground. ," Alakbarov said. I have no detailed reports on how well positioned to operate and deploy such machines in these mountainous areas from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). "The country is suffering the effects of decades of conflict, ongoing severe drought, the impact of other intense climate-related disasters, extreme economic hardship, a failing health system, and system-wide gaps," the IFRC said on Wednesday, calling for more global support.

Taliban call for more aid as death toll rises

The Hardline Islamist leadership says aid must be "expanded" after the quake devastated towns and villages in the country's mountainous east (Author: Gardener)

TalibanThe Taliban-led Afghan government has appealed for more international aid as it grapples with the devastating earthquake in a mountainous region in the east that has killed more than 1,000 people and injured many more. With the war-ravaged nation already plagued by an economic crisis, the hard-line Islamist leadership said sanctions imposed by Western countries after US-led coalition forces withdrew last year meant they were hampered in their ability to cope with the disaster Khost and Paktika to finish Wednesday were hampered provinces. The earthquake struck areas already suffering the effects of heavy rains, causing rockfalls and mudslides that hampered rescue efforts. As rescue teams and locals dug their hands through rubble again on Thursday to look for survivors, Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, the head of the information and culture department in Paktika, said, "People are digging grave after grave." Huzaifa said more than 1,500 People were injured, many seriously. The disaster comes as Afghanistan grapples with a severe economic crisis that has gripped it since the Taliban took over last year, and amid rapidly growing concerns about the Taliban's and international organizations' ability to respond quickly. While major international organizations still operate in Afghanistan, the Taliban takeover caused other organizations and governments to scale back their aid programs in a country where about 80% of the budget came from foreign aid. Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a senior Taliban official, said the government "appreciates and welcomes" the help pledged by some other governments and aid organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières and the Red Cross. But the 5.9-magnitude quake — originally reported at 6.1 and the country's deadliest in more than 20 years — had caused widespread damage and suffering that more help was needed. "Unfortunately, the government is under sanctions and therefore financially unable to help people to the extent required," he said. "Aid needs to be scaled up very much because this is a devastating earthquake that hasn't been seen in decades." United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said the global body was "fully mobilized" to help with what UN officials confirmed the dispatch of health teams and shipments of medicines, food, trauma kits and emergency shelters to the earthquake zone. Tomas Niklasson, the European Union's special envoy for Afghanistan, tweeted: "The EU is monitoring the situation and stands ready to coordinate the EU and provide emergency assistance to the people and communities affected." Pakistan, where officials said one person was with the quake killed said it would send emergency aid - including tents - across the border. Médecins Sans Frontières said its teams in Khost and the Afghan capital Kabul are in touch with the Taliban government and other organizations to provide assistance. "We know that many of the health facilities are underserved and a natural disaster like this will stretch the facilities in the affected areas to the limit," MSF Afghanistan said in a tweet. The British Red Cross said its teams were arranging for food, medicine, shelter, water and temporary shelter to be shipped to the region near the Pakistan border. Intersos, a non-profit humanitarian aid organization working in Afghanistan, said the disaster could not have come at a worse time for Afghans and that "the organization's doctors and nurses will soon be on their way to assist those in urgent need of medical care." Emergency supplies need treatment". The disaster poses major challenges for the Taliban, who have largely isolated the country through their hard-line Islamist policies - particularly the subjugation of women and girls. Even before the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan's emergency response teams were overwhelmed, to deal with the natural disasters that frequently plague the country. But with only a handful of airworthy planes and helicopters left since the Taliban returned to power, any immediate response to the recent disaster is further limited. Karim Nyazai was in the provincial capital and returned sofo rt returns to find his village devastated and 22 members of his extended family dead. “I was separated from my family who lives in a remote village in Gyan District. "The whole village is buried. Those who managed to get out before everything collapsed managed to recover the bodies of their loved ones from the rubble. “I lost 22 members of my [extended family], including my sister and three of my brothers. More than 70 people in the village died.” The United States, whose troops helped overthrow the original Taliban regime and remained in Afghanistan for two decades until Washington pulled them out last year, is “deeply saddened” by the earthquake, the White House said . "President Biden is monitoring developments and has directed USAID (US Agency for International Development) and other federal government partners to review U.S. response options to assist those most affected," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement. Wednesday's quake struck around 1:30 a.m. at a depth of 10 km (six miles), about 47 km southwest of Khost, according to the United States Geological Survey.

After the Taliban seized power in August 2021, the United States and its allies froze about $7 billion of the country's foreign exchange reserves and cut off international funding. Afghanistan's deadliest earthquake in decades comes amid crippling hunger and economic crises. The humanitarian catastrophe caused by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan - the country's deadliest earthquake in decades - came at a challenging time for the Taliban-ruled country, which is currently reeling from hunger and economic crises. Almost half the population -- 20 million people -- are suffering from the quake of acute hunger, according to a May report backed by the United Nations. It's a situation made worse by the Taliban seizure of power in August 2021, which led to the United States and its allies freezing about $7 billion of the country's foreign exchange reserves and cutting off international funding. The situation has crippled an economy already heavily dependent on aid. Following last year's chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, the country's economy went into freefall when the World Bank forecast in April that a "combination of falling incomes and rising prices has led to a serious deterioration in household living standards." . The Taliban held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to organize transportation of the injured and material assistance to the victims and their families, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a tweet. "Measures have also been taken to provide cash assistance and treatment," Mujahid said, adding that authorities "have been instructed to use air and land transportation for the delivery of food, clothing, medicines and other necessities and for the transportation of the wounded.” Najibullah Sadid, an Afghan water resources management expert, also said the earthquake coincided with heavy monsoon rains in the region — leaving traditional houses, many made of mud and other natural materials, particularly vulnerable to damage. Hozaifa added that the death toll is likely to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. In neighboring Khost province, 25 people were killed and several others injured, and five people were killed in Nangarhar province, the civil protection agency said. AEW Dynamite Ratings Bomb bad for building toward Forbidden Door

AEW Dynamite posted its worst rating in over a year with a lazy 761,000 viewers for last night's episode of "Road Rager." (Author: Gardener)

AEW Dynamite Ratings BombAEW Dynamite posted its worst rating in its normal time slot in more than a year with a lazy 761,000 viewers for last night's episode of "Road Rager," down 19% from last week. This was AEW's worst performance in its normal timeslot since it aired on April 7, 2022, which drew a total of 688,000 viewers. As AEW continues its build-up toward the niche pay-per-view AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door - one that caters to a predominantly male hardcore wrestling audience - AEW attracted male hardcore wrestling numbers. Last night's convoluted Dynamite show featured Jay White, Desperado and Will Ospreay in what AEW called a "dream match" against Dax Harwood. With AEW promoting a show full of wrestlers that much of its television audience is unfamiliar with, Dynamite's viewership suffered. AEW Dynamite faced stiff competition against the Stanley Cup Playoffs, however, the Stanley Cup attracted 4.33 million viewers. Last week's AEW Dynamite broadcast drew 939,000 viewers versus the far more popular NBA Finals, which drew over 11 million viewers, more than double the Stanley Cup Finals viewership. It seems like the closer AEW gets to Forbidden Door and the more new faces from NJPW it forces onto its TV, the lower the numbers. Forbidden Door advance tickets sold out instantly at Chicago's United Center among AEW's extremely loyal audience. But TV numbers suggest there's clearly an upper limit to the number of fans willing to invest in a crossover show designed for a niche audience, even among AEW's own fanbase gravitating towards a hardcore male following tends. Forbidden Door will also be an interesting test of AEW's ability to pull a strong pay-per-view purchase rate two straight months after AEW Double or Nothing generated an estimated 150,000 to 155,000 purchases. AEW normally airs pay-per-views on a quarterly basis, but Forbidden Door - AEW's hardcore male wrestling extravaganza on June 26 - represents an unprecedented two pay-per-views in consecutive months. Wednesday's low number for a show solely focused on promoting Forbidden Door is an ominous sign. With the Forbidden Door beginning to fall off its hinges, AEW still has a week to pitch its niche pay-per-view to a TV audience that seems largely uninterested.

Will Ospreay and the Aussie Open of United Empire meet Orange Cassidy and Roppongi Vice in a trio match. This was a really strong promo overall, but I would have preferred if they dropped the heel stuff at the end (Sabre is already a heel) and just hyped the show up with an announcement. Schiavone greeted Danielson in the ring and Danielson said he would take the mic and not give it back. Danielson said this week was a great week to be an AEW fan and therefore a professional wrestling fan. He promised we would see excellent professional wrestling on Sunday and a bloody spectacle a week from now. Chris Jericho even paid for Zack Saber Jr. to challenge him, and Danielson wanted to prove he was the best technical wrestler alive. The bad news is that due to Jericho and the crew's attack on Anarchy in the Arena, Danielson is not cleared to compete in Forbidden Door or Blood & Guts. However, Danielson can't wait to get back because there's nobody in this ring who can wrestle like he does. The good news is that Danielson has found the person he trusts to take his place on Forbidden Door and Blood & Guts, but he won't tell us, and he won't tell Zack Saber Jr. either. Sabers music played and he appeared on the ramp before chatting with Danielson. Jon Moxley was backstage. He said the Jericho Appreciation Society would be locked up at Blood & Guts with dogs next week. In the meantime, he must take on (and work with) Hiroshi Tanahashi, the greatest wrestler who ever lived. Tonight it's just business, but Sunday it's personal because when that bell rings, Moxley has no respect for anyone. Fletcher and Rocky began, then Davis and Trent walked in. Orange came into the match and made his hands-in-pockets schtick. His team dispatched the United Empire and went on dives, but the Empire rallied to take outside control with simultaneous ramp attacks. After a commercial, Trent fought both Aussie Opens to reach Orange for a day. Orange "landed" his weak kicks, then hit a double hurricanrana before closing out the Aussie Open with an Escalera and a Tornado DDT. Orange and Roppongi Vice have all done the United Empire with dives. A lazy elbow drop from Orange gave Ospreay a two. Ospreay avoided the orange punch and turned a DDT into his backflip enziguiri. Davis and Rocky tag in and the big man knocks Rocky out with a big punch. Aussie Open hit a combined spinebuster for two. We have a parade of big moves completed with the Roppongi Vice Double Knees. Trent went for strong zero but Ospreay cut him off and Davis hit the lifting piledriver for a good near fall before Orange broke the pin. Orange avoided Ospreay's Sasuke special and Ospreay dived off Rocky. Trent fought back both Aussie Opens again and reached orange for the day. - Coming out after the match was IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan. United Empire outnumbered Orange's team but then FTR came out to level the chances without a brawl. Dutt was very excited and said it was time to celebrate. Lethal was looking forward to being ROH TV Champion, but Samoa Joe won't be returning to work. This was one of the best AEW promos of the whole year and quite possibly the defining Christian moment since he joined the company - and that includes his main pay-per-view event. Schiavone asked Christian to explain himself after attacking Jungle Boy last week. Christian mentioned that Jungle Boy eliminated him from the Casino Battle Royale last year and that the crowd cheered when it happened. He thinks he deserves better - not to mention that Jungle Boy cost him a bonus and a shot at the world title. Christian said he saw potential in Jungle Boy and decided he would pull his car in front of him just to cash a check. Christian isn't here to nurture young talent, and he has some advice for such people: "Have a match that people will really remember." Christian turned to Jungle Boy and said when he once gave him no advice before the game, he lost the tag titles. Schiavone played footage of what Christian said to Jungle Boy's family, "You raised a piece of shit." Christian explained that he was giving Jungle Boy's mother the opportunity to apologize for giving birth to Jungle Boy. He thinks she was a little sweet to Christian. "Tarzan Boy" interrupted and Luchasaurus came out alone. You are like a son to me.” Luchasaurus gave in and Christian hugged him. The Young Bucks and Kyle O'Reilly were backstage. The Bucks said things are right in the world now that they are champions again. Matt Hikuleo and El Phantasmo will join the Bucks against Sting and his cronies at Forbidden Door. They went head-to-head with Penta landing a thrust kick. He countered a black dive and rose over the top with a tope con giro. Back inside, Penta hit a backstabber for two, but he appeared to hurt his back in the fall. Black baited Penta to the ground and tripped him on the apron allowing him to take control. Penta wanted the Penta Driver, but Black fought back. Avoiding a heel kick, Penta hit an enzuguiri followed by a rolling cutter for two. Another quick exchange of fire ended in Black's Orihara moonsault, followed by a top-rope double stomp for two. Black climbed the ropes, but Penta interrupted him with a kick, hitting an Avalanche Fear Factor. However, it took him a long time to make the cover, which allowed Black to get his foot on the ropes. Penta tried to follow up, but his back gave out, allowing Black to hit the heel kick for the win. – After the match, PAC faced off against Black. A video promo of Miro was interrupted saying he would send everyone to their creator. The match will be PAC vs. Malakai Black vs. He wants the TNT Championship and said that when Scorpio Sky was healed and ready, he would welcome him to Wardlow's world. Page hit the first blow with a couple of hard smacks, then Young returned fire. Page grounded Young and landed an Orihara moonsault before the break. During the commercial, Young briefly took control, but once he was back, Page launched a comeback by hitting a superplex. Page hit the fallaway slam and pitched up. A lasso sent Young to the ground, where Page landed a plancha. Back inside, Page hit a diving clothesline for two. He followed with his corner moonsault, but Page dodged it and hit a German before nailing the buckshot lariat to victory. - Cole interrupted Page's music right after the match, demanding "Story Hour with Adam Cole," but IWGP World Heavyweight Champion "Switchblade" Jay White's music was interrupted. Switchblade said he put a lot of thought into Forbidden Door. He said Cole couldn't be the challenger at Forbidden Door because he lost to Page twice. Switchblade confronted Page in the ring and said it wouldn't be him either. They fought and Cole got involved. Page got in position for the buckshot, but Cole blew it down and the two Bullet Club members knocked Page out. Cole snatched the title and teased Switchblade about it, but set Page to it instead. Okada fended off Switchblade and Cole, allowing him and Page to stand upright. He wanted to hit the Rainmaker on Switchblade, but the champion avoided it. Okada's music was played to end the segment. Hogan said Red Velvet was out of action. They then said no one could stand in their way. This match was awful and made Storm look like a weak challenger who narrowly made it past Shafir and was knocked down in the post match. Not much happened until Shafir sent Storm to the ground where Rose smashed her with a running senton. After the break, Storm hit her signature headbutt, but Shafir amazingly blocked it and continued the beatdown on the floor, where Storm fired back with a Tornado DDT. Back inside, Storm hit a German followed by the hip attack. She then simply rolled Shafir for the win. - After the match, Shafir and Rose knocked Storm down, and then Thunder Rosa ran out to make the save. Storm used the belt to finish off Rose, and she and Rosa faced off to end the segment. Darby said he doesn't think Kyle O'Reilly is unmedically cleared, he thinks he's just scared. They brought some weirdos for the eight-man day at Forbidden Door: Shingo Takagi and Hiromu Takahashi. Sting said it was showtime at the Forbidden Door. * IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Jay White (c) vs. * AEW All-Atlantic Championship: Malakai Black vs. * IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships / ROH Tag Team Championships: United Empire (Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan) (c ) vs. * IWGP US Championship: Will Ospreay (c) vs. Orange Cassidy Tanahashi and Moxley attacked before the bell. Moxley and Jericho brawled on the floor while Tanahashi and Archer faced off in the ring. Archer hit a full Nelson bomb and tagged Jericho. Tanahashi regained control and tagged in Moxley, who bit his elbows into Jericho's face. They brawled outside, but upon re-entry, Guevara tripped Moxley, allowing Jericho and Archer to take him out. Jericho sent Moxley airborne with a leap as they beat him through a commercial break. Back again, Moxley raised his knees on a lionsault attempt by Jericho and reached Tanahashi for the hot tag. Tanahashi tripped both opponents with running elbows, then the springy crossbody allowed for some air guitar. Tanahashi continued the attack with a flipping senton for two. Jericho briefly gained the upper hand and advanced toward the walls, but Tanahashi fought. Jericho was able to hit a codebreaker, but Moxley released the pin and took out Archer with a tope suicida. Avoiding the Judas effect, Tanahashi hit a codebreaker himself before hitting a standing high fly flow. Jericho rolled through the walls and barred them, forcing Tanahashi to flee. A parade of large moves was completed with a slingshot blade from Tanahashi. Moxley and Archer tagged in. They traded great strikes until Moxley fought his way out of a blackout attempt and accomplished a quick paradigm shift. Tanahashi tagged in and hit the high fly flow for the win. - After the match, Eddie Kingston and Wheeler YUTA ran out and got into a fight with Jericho and Guevara. Officials ran to get some order while the rest of the Jericho Appreciation Society joined the fray. Moxley and Tanahashi stared at each other the entire ring, focused and ignoring the brawl.

He introduces Christian Cage and comes to the ring. Schiavone asks him why he turned on Jurassic Express last week with the chair shot to Jungle Boy. Cage receives loud boos from the audience and he says that Jungle Boy couldn't get away with being eliminated from the Casino Battle Royal last year. He says he had to find out more about Jungle Boy on social media and doesn't care what fans think. Cage says he saw how talented Jungle Boy was and he would hitch a ride for a huge paycheck. He gives wrestlers free advice and says that to make a big paycheck you need to have a match that people will remember and watch for years. Cage says Jungle Boy doesn't have the killer instinct and the one time he doesn't take him out they lose the AEW Tag Team Titles. Schiavone rolls out footage of Cage talking to Jungle Boy's mother and sister. He asks him why he would say that and he replies by saying that she wanted him to be his father. Cage says he never wanted to be his father and the father he had is dead. Cage says Jungle Boy refuses to fight back and he should enjoy an early retirement. The Jurassic Express music hits and Luchasaurus comes to the ring. He starts choking Cage in the corner and says the two need to talk alone. Cage hugs him and the two exit the ring together. At least 1,000 dead, 1,500 injured in earthquakes in Afghanistan

An earthquake in Afghanistan has killed at least 1,000 people and injured more than 1,500. (Author: Gardener)

AfghanistanLONDON -- At least 1,000 people have been killed and more than 1,500 others injured in a powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, according to the country's state media. "We are deeply saddened by reports of an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan," the U said. The death toll continued to rise throughout the day as rescue teams arrive in the mountainous region around the quake's epicenter. People are still being pulled out of the rubble, and wind, rain and even snowfall are hampering efforts, said Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, the United Nations Deputy Special Envoy and Humanitarian Coordinator for the country, told ABC News. Mawlawi Sharafudin Muslim, Deputy Minister for Disaster Management, told reporters earlier Wednesday that at least 920 people had been killed and at least 600 others injured. A local journalist told ABC News that many of the victims died in their homes when the quake struck in the middle of the night while many were sleeping. The quake destroyed homes and disrupted communications, causing a near-total blackout. "People were shocked by the hit and many died right in their homes," the journalist said. The few pictures that have been released since the earthquake showed helicopters evacuating injured people from the area. The Afghan Defense Ministry said in a press release that the ministry had dispatched seven first aid helicopters to transport the wounded to military and civilian hospitals and treat the victims. Teams from the field and central units had arrived at the scene to help transport the injured to health centers. Mohammad Hasan Akhund, acting prime minister of the Taliban, announced that the country will allocate more than $11 million to "urgently address the situation of families of earthquake victims and victims in Paktika and Khost provinces," Bakhtar news agency reported. The quake's epicenter was in Paktika province, about 27 miles southwest of Khost, Pakistan's Meteorological Department said. "I am saddened by the loss of precious lives caused by the earthquake in Afghanistan and offer my condolences to those affected," Pakistan's President Arif Alvi said on Twitter. "I pray for the dead, the injured and offer my condolences to the bereaved. Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan at this hour of need.” Pope Francis offered his condolences to those affected by the quake. "In the past few hours, an earthquake in Afghanistan has caused casualties and great damage," he said during his weekly audience at the Vatican. “I express my closeness to those injured and affected by the earthquake and pray especially for those who have lost their lives and their families. China said it would provide emergency aid to Afghanistan, the country's ambassador to Kabul said. "We stand ready to provide emergency assistance according to the needs of the Afghan people," the ambassador said in a tweet, adding that China is in "close contact" with relevant parties.

Thousands of people are desperate for food, medicine and shelter after the earthquake in Afghanistan killed at least 1,000 people

Dadmir Khan lost his three daughters, son and mother in one of the deadliest earthquakes in Afghanistan in decades on Wednesday. (Author: Gardener)

AfghanistanKABUL, Afghanistan -- Dadmir Khan lost his three daughters, son and mother on Wednesday in one of the deadliest earthquakes in Afghanistan in decades. Now he worries about who in his family will not survive the aftermath of the quake, as medicines for injured people have become scarce. The farmer from the remote, mountainous Paktika province near the Pakistan border added that he was knocked to the ground several times by the quake, which measured 5.9 magnitude according to the United States Geological Survey. He said his son Nabiullah, 7, and his three daughters - Lila, 4; Amina, 3; and Nazia, 2 - and mother, Guljama, 65, were killed. Other members of his family are being treated in the hospital, "but they are not in good condition because there is not enough medicine at the facility," he said. "We're trying to take them somewhere else," he added. Afghan Taliban rulers officials said at least 1,000 people died and 1,500 were injured in the quake, which had its epicenter in Paktika province, although they warned the death toll could rise. Zarinullah Shah said a large percentage of his community in Barmal district of Paktika province lost family members. "In our area, most of the houses were built of mud," Shah, 47, said, adding that most of the buildings he lived in were damaged or destroyed and around 300 families lost their homes. Thousands are in dire need of tents, blankets, food and medicine, he said, adding: "The Afghan government has tried to help the injured, but it does not have enough resources, especially helicopters and doctors, to meet the needs of the affected people." "The situation is very bad," said Dr. Mohammad Anwar Haneef, senior program coordinator for Care International in Afghanistan, one of the few international aid organizations to remain in the country after the Taliban took power in August as U. Haneef Relief efforts coordinated from the capital Kabul, adding that ambulances could not easily get to the affected areas. In a rare move, the reclusive Taliban Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, who rarely appears in public, called for "the international Community and all humanitarian organizations to be supported by this great n Afghan people affected by the tragedy and to spare no effort to help those affected." "We ask God to protect our poor people from trials and harm," he said in a statement from the Taliban spokesman. But the response is likely to be complicated, as many governments are wary of dealing directly with the militant group that has issued a spate of repressive enactments curtailing the rights of women and girls, and the press reminiscent of their late days reminded of power , before the U. The reticence of the international community could slow the deployment of emergency relief and teams that are normally dispatched after such natural disasters. The earthquake also came at a time when Afghanistan is already deep in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, and millions are facing increasing hunger and poverty after international funding for the Taliban was halted. "People are unemployed," Haneef said. He added that leaving the country to buy medical supplies is difficult and that this is made worse by the fact that the country "suffers from low revenues on the one hand and high costs on the other". With huge swathes of the country devastated, he said his country needed "a short-term plan to provide food, shelter, medicine and medical support." "Unfortunately, this will have long-term consequences for people," he added.
